Cuddling strangers latest craze for New York singles

By Herbert Lash, Reuters | August 9, 2004

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It's not about sex and all about the touchy-feely experience of snuggling up to perfect strangers wearing pajamas.

The grab fests are called cuddle parties, and since they started in New York in February, hundreds of people have paid $30 each to touch and embrace others in intimate gatherings.

Everyone needs to be cuddled, especially in lonely New York, say creators Reid Mihalko and Marcia Baczynski who say it's a good way to meet new and interesting people.

But the rules are clear. The PJs stay on the whole time and participants are reminded of Rule No. 7: "No dry humping!"

In case things get too steamy, a small chime is kept on hand. Before the cuddling begins, the chime is struck several times so everyone gets the message.

"We've never used it," said Mihalko, who said sexual arousal does occur, and that participants shouldn't be turned off or scared by erections. "They happen."

The idea for cuddle parties loosely came about after Mihalko, a 14-year masseur, began giving massages to other masseurs who never got the chance to receive them.

Signs that people need to be touched were brought home one day when Mihalko said he noticed a woman bawling from the emotional release that a massage provided her at an outdoor stand in midtown Manhattan.

"It started out as a joke," said Baczynski. "Now we talk about cuddling all the time. It's just been amazing."

MOOOOO!

Curiosity is a big driver for people who attend cuddle parties, and it is a better way to meet people than going to a bar, getting drunk and spending the night with someone just because of the need for some affection, she said.

A cuddle party is really about communication and not therapy, say the organizers.

Before any touching begins, participants gather in a circle to hear the rules and voice any questions or concerns. The first rule is that the event is not clothing optional, pajamas must stay on and sex is not permitted.

Participants team up into pairs and to ensure the boundaries of what is permissible are clear, they practice saying "no" to the question, "May I kiss you?"

An introduction to cuddling ensues, first by hugging three people. People then get in a circle on their hands and knees, rub shoulders and moo like cows. After a bit of swaying, everyone falls to their side, which puts them into an easy cuddling position.

Cuddle parties are intended for people who are emotionally sound. People in therapy or who are seeing a mental health professional are asked to consult their doctor before signing up for a party and to tell organizers of their situation.

'PLAYING THE DOZENS'

One group on an overcast Sunday drew a mix of mostly single people in their 30s and a smattering of older people.

A repeat customer who called herself a born-again Christian said it was good to cuddle up to another person, albeit a perfect stranger, after a hectic week.

"I felt good. I had a particularly stressful week," said the woman, who did not wish to be named.

Friends had warned her that the parties would be nothing more than thinly disguised preludes to sex, but she dismissed those worries as alarmist and unfounded, saying, "It's not about sex."

Like others, the chance to meet someone was a consideration in attending a cuddle party.

"People in a way are looking for a connection," said Fernando. "It's weird, but not unusual."

A man named Dwayne H., who described himself as introverted, said he thought the parties would help him relax before strangers and help him express his feelings.

"I have a problem showing emotion," he said. REUTERS

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Adolph Coors Co. and Canada's Molson Inc. on Thursday agreed to merge in a deal that would create the world's fifth-largest brewer by volume.

The deal's fate remained unclear, however, after a last-minute takeover offer Wednesday for Molson from Ian Molson, a one-time company deputy chairman who resigned in June after a falling out with Chairman Eric Molson, his cousin.

Under the Coors-Molson agreement, Molson shareholders would control about 55 percent of the combined company, which would remain largely in the hands of the Molson and Coors families.

The deal would help the companies compete against larger rivals, including Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. and SABMiller Plc, that have snatched up competitors around the globe over the past few years.

"The beer world is in a major consolidating phase," Coors Chief Executive Leo Kiely said an interview. "This allows the new company to be at the table with things that neither (Molson Chief Executive) Dan (O'Neill) nor I could be at the table with our independent companies. There's quite a bit of purchasing power here."

Coors and Molson, Canada's oldest brewer, said they had agreed not to solicit other offers and expected their deal to close this fall.

Molson shares rose C$1.00 to close at C$35.70 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, while Coors shares fell $2.33 to $72.40 on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites).

Ian Molson sent a letter Wednesday offering to acquire the 218-year-old Canadian beermaker for about $4 billion but provided no financing details, a source close to the situation said. That would values each Molson share at roughly C$40.81.

Molson Chief Executive Dan O'Neill said the company never received a firm bid from Ian Molson. He said the board received a letter requesting a meeting to discuss a possible offer, but the board unanimously decided to support the Coors deal.

The Ian Molson deal would be difficult to close since 67 percent of Molson's shareholders would have to sign off on it, and Eric Molson controls 55 percent of the company's stock.

Coors could also make a rival transaction difficult by pulling out of its existing joint venture with Molson, under which the companies sell each other's products in their home countries. The venture accounts for about 25 percent of Molson's profits.

Still, some industry bankers said Ian Molson, who did not return calls seeking comment, could gain support from enough outside Molson shareholders to prevent the Coors deal from achieving the 67 percent approval threshold.

His cause could be helped by the fact that his deal would offer a premium to Molson shareholders, as opposed to no premium in the Coors-Molson deal.

Under the Coors-Molson deal, the shares of both companies would be exchanged for shares in a new, combined company.

The merger is expected to produce $175 million in annual savings by 2007 and would boost earnings in the first year after closing, the companies said.

Both Coors and Molson reported disappointing earnings on Thursday and are struggling to gain share in an increasingly competitive global market. The combined company would hold a 43 percent share of the Canadian beer market and 11 percent of the U.S. market. It would be the world's No. 5 brewer by volume, behind industry leader Anheuser-Busch and SABMiller, Heineken and Interbrew.

Eric Molson would be chairman of the combined company, to be called Molson Coors Brewing Co. Kiely would be CEO.

Wall Street analysts have been skeptical about how a merger would benefit the companies.

"Given that Coors and Molson are already a combined entity since they operate two joint ventures, one in Canada and one in the United States, we question where is the value and/or cost savings/synergies," Smith Barney analyst Bonnie Herzog said in a research note.

Deutsche Bank advised Coors during the merger talks. Citigroup and BMO Nesbitt burns advised Molson, while Merrill Lynch advised the special committee of Molson board members.

-----------------

You used to be HunkaBunka
Heard so much but I've never been
Then I hear you had a sex change
Now its a place where I'd commit sins.

You have a huge bar in the back
You have a bar on either side of the stage
Everytime I go to you to peep a fav band
I walk away thinking it was all the rage

The view you provide
totally makes me cream in my jeans
But I don't.

I'm in a public place, whatsahmattahwitchoo?

Bottom line, Starland Ballroom - I fuckin' love you.

-------------------

See you in two nights my dear, as I plan on attending the 40 Below Summer show.

*smooch*

Point of this thread being that I think the Ballroom is one of the best if not the best rock club/venue in Jersey today. No doubt. Catch your favorite rock/metal band there. You'll be glad that you did.

I've spoken to Alkey and we've planned a get together for Tuesday April 27th at around 9pm. For those of you who know him, F1gm3nt, Kimy, will be DJing for the night. So come out! The address is 34-27 28th Avenue in Astoria. Rapture Lounge
