Simply put, I don't get it. In no way do I mean any offense to any of you. There is no shortage of awesome New Jersey people here, but I just don't get this love affair with your state.

I was transferred to my companies New Jersey headquarters four years ago from Wisconsin. I settled on living in eastern PA after finding that I couldn't afford to buy a house in Jersey, and where I could afford too, I wouldn't live there if my life depended on it, which was exactly the case.

I constantly hear people brag about how great Jersey is. But why?? Granted, there are parts that are very nice like northwestern Jersey and the Cape May area. But yesterday was my first trip to Asbury Park. And if I can play off Anthony and Voss's jokes, when did our government turn that shithole into a Beirut warzone training ground?

Look at Newark, Asbury Park, Jersey City, Neptune, Rahweh, Carlstdat, Trenton, Camden the list goes on and on. I still don't get the Jersey Shore thing, crowded, dirty cities up and down most of the coast, Parkway traffic, tolls and you go through this why? Your taxes are outrages and your insurance commission borders on criminal activity. When I ask Jerseyites (or is it Jerseyians?) why do they tolerate paying so much in tolls, I hear, well if we didn't our taxes would be outrages. Hello, you pay the same Federal as everyone else, your state taxes are higher than most of the country and your gas tax is average.

I travel the country quite extensively, and I challenge you that no other coastal state has so much decaying beachfront real estate as Jersey. Most coastal areas around the country are postcard picturesque. Would you call a place like Asbury Park or the non casino areas of Atlantic City picturesque?

What is it that makes Jersey so great?? Help a poor transplanted mid-westerner understand. Please

Well I grew up in Jersey City and I most tell you there are alot more bader cities then that.

I now live in Belmar on the shore I would not want to live any were else. It is a very nice town the bars are fun and the locals for the most part are really nice people. The problem with the traffic on the parkway is because all the god damn bennies who live up north decide they are goign to come to my town and others like it and make it dirty and crowded.(no offence Joey Big Arms)

You also have not seen all the beautiful farm land that there is in jersey. Go to Freehold ,Imlaystown , Milstone, even Wall. You will see beautiful landscapes of wide open fields that transform into beautiful fields of fruits and vegtables that complainers like you enjoy all year round. I would never leave this state.

Oh Swallow, believe me, you are speaking to another transplanted Midwesterner. MO/KS born and bred. I've lived about everywhere. SO-
Why the fuck do I keep coming back here???
Well, it's NOT for Newark, Paterson, Jersey City, Asbury Park, the whole damn NJ Tpk., etc, etc. All of those cities have lovely neighborhoods left still. As for the Tpk-let's not speak of the hopelessly damned...
Hey, every state has its bad areas. Granted ours, when bad, are SPECTACULARLY bad...

I don't KNOW why I like it here so much.
Put it this way-the suburbs and countryside are really nice. From Teaneck (where I lived, mostly, from age 11 to 28-still live 10 minutes away) on down to the Oranges, through Bernardsville, and all the way South. A lot of beauty to be found.

It is farm country where it hasn't been ruined.
And out West Jersey-Wayne, Morristown, Hopatcong, Sparta, Dover, Byram Township, Phillipsburg, Hackettstown, Stanhope, Hamburg...gorgeous. Just get off the main roads, and you'll be quite impressed at how pretty and peaceful it is.

Um, I like the people too.

That was by far Kevin Smith's WORST movie. It wasn't very good at all. And that was on top of the fact that he made us wait like two years for it because of legal hassles and whatnot.

The parkway, turnpike, route 80 and all of those cities you named do suck but there is still some good stuff around. Personally, I hate the state but that's just me.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

First off, we're Jersey-ian.... and the best way to put is from an old article that was written a couple of years ago when Springsteen did his 15 show stand at the Meadowlands...

"Jersey is the only state that so overpowers its namesake that you can drop the New when referring to it. Try that with Hampshire, York, or Mexico. Jersey is the only state other than Texas to have a cohesive, distinct personality. Our mascot is the devil. Jersey is short, tough, and looking for a fight..... that's what being from New Jersey is really about: feeling things in Bruce Sprinsgteen songs. I have a hungry heart. I am in the dumps with the mumps as an adolescent pumps his way into his hat."

Well I can definately give cudous to Jersey-ians for having attitude. I have to admit that other than maybe Texans, no other state citizens are as passionate about their love for their state as Jersey folk. The interesting parallel is that for anyone that has been to Texas would understand, that is another state that you visit and shake your head wondering what do people see here.

So far cudos to Froy and Kid for defending Jersey on attitude.

Nah, it still sucks. Maybe if we could eliminate the shit parts and combine the rest it would be cool but I think the negatives far outweigh the good. Even the backwoods of Jersey suck. I have to travel through basically all of Sussex County to get up here to Mass and it SUCKS. Most boring stretch of driving you will encounter.

Click here to find out why New Jersey is so great!!

Actually, I agree with a lot of your points. The taxes are outrageous, insurance sucks, parkway tolls, overall cost of living...

But having been a resident of Teaneck (hey Claire!!) my whole life, I'd say that judging the whole state based on Newark and Camden is just unfair. That'd be like judging Opie and Anthony on the merits of Lady Di and Marion. Hell, I've been through pretty crappy parts of Pennsylvania (Allentown, for example), but I would be wrong if I said PA was a shithole. And concerning the Jersey Shore, check out Seaside Heights, Pt. Pleasant, Wildwood, and Long Beach Island. All are still beautiful.

Oh, and DOGMA is by far Kevin Smith's BEST movie!!!

first off, Dogma is definitley not the definitive NJ movie because Pittsburgh was the substitute for Red Bank, which just should not have happened. Clerks is a definitive NJ movie cuz it was filmed entirely in Leonardo, they have the Leonardo ambulances come pick the chick and the dead guy at the end. second, Asbury Park has been the way it is since the riots in 68 when it was engulfed in flames, actually it was marginally worse in the 70s and 80s. anyway, where i live in Monmouth County, im about 7 miles from the beach, 50 from the city, and 70 from philly, all within about an hour or so's reach, yet im in the burbs. i love it where im at, besides that, the type of music i listen to is primarily in the NY/NJ area cuz thats where alot of the best bands come from. shit, i dunno theres alot of good things i can say about this area but i guess you have to grow up here or live here long enough to appreciate it and have a little bit of Jersey pride.

Um, no, Clerks shows our fucking attitude just a little bit better :)

I honestly love Jersey. You could go to one town and it's a total city and then go 10 miles away and its woods. We have the ocean, lakes, rivers, forests, farmland, great parks...and then tons of shopping centers, malls, stadiums, baseball parks, and buildings...
Now, I'm not saying we're perfect: traffic, fucking bennies, taxes, tolls, too much overcrowding...but I like it. Visit Red Bank, Point Pleasant, Jackson, Cape May, LBI, Freehold, the Atlantic Highlands, and just about anywhere in South Jersey to get a better idea...

You can't judge Jersey by Asbury Park or Camden, especially when there is a massive renovation of Newark taking place. And let's not forget that Bergen County is one of the richest counties in the entire country.

Ok, I live in Central New Jersey, and I am not saying that New Jersey is all that, cause it's not. But, in my opinion, start from central jersey and go north, and you will find some nice counties, like Mercer county. Also, what you are saying o&a swallow, is what i would say to you if you were still in Wisconsin and you liked it there. It all has to do with familiar surrondings i guess.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.

is it really? huh...i have lived in bergen county for 8 years and i never knew that. i have lived in jersey all my life and i love it...i don't know why...but i do. although, what i do hate is the small town that i live in where everyone has to know everything about everyone elses lives..oh well i guess its like that everywhere.

I have lived in a lot of places in this great country. Pennsylvania, DC, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, NJ, Orlando Fl, Idaho, Back to VA, CT, Back to VA. My company gave me a chance to pick where I wanted to go. I asked for NJ. I can be in Manhattan in <30 minutes usually. If I head west, I can easily reach the quiet, lakes and backwoods areas. Delaware water gap is good recreation. Wildwood is still free beach, and is as good or better than Daytona and Ft Lauderdale. Yeah, insurance sucks, taxes suck, etc. NJ is 47th in size, and 9th in population. That should speak volumes. When asked where I am from, It's NJ. I love NJ, and plan to retire here.

Heaaa fishy fishy fishy fishy. And it went, wherever I, did go!
