Do you know why we didn't make the playoffs? Ron Low overplaying Richter, Sather trading Ulanov WAY too late, and the shittiest D in the league. Not to mention all the stupid penalties they took this year. And watch Osgood let in another one of his million goals let in from the Centre Line. If only Al McInnis was in the Eastern Conf...

2002 Crack Committee Objectives:

1. 94 Wins and NL East Title by the Mets this year

2. Hate the Braves with a passion

3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year

4. Mets win World Series!!!

2001-2002 NEW YORK RANGERS SEASON REPORT CARDS

(In order to Goals Scored)

Eric Lindros- Center #88 37 Goals, 36 Assists, 73 Points
You have to be satisfied with the individual season that Lindros put up. He played over 70 games which is something any Ranger fan would have took before the season started. He was one of the best players for the first part of the season until his mild concussion that he susstained in late December in San Jose. He went into a little downslide after that, and the team never recovered. Lindros however did, and finished strong with the addition of Pavel Bure on his wing. Lindros did not lead the Rangers to the playoffs, but still met expectations and it exceeded them in many areas.
GRADE: B+

Theo Fleury- Right Wing #14 24 Goals, 38 Assists, 62 Points
It was a great start for Fleury playing on the FLY line with Lindros and York, but as the Rangers game dwindled the second half of the season, so did Fleury's. Fleury continues to be a loose cannon on the ice and its affecting his game. Fleury only scored 9 goals in the calendar year of 2002, and thats not good enough for a guy who has more than the potential to score 40+ goals. His antics off and on the ice overshadowed his performance on the ice, and despite the very good start, his season was another dissapointment and his Ranger career is likey over because of it.
GRADE: C+

Petr Nedved- Center #93 21 Goals, 25 Assists, 46 Points
A terrible season for Nedved. He is a very inconsistent player and doesnt play with the fire and grit that is needed to overcome long stretches of poor play. Nedved is certainly a talented player and has potential, but he lacks the mental capacity and the determination to succeed. He along with linemate Radek Dvorak never could recover from the loss of linemate Jan Hlavac, and despite his 21 goals, it was a very poor season for Petr Nedved.
GRADE: D+

Radek Dvorak- Right Wing #20 17 Goals, 20 Assists, 37 Points
Dvorak's season ended a month early and it was a rather dissapointing season for what looked like could be a promising one. Dvorak ended last year on a rampage and it gave you hope for a real good 2002, but with the loss of Hlavac on the Czechmates line, he and Nedved never got going. If he didnt get hurt, he would have scored 20 goals, but thats still below expectations for Dvorak and a down season for him.
GRADE: D+

Andreas Johansson- Left Wing #26 14 Goals, 11 Assists, 25 Points
Johansson as most Rangers started off the season very well and looked to be a pleasant surprise, and as most Rangers he went downhill at the end of the season. Johansson never recovered from breaking his wrist back in late December. He was non existent the last 2 months of the season. Scored about 2 goals in that time span and was just taking up space.
GRADE: C

Pavel Bure- Left Wing #9 12 Goals, 8 Assists, 20 Points
You couldnt have asked for more from Bure in his 12 games as a Ranger. The guy is a scoring machine and provided a spark to the Rangers offense. Im really looking forward to seeing a full season of Bure in a Ranger uniform. He keeps playing like this, he will easily break Adam Graves' team record of 52 goals in a season. If the Rangers could of somehow gotten Bure a few games earlier, they may still be playing right now.
GRADE: A+

Brian Leetch- Defensemen #2 10 Goals, 45 Assists, 55 Points
Leetch's game seems to be deteriorating year after year. His defensive game is still lacking, and his offensive production is going down. You usually get more than just 10 goals out of Brian Leetch. There were too many games where he was just nowhere to be found and didnt make his presence known, which is not usual of Leetch. He went back to being the Captain for most of the season with Messier out, and his play with the "C" on the sweater has never been real good. You have to question his leadership skills.
GRADE: C

Sandy McCarthy- Right Wing #10 10 Goals, 23 Assists, 33 Points
McCarthy is different from most Rangers this year. His play wasnt as great the beginning of the season, but he stepped it up big time towards the end of the season, and provides basically a bit of everything for this team. He can be tough, He can fight, He can score big goals, He is the heart and soul right now of this Ranger team.
GRADE: B

Matthew Barnaby- Left Wing #36 8 Goals, 13 Assists, 21 Points
Barnaby is similar to McCarthy in that he started off slow, but then got going. It took Barnaby awhile to fit in and get his game going with the Rangers, but he did indeed do that. He scored some big goals, and is a guy who is always there to stick up for his teammates. Barnaby is a guy you can count on to show up and give you all he got for most nights.
GRADE: B-

Mark Messier- Center #11 7 Goals, 16 Assists, 23 Points
The tank is just about empty on the career of Mark Messier. Injuries sidelines Messier for the majority of the season and never got a chance to mark his presence on this year's team and to lead this team into the Playoffs. I think his presence was sorely missed for the end of the season, as he is the greatest leader in team sports, but his on ice skills have deteriorated and it might be in his best interest to just call it a career, and a great one at that.
GRADE: C-

Vladimir Malakhov- Defensemen #23 6 Goals, 21 Assists, 27 Points
Well at least Malakhov stayed healthy for the entire season, unlike last year when he played only a handful of games. Malakhov looked really good the first half of the season, and dissapeared for the most part in the 2nd half. His production was so bad, that Low couldnt even have him play with Leetch on the Power Play, and was forced to put Fleury on the point, which turned out to be a disaster for the most part.
GRADE: C+

Mikael Samuelsson- Right Wing #37 6 Goals, 16 Assists, 22 Points
The guy they got for Adam Graves really didnt do much positively or negatively for this team. You would have liked to have gotten a little more out of him, but basically he was just another guy on the ice that nobody really notices or cares about.
GRADE: C-

Michal Grosek- Right Wing #8 3 Goals, 2 Assists, 5 Points
He never really got a chance here. He tore it up in Hartford and was recalled but injuries set him back and he could not play himself back into the lineup.
GRADE: C-

Martin Rucinsky- Right Wing #19 3 Goals, 10 Assists, 13 Points
Didn't do much until he was put on a line with Bure and Lindros and then racked up a nice amount of points. But then again, probably anybody could have put up that amount of points playing with Lindros and Bure who were both on fire. The jury is still out on Rucinsky for next year and whether the Rangers will resign him. But you cant complain with what he gave them the last month of the season.
GRADE: B-

Steve McKenna- Left Wing #21 2 Goals, 3 Assists, 5 Points
He's a good guy in the clubhouse and the teams go to fighter, but other than that he has no hockey skill whatsoever, and was dresses far too often by Low this season.
GRADE: C

Bryan Berard- Defenseman #34 2 Goals, 21 Assists, 23 Points
Maybe he should have just stayed retired. I dont know but 2 goals out of an offensive defensiveman is not getting it done. Throw in the fact he is a brutal defensive player.
GRADE: D+

Roman Lyashenko- Right Wing #29 2 Goals, 0 Assists, 2 Points
Not much to judge Lyashenko on, but hes young and shows some promise. Can be a nice surprise for the Rangers next year.
GRADE: B-

Dave Karpa- Defenseman #33 1 Goal, 10 Assists, 11 Points
a Totally useless acquisition made by Glen Sather during the offseason. Karpa is good for two things. To provide nothing and to Take at least 2 minor penalties a game. He is awful.
GRADE: F

Tomas Kloucek- Defenseman #22 1 Goal, 3 Assists, 4 Points
Never got a chance to play here. It was mind boggling why this guy couldnt crack the lineup, when guys like Karpa and Ulanov were getting regular ice time every night. He didnt do much when he played and made mistakes, but never got a chance from the organization.
GRADE: C-

Tom Poti- Defenseman #4 1 Goal, 6 Assists, 7 Points
Im still not a big fan of the York for Poti trade, but we will see what Poti can really do next year. He is an offensive defensemen yet scored a total of 3 goals throughout the season. He scored a goal in his first game as a Ranger, but besides that didnt really do much in his 11 games as a Ranger.
GRADE: C

Rem Murray- Right Wing #17 1 Goal, 2 Assists, 3 Points
He was a throw in in the York-Poti trade and really didnt do much in his 11 games here and never made his presence known.
GRADE: C-

Sylvain Lefebvre- Defenseman #24 0 goals, 5 Assists, 5 Points
Another useless defenseman who got way too much playing time. Provides absolutely nothing offensively, and very little defensively.
GRADE: D

Dale Purinton- Defenseman #5 0 Goals, 4 Assists, 4 Points
Another young defenseman never given a chance to do his thing. He improved alot at the end of the season and finally started playing his game and not depending on being a goon. Thats what a little development will do.
GRADE: C-

Mike Richter- Goaltender #35 24 Wins, 26 Losses, .906 Save Pct.
Richter put up another very good season and kept the team in alot of games. Its not easier playing goal with the Rangers lack of defense ahead of him. He received a season ending injury in the Rangers terrible loss to Atlanta, a game he shouldnt have been playing in by the way, but it was another good year for Richter.
GRADE: B

Dan Blackburn- Goaltender #31 12 Wins, 16 Losses, .898 Save Pct.
You couldnt have asked for more in his rookie season as an 18 year old. This kid shows great potential to be something really special. Next year I would like to see the Rangers resign Ricther and platoon Richter and Blackburn, so that in a year or two, Blackburn is ready to step up and be a big time Ranger goaltender for many years to come. He was shaky at times this year, but his good moments far outshine his bad moments this season.
GRADE: B+

Ron Low- Head Coach
Terrible job for him and his career as Ranger Head Coach is over. Look at the talent that Low has ahead of him and the fact that this team is not in the Playoffs is a bad sign for him. He levels out no discipline, doesnt motivate, and doesnt implement strategies or systems to get this team over. Sits down young kids when they make mistakes, but lets the Karpa's, Ulanov's and Lefebvre's of the world stink up the joint night after night. Low is gone, Good Riddance.
GRADE: F

Glen Sather- General Manager
Sather should take a hit here too. He hasnt done much for this team in his 2 years here. We didnt bring Sather in after 3 years of no playoffs, so he can add at least 2 more years to that streak. The Lindros deal worked out. But signing Karpa and Ulanov was a huge waste of money. Gave up on Malhotra, and gave away a 23 year old All Star, Olympian, and the heart of the team for an offensive defenseman who totaled 3 goals this year. This is a big offseason for Sather with some big time free agents out there, he needs to rebound, because he has been a failure so far in his 2 years in New York.
GRADE: D

Giving Bure the #9 jersey was in incredible poor taste by the Rangers. Graves was the heart and soul of the Rangers when he was with them, no question about it. He gave 110% every night, whether they were winning 5-0 or losing 5-0. So what if they asked for Graves' permsission? What was he gonna do, be a dick and say No? Just poor taste by the Rangers.

I don't care what number Bure is wearing, once Graves retires hopefully the Rangers retire his numbers to the rafters. How about rating the team: D-

2002 Crack Committee Objectives:

1. 94 Wins and NL East Title by the Mets this year

2. Hate the Braves with a passion

3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year

4. Mets win World Series!!!

FB,
good summary. Any differences I might have in grade would just be nitpicking.
Messier could continue if he is willing to be the 3rd line - checking center. He seemed willing to do that this season before the injury.

Rangers were hurt this year by Olympic break. They had several players play who probably could have better used rest (Leetch among them).

Lyashenko among those playing for Calder cup in Hartford, and has scored a goal in the playoffs. As I said in an earlier post, I had heard that he was a key to the Rucinsky deal. Hopefully he continues to show improvement
