OK, cool debate.

My theory:

The big bang was God's firecracker. Ever see how Gucci, etc. pack different types of gunpowder the right way to make the effect they want?

Well, what if god packed all the subatomic particles in the universe into a package the size of a pin in so precise a way that he/she could predict that the placement of electron alpha next to neutron beta would mean you were born on the day you were born. And the placement of proton delta next to electron zeta in the big bang was responsible for the creation of the moon.

OR it was all just a big coincidence and there is no reason for any of it. Remember...42.

Fayth is a pile of shit...the only thing that should be beleived in is yourself. The quicker you walk away from it, the more free and objective you get...and that can only be a good thing. Walking under a cloud of murk that's is supposed belief and tradition only encumbers oneself. It's ok to understand it, but never let it rule your perception.

Here's a tip that will save you alot of grief and time...

Don't believe in and depend on anyone but yourself.

I think (from my catholic upbringing) that if it doesn't violate the ten commandments, what's the problem? It doesn't do so that I can think of. Our bodies are "temples", so doesn't it also make repairs to the "temple" easier?

I think that some sort of God thing did something that made something like the big bang happen and then humans came about and such. But God definately didn't create humans originally. I was brought up catholic but i dont go to church or believe in any of it anyway. its all a load of crap. Organized religion is for the weak minded who can't think on their own so they follow the group.

Sounds like we have a bunch of adherents to the Ted Turner School of Theology. I've always had a strong interest in religion, but purely from a sociological point of view. Not to sound like an elitist, but passionate religion is almost entirely the possession of the weak minded (notice I did not say unintelligent).

Yes...but not blindly.;)

I went to Catholic schools for my entire education. I wouldn't trade it for anything. The Jesuits and Franciscans are on the "edge" as far as Catholicism is concerned. One of the best courses I took in college was "Science and Religion". The teacher was a complete geek but the material kept my interest and I got an A. Anyway, the best theories I received from this class were from one of Aldous Huxley's uncles (sorry, can't remember the name...must be outside of that 8% we remember) and Thomas Aquinas...

(Anonymous) Huxley's theory was the "Clock-maker" where he proposed a universe of extraordinary precision, like a Swiss watch, and then let it operate of it own devices, sat back and watched. And one of Aquinas' laws was that you can't get something from nothing...this one can give you headaches in it's simplicity, but then again, the Vatican's argument was that God is, was and will be forever. BTW, you're better off forming you're own religion than anything you're taught.

I know this has been debated on the board in the past, but it made for interesting radio. Thanks.

I loved it today with Anthony shooting down the fundamentalists and everything. It's true about the Bible, it's just a book!! Why do we put so much faith into it?

Always have loved this damn debate.

Q: How could random chance have created us?
A: The Universe is incomprehensibly huge. That's a lot of randomness. Sometime, somewhere, eventually, the right combinations or stuff will come together.
Q: How could everything in the Universe be random chance?
A: The Big Bang was one big explosion. Everything is random as a result.
Q: But how could such a huge great universe be created, all by chance? How can you deny that some being created it all?
A: We are tiny, primitive beings that have only existed for 35,000 years in our current form. That's roughly 0.0002% of the current age of the universe. Just because we are not technologically able to comprehend HOW or WHY it's all here, that doesn't automatically mean that some magical guy that lives in the sky did it.

Just a quick aside for you, IBoy...you reminded me. Senior year in high school, I was a leader on a Jesuit retreat and I had to give a speech on Leadership that was the last speech of the 3 days of sleep deprivation...you wanna talk about crying babies...damn, it was pretty intense at the time, now I look back and laugh at their techniques. So, I started this speech by denigrating the bible and throwing it out an open window. I had arranged a cool David Letterman sound effect of breaking glass (dates me, I know) to be played by my Psych teacher at just the right moment...the tool delayed the effect, just perfectly, by about 3 seconds...the room broke up laughing...yes, you had to be there to see the look on my face. Regardless, listening today brought that back to me...so much for the bible.;)

Thank you FTL. You just put into words how I've felt about this for years. I can't believe the level of conceit that is necessary to think that we are capable of understanding how the world, let alone the universe, came to be.

Thanks Mr. Ventura.

I have had this debate countless times. As an atheist, there isn't an iota of religious faith in me. I put it this way...

Religion is man's worst invention.

And as far as the bible is concerned, the only difference between The Bible & The Cat in the Hat is that The Cat in the Hat rhymes, and we know excatly who wrote it.

Sheesh...in the end, I AGREE. I was just offering up something to the "faithful".

BTW, thanks (not really:)) for answering my question about what a Sybian is...

People with faith in a higher power feel secure in the fact that their belief in something they can't see is noble.

Atheists/agnostics feel secure in the fact that they are logical and more enlightned then the "weak minded".

When you get down to it, you are all fucking annoying.

I've read the messages. Some people have made their point quite eloquently.
I must depart from that.I have to throw in that it was "religion" or faith or whatever you want to call it...when those F'ING BASTARDS killed thousands of innocent people on Sept.11,2001.[AND let's not forget THE CRUSADES while we're at it]
The End. I'm still so sad and angry about what happenned.

All I can hear is Norton's voice now. "Uggh religion" What a crock it is. What ever happened to the ape theory (evolution)? Seems a lot more logical to me. Religion is for the weak and needy. I dont wanna be a follower of some rediculous book written a million years ago. Religion MY ASS. Why would this guy thats called god make something as beautiful as this world and then make stuff like huricanes, cancer,Bin fuckin Laden and so on? Ask all the little boys that horny priests molest on a day to day basis. Ever notice all the people who are high a mighty on god always seem to have something hiding in their closet? I ranting now. Gotta go before I start getting upset at my parents for forcing me to go to CCD. Damn I hated that too.

Religion has been the excuse for war, murder, and genocide for as long as man has walked the earth.
It will never end.
