Like him or not, the point his he speaks his mind and about his experiences in life so what is the real problem people have with him? If you dont like it just lower the volume when it is on or change the station. Nobody is forcing you to buy his cd. Plus who buys Cd's these days? That is what Limewire and Imesh are for.

ok i guess i can chime in here

i do a hip-hop show on the radio and i for one can say eminem has not made a good album yet

he has talent but i guess he has decided not to let everyone else who listens to mainstream hip-hop see it yet

this album is garbage and he should be shot

eminem = sellout

dont be ignorant, to say that you dont like his music is one thing, but to say he has no talent is just a stupid remark.

quote:

Eventhough I am personally not a big fan of rap music, it is a talent....Have you ever tried to rhyme at the speed he does? It's not an easy thing to do, and even practice will not make you as good as many of the rappers out there, so in that regard it is a talent.

Those who think that rap is "music" are the ignorant ones. I'll give you the fact that rhyming is a talent, but this talent does not make what comes out of his mouth "music". Eminem and many other rappers can't sing or play an instrument. They are not "musicians". You might be able to call them poets, but what they produce definitely isn't "music". The music-buying public has bought this crap for too many years, another example of the dumbing-down of society.

quote:

Acctually, Eminem placed 2nd in the rap olympics or whatever they are called

..you didn't actually say this, did you? What happened, the French judge was forced to vote for someone else?

In the 50's and 60's, similar arguments were used to discredit rock 'n roll musicians. In the 20's, similar arguments were used to discredit swing music. You're not exactly breaking any new ground with comments such as these:
quote:

Those who think that rap is "music" are the ignorant ones. I'll give you the fact that rhyming is a talent, but this talent does not make what comes out of his mouth "music". It's as lame as the mantra of the Stern Zombies, except substituting "O&A have no talent, they are ripoffs" with "Eminem has no talent, he can't sing or play instruments." Anyone with an understanding of talk radio knows the former to be a statement of ignorance, anyone with an understanding of hip-hop and music in general knows the latter statement to be ignorant. Quite simply, you're in no position to judge another's talent unless you understand what he does and can weigh him objectively against his peers.

According to Websters:

music a: n. the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity

b: vocal, instrumental or mechanical sounds having rhythm or melody.

This says nothing about talent. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's not music. I haven't been a fan of rap since the late '80s, but I do acknowldge it takes talent to make the music. Not just to do it vocally, but I think it takes tremendous musical ability to run the turntables the way DJs in hip-hop acts do, too.

I'm not a fan of Eminem. He does too much self-promoting for my tastes. To me, hip-hop, as is the case with all music, should provide entertainment or give you something to think about. It should be all about the person doing the vocalizing. If the singer in my band did that, I wouldn't be in the band anymore.

But try not to call people ignorant unless you know the facts. You can disagree with them, but it's just an opinion.

So by your definition, do you know that most of the great conductors would not be considered musicians? Yes most of them did play piano, but their real genius came from composing music, which is what Eminem, to a lesser extent of course, does.

I rather resent that, since I am not the one with the flawed guidelines as to waht music is.

"You know what, don't turn it off. Listen to something different once in a while. Hip Hop, Trance, Country, Classical. Broaden your horizons a little bit. Hip-hop today is nothing like it was when you decided you didn't like it. Rock has changed dramatically too.

I'm rambling horribly, I'm going to give up now."

please...broadening your horizons dosen't mean listening to this wigger. I like many different types of music but I would never put this garbage in my cd player.

Yea hip hop these days is nothing like it was years ago, it's even fucking worse! its over commercialized bullshit with these goddamn talentless "musicians" with their "bling bling" and cars, all they care about is how much money they have and banging fat chicks, actual music means nothing to them.

Eminem...he stinks and I don't like him! He sucks donkey balls and I don't know why they play his crappy music. They play him on WBCN in Boston too. Probably because he's a white guy. For some reason, the rock stations play rap if it's from white dudes. He is only famous becuase he pisses people off and is controversial. Thats how Marylin Manson got famous too...no musical talent, but pisses people off.

Exactly, the "rock" stations in philadelphia only play "rap rock" exept for y100, they don't play any all hip-hop artists exept for eminem, I have always thought that the only reason they will play that hiphop is because it's a white guy.

Sir Okonkwo: where exactly does M&M's "music" fit into this definition?

quote:

But try not to call people ignorant unless you know the facts.

My use of the word "ignorant" was in response to others calling me ingnorant and closed-minded. I'm well aware that musical tastes are all about opinions.
quote:

That's your opinion. I think my guidelines are quite reasonable.

Did you even read the definition?

Do the beats compose themselves? Oh, no they don't Dre and Eminem create them, and thus are composing music....Perhaps if you could get over the fact that you don't like his music, you'd see the flaw in your logic....And before you argue that I should do the same thing, I remind you that I said I don't like his music.

Really, so I guess Wagner, Mozart, Bach, Rossini, Verdi, Williams and other composers do not make music? At least according to your definition, they do not play an instrument, they do not sing, but they compose....Face facts, and realise you are wrong for once.

No, they usually just steal, I'm sorry, "sample" it from others who previously composed it.

I never excluded composers. I just didn't specifically include them. What I said was:
quote:

Music requires some sort of talent, like singing or playing an instrument, neither of which M&M does.

I'm not a big fan of classical music, but I can appreciate it because I played it in high school when I was in the orchestra. Composers, arrangers and conductors have much more musical talent than M&M ever will, and I don't consider M&M or Dr. Dre a "composer" of music.
quote:

....Face facts, and realise you are wrong for once.

I'm not "wrong" about this .. my opinion just differs from yours.

Eminem does not sample that much. For those arguing about how much he sucks, how often do you listen to him? Do you own all his stuff?

Most likely not. Keep that mind closed....people like you getting some knowledge is a scarey thought.

I've heard several of his "songs", and I don't like any of them. Why would I own any of his stuff if I don't like it?

Learning about (c)rap is "getting knowledge"? No thanks. I already have more knowledge than you'll ever know. I even know that you spell it scary.

Read the bold text, it does'nt matter if they sample other people's work, the fact that they piece it together with self-made beats is, BY DEFINITION, composing....Saying you don't consider them to be composers of music is like arguing that the world is not round...You can't change facts.

Regarding the Rage/Cornell tracks that were leaked, they don't have actual names yet...anything that is out there is just a working title. Also, they're just demos...the final version that will be in stores will be reworked quite a bit.

And for anyone that says hip-hop isn't real music, take a listen to the Roots. Best Hip-hop band around, they play all their own instruments and don't rhyme about stupid shit like diamond rings and cars.

I've listened to (c)rap and I don't like it. That makes me close-minded? No, it means that it doesn't suit my tastes. I used to work in a record store, so I've heard more than my fair share of it.
