O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01	I write this thread with a Veteran Newbies view on the "why is the board slowing" threads. OA.Com has a very definitive hierachy. At it's core are a diverse group comprising the board's star chamber. These are the posters from the beginning that know all the workings of the board and all the insiders knowledge: Who has multiple names, what banned member has a new moniker etc. These are the members that can crush newbies with their ire. After them come the lesser veterans. Still wielding awesome powers but not amongst the elders. I think I have just reached third tier status. The been around a few months, know a little of what's going on, have a few friends who will help me out if I am getting flamed. But sometimes it felt like I was swimming up hill to get here. As a productive contributor it does irk me that the elders rarely acknowledge my presence...... or when they do it is to inform me most members think me an asshole. When I came here I did not opt for adoption, cause I wanted to be me. I did not want someone to mold me into a clone. When someone writes something stupid - respond with Dillon. When you hate someone tell them to get in the coffin. etc. In the past I have seen newer members post a new thread and get the "We had that thread 6 months ago do a fucking search deek". I recently asked a question (which all elders should know) and got a response that " I wish there was a thread newbies could stay in till they got to know things around here" Well maybe that isn't a bad idea. Adoption failed, but there must be a way of incorporating new members into the fold. Cause currently all the elders say we need 'em, yet at the same time, view 'em as a nuisance. That is my 2 cents

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00	Personally, Ken, I don't believe in board hierarchy. Don't get me wrong...there is some level of it there, but I came on this board ignoring the conventions, saying what I had to say, and did not ply for acceptance or come here to boost my own pittance of an ego. But, this board heirarchy is a perception, not a reality. The key is to have some measure of "board" social skills, some couth, a bit of tact, and have a reasonable and personal disposition to do it. That's my take. Here's a tip that will save you alot of grief and time... Don't believe in and depend on anyone but yourself.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00	the board does have a hierarchy, wether we want to admit it or not.if a regular member hates you at about 10 posts or so, you'll have an uphill battle to being liked, because people havent seen ennough to know you, but one person who they do know hates you, so you must suck.thats the highest level of the board.then comes the people without much influence, but the board knows them.they post often, have a personality, and are regarded as friends by one or two members.next comes those who i like to call "the unknown regs".they post often, but dont show much of a personality.people dont really know them, since they dont go to parties, either.these people frequently go to about 500posts before getting a status.finally, at the bottom, is the lowly newbie.doesnt know the people, the customs, or the workings of the board.these ranks do exist, but its not set in stone. and as for being ingored as a newbie, it doesnt stop.i've made a few, in my opinion, great posts, but they've gone completely unnoticed by the board.i'm not bitter about it, i dont care, but it does happen, to me and probably most of the board. Most conversations you and other mods\elders have are among yourselves. Seph has said a few words to me. Kid replied a couple times. VG once said "no". The point to my thread is that it takes a long while for a newbie to feel some degree of inclusion and being part of the game. If I was a super genius I would have a solution. But I was merely trying to help identify a piece of the problem.

There is nothing worng with this, b/c I tend to do it too these days. There was a time when this site was addictive, and one had to check in every few minutes b/c so much went on. But, alas, that was never permenant...and what people fail to recognize is that this current state of the board was always the norm, and the past just a temporary abberation. If you're here long enough and you dont fuck up really bad, it's not that hard to become a "Elder God." And Yes Ken, I've noticed you. I've been an active member here for over a year and I went virtually unnoticed until my brother decided to wear leather pants at a comedy club and I brought it up on the board. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00	Here's my take on it. In ye olden days (a year ago), the board would gain membership at an insane rate. Sometimes 100 a day, sometimes 100 an hour. Remember, this was before the days of nicey-nice. When a newbie joined, he got fucked with. It was the way of the board. And when you have so many members coming in, there are bound to be a few that are thick-skinned enough to make it and become a regular poster. Still others, like myself, would sit back, reply to threads, make a name for themselves that way, and eventually everyone just knows you. Hell, I remember ripping on a little newbie that went by the name of "i_rooned_it". That guy got torn to shreds, by tons of people, all over the place. Later he changed his name to Grumpy Ass Bastard..... you now know him as Grumpy. It goes to show - you don't HAVE to be nice to people to get them to stay.... it just takes a certain caliber of person to stick around. And that caliber of person is the type who is still around as a pre-nicey-nice member, or has left the board entirely once they got sick of it as it is. Basically the board is becoming what they/we all used to hate. MYLTF is a perfect example. And if she wants to argue that, I don't fucking want to hear it. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?
