Enough with this shit, it's for the fuckin birds. I've seen Spoo, Columbine, actors with hamsters in their ass and more in these threads lately, and it's boring me to tears. I throw down the gauntlet...

The GOOCH'S Challenge

And I challenge you guys to bring a modicum of wit and intelligence to what has become glorified chat threads, lately. Do it for the Gooch, the Gipper or even for the Gimp you keep in your basement, but I'd like to see a bit more quality. The winner will get the fabled Gooch Trophy...

...which sits waiting in the hallowed halls of the Chez Gooch for some poster to pick up and run with it. And those that are offended......

So, step it up, or clock-out back to your same old boring thread. But, you know where that goes...

Here's a tip that will save you alot of grief and time...

As for putting up, I have. I have issued a challenge. The rest is up to you. And don't post in here being all defensive and paranoid, that is a dragggggggggggggg. I want action. the kind of action Marco gets in his pants when he see Froy singing Born to Run.

Gooch: Not trying to be a dick, but some of those threads that you mentioned have entertained a majority of the board...and for god's sake, it's a weekend. I know that you have been pissed off lately, but you are starting to sound like Kid A with his "Entertain Me" thread.

Get two things right...

You are correct, I AM A DICK. Though I hear from Ant that Fez won 1st place in the DICK vote by a twat-hair.

As for starting to sound like Kid A with his "Entertain Me" thread.....I leave that up to your discretion. I couldn't care less how I sound.

...But don't sit in my thread and start harping on me. I asked to be challenged, not get into an argument of semantics. I will not argue in here, nor get into any useless bullshit. Your opin is valid, though I think your take on it is limited to the thin-skins that are around here. I am hardly pissed.

Gooch, I have always respected you intelligence and as a mod…so I will take the gauntlet.

The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon brought me to thinking, do we really need a president? We all know that the president has his trusted group of advisors that help him make decisions, which is just fine and dandy but sometimes I get the feeling that Bush relies on them too much. He just seems like the person that always let other people do the work for him. This is just my opinion but I think bush is just a figurehead to keep our hopes up that there is someone in power who knows exactly what we are doing ...but sadly there ISNT. This is just my opinion and my views on our current "Leader".

I don't understand the correlation between the 9-11 atacks and the President's reliance on his advisors. Are you insinuating that if the president relied less on his advisors, that somehow would've prevented the attacks?

Of course there isn't. The President(past, present, and future) just like the rest of us are simply human and quite capable of error. It's not possible for one person to know exactly what to do. That is the purpose of his advisors, to advise. They all venture their opinions and present different points of views on certain situations so that the President's final decision will be an informed one.

Okay, here's my question, related to the challenge of this thread. And mind you, this question can be disregarded if it is too specific or way off the point of the initial author's intention.

When our constitutional writers signed the constitution, they instituted one of the most ancient forms of government - the theory of mixed government.

Going back to the ancient Greeks, this form of government included an executive and a two-house legislature. According to the theory of mixed government, this stated that:
A monarchy (President) is necessary because he/she can make command and quick decisions, but this position can degrade into a tyrannical government. An aristocracy (Senate) is necessary because it maintains stability within a nation, but it can degrade into an oligarchy. A democracy (House) is necessary because it can adapt quickly to the demands of the whole, but it can degrade into anarchy.

Using this Lockean theory, the American Constitution was born, with the addition of a new idea, an independent judiciary.

With this in mind, our country was not born a republic or a democracy, but a democratic republic. That means that the people are not directly responsible for the creation of laws (democracy), but are not absolutely represented by others (republic). Citizens of the United States directly elect both Senators and Representatives who (hopefully) speak for them.

In the Constitution, the democratic section of a mixed republic (the House) was supposed to be gauged by population. The house membership started at 65 when the constitution was adopted. After every census, dependent upon the population, the number was supposed to rise or fall. And when the framers drafted this population-based increase or decrease, in order to keep the democratic voice active and represented, they never stated when the number of representatives were supposed to stop increasing. Okay, now for the real question, keeping all of that factual information in mind. And for all intents and purposes, the House of Representatives is still the main speaker for the people (the democracy), since the Senate is supposed to represent stability in the law-making process of our nation (one does not want both houses of the legislature dominated by the whims and impulses of the people, of course).

In the "Biographical Dictionary of the American Congress, 1774-1961," in 1910 the amount of representatives was capped off at 435. According to Congress, they stated that no matter how much the population of the United States rose after that, the number of representatives would remain the same. And of course, the number is still the same today.

Whoops. Now is the time for the question. Accordingly, with the dramatic increase in our population, and the number of representatives staying the same, our nation has increasingly moved (in terms of legislative concerns) from a democratic-republic towards to a republic. And with the importance of people having some type of say in the way they are governed, this situation can only degenerate.

So I ask you. What option do the people have? Pressing Congress for an increase in the number of representatives? Or a change in the theory of mixed government, with regards to the Senate? Or more pressure for direct election of our executive? Or does this lopsided ratio continue until the people really realize that their representatives don't truly speak for their constituents anymore?

As a footnote, in 1910, when the House of Representatives was capped, one representative represented 212,019 people on average. When the census was taken for the year 2000, one representative represented 646,946 people.

FMScott: I think that you might be too intelligent for this board, seeing as your question is actually very valid. I feel that the number of representitives has to increase, especially due to the fact that all of the baby-boomers baby's are about to have children. I think that our population is about to increase very rapidly and there is not going to be an accurate number of reps when compared to the population.

I read the FAQ's thoroughly and I saw NO requirements for requiring a brain. And for the record, I also threw down The Gauntlet. Threw it down and crushed it. Of all the movies Clint Eastwood has made, The Gauntlet was his worst. So don't go getting all high and mighty Gooch thinking your doing something original here. And if they release that worthless movie on DVD, I'll toss it like a Frisbee.

Too many reps is not what the country needs, that's just more Congressmen to muddle things and cause deadlocks. The important thing is how they are apportioned.

Enigma, I appreciate you reading the whole response - I didn't think anybody would. But, despite your commendable attention, you've fallen into the most common of paradoxes. How far should the number of representatives increase before it is too many to conduct legislative business?

Well, if you want a more simple question, here it is. The American Civil War. Everyone knows what it is, and the numerous reasons for its beginnings. The two most popular in acedemia and the general public? That the slavery issue came to its final head, or the southern states were exercising their rights as conditional members that made up the union. But I came upon an argument propogated by Dr. Forrest McDonald, a historian to be placed in the ranks of Baylin, Wood, McPherson, and Foote. He stated, and I quote:

[Regarding the Panic of 1857] The South, [obviously as opposed to the north] however, was unscathed by the economic depression . . . . Thus, threatened by the prospect of federal policies that would be ruinous to them, the southerners, not as an act of desperation but rather as an act of supreme self-confidence that they would thrive on their own, resorted to the ultimate expression of the states' rights dogma, secession.

What have you guys ever heard of this? In my eleven years of Civil War research (mind you, I'm only 24), this is the first I've heard of an economic reasoning to southern secession. And coming from McDonald, I think that I'd would have heard this from him sooner. What do you guys think? Is it still one of the predominant two, or McDonald's argument?

"That's what we're paid for, boys. We're gonna take care of this. We're going to find out who did this. They're not going to like me as President."
-President George W. Bush, 9/11/01

[edit] This quote comes from McDonald, Forrest, "States Rights and the Union, 'Imperium in Imperio,' 1776-1876," p. 166. [edit]

I will agree with that....the more people the harder it is to get anything to done. However, I feel that as the population changes, so should the number of reps because who knows what might happen. I'm not saying that it is probable, but it is possible that our population could increase dramatically over the next twenty years. I would just like to know that as the smaller states get more populated and the bigger states get even more populated, there will be an even representation of governement. I am hesitant to put a limit on anything government related...even though, as you pointed out, it is harder to do business with more bodies. However, it shouldn't be an easy job...otherwise people like me would be in office.
