When you count in years, you have to work your way up to 1. You don't start with 1. Not conviced? How old where you when you came out of your mother's shute, or test tube? Your weren't 1, you were seconds old. You have to start with zero. So if we base our calender on the birth of a particular person, That year in which Jesus was born was year 0.

so when you start to count to 10 you start from 0? Then when you get to 10 you will have 11, 0 is not a begining it is nothing.

When Dionysius Exiguus was working out a list of the dates of Easter. In the course of his work, he also reckoned the birth year of Christ, and designated it as 1 AD. Why did Dionysius leave out the Year Zero? That's an easy one. The counting system used in 6th century Rome did not include the concept of "zero." The idea of "zero" was unknown to Dionysius. The Gregorian Calendar Reform, as it came to be called, retained Dionysius' starting point of 1 AD and his system of counting the years, including its lack of a Year Zero. With the powerful influence of the Roman Catholic Church behind it, the Gregorian Calendar – with its starting point of 1 AD – was gradually adopted throughout the world.

You can argue that it's not logical. You can argue that Dionysius probably got the year of Christ's birth wrong. You can even find special-purpose calendar systems that do include a Year Zero. In deciding when the new century or millennium began, none of this matters. What matters is that the calendar we use today the Gregorian Calendar starts with the year 1 AD and has no Year Zero.

but, there is no year "0". There's a "1 AD" and a "1 BC" but, no "0". And, the fact remains that a millenium is 1000 years. It could be 1000 years from january 1st 2000 or january 1st 2001 or today. A thousand years is a thousand years no matter where you start or stop counting. As long as there are a thousand of them.

*Edit: If you believe as Snoteater that the 2000 was the first year of this "millenium" then you must also believe that World War II happened in the 19th century.

There is and was a year zero, because When you look at time on paper, you have a straight line. On both ends of this line is the beginning of time and now. This is a number line and as with all number lines you need a zero to to separte the the negative intergers with the postive intergers, in this case the BC from AD. And since time is considered to be linear this logic holds true. See the illistration below:

actually you have 10, because zero is nothing. You always start from 0 but you just don't realize it. let's say you want to put ten apples on a table, you start from 0 because you want to make sure that there is no apples on the table.
