GARY, Indiana (CNN) -- A 16-year-old student was shot to death Friday in the parking lot of a Gary, Indiana, high school, police tell CNN.

The victim was a 10th-grader at Lew Wallace High School. He was shot 8:10 a.m. CST, Gary Police Chief John Roby said.

The suspected shooter is 17 years old, police said, and has been taken into custody.

"The suspect walked up to the victim, put a gun to his head and fired it," Roby said. He said the shooting was "not random" and that no one else was injured.

The suspect is believed to be a former student, Roby said.

The Gary Post-Tribune newspaper reported that the victim was shot by a student who was expelled from the school last year.

"The student who was shot fatally was a student enrolled at Wallace High School," Gary School Superintendent Mary Guinn told Chicago TV station WBBM. "We have not had any problems of discipline with the student at all. He was enrolled in course work that certainly could lead to a promising future for him."

The Post-Tribune reported that the student was shot in a crowd. It was not known whether he was the target.

Guinn said the school's students were working with a district-wide crisis team.

"There is someone on site in each classroom helping them work through their issues and concerns and assuring them that the school is still a safe environment for them," Guinn said.
