But of all the teams that scuffled through April, none is more fascinating than the Yankees ? who wound up the month four games under .500 and 6½ games behind the first-place Orioles. Here are the ominous facts that apply strictly to them:

No Yankees team had been that far out of first after April since 1984. That team finished third, 17 games behind the Tigers.

No Yankees team has ever entered May that many games out and then come back to finish first.

And George Steinbrenner will really enjoy hearing that the 1979 Pirates are the only team since 1935, according to the Newark Star Ledger's Ed Price, to stumble out of April more than three games under .500 and still survive to win a World Series.
Hi. I'm the 2000 season. I'm the last time the Yankees won a World Series.

Hi. I'm the 2001 season. The last day of my season was the end of the Yankess dynasty, because they didn't win a championship, thus ending the streak of three championships in a row.
haw can a season from the past type?

and how can it be another season at the same time?
you know, if the Yankees played 500 ball from here on out, they'd still only be 4 games under 500.
if einstein had your math skillz he would have postulated string theory 20 years ahead of everyone else.
semantics, the yankees flat out suck and they dont appear to be in a position to improve much. kevin brown is awful. randy johnson is old and injured. bernie williams is a shell of his former self. pavano had one good season his entire career. giambi is garbage now that he's off steroids. they have the worst minor league system in the majors.

what big name aging superstar are you gonna pick up next year?
This argument is the equivalent of potsie mocking the fonz for not getting laid one night out of the year.
One, yeah, Carl Pavano had only one good season... and it was last year. On top of that, his entire career? He's younger than you!

Two, how is the worst in the minor league system? We still have over 150 players on our active minor league rosters. THey still perform, they still learn. THey teams do good.

24th out of 30.
Yeah i'm gonna take stock in a list that has the cards as its last place team, last i checked they had the best record in the NL.
its not about the majors, its a listing of minor league systems.

30. St. Louis Cardinals
Good thing big league team can rake, because Cardinals’ only significant talent is on mound.
The Yankees and Red Sox never have a good farm system because they always just trade them away for talent. The small market teams always have the best minor league talent. I didn't check the link, but I'd imagine that Milwaukee and Tampa Bay are well up on that list.
the red sox have an amazing farm system at this point in time.
21. Boston Red Sox
World Series championship wasn’t built on farm system, and improving talent remains thin.

sportsline power rankings......

14. New York Yankees - A $200 million franchise will now rely on kids -- albeit the few good ones in a near-vacant system.
pish posh.
suck on it soze!!!
