I don't remember, but I do know from my WWII history, that that was the last bridge crossing that river, and they needed to keep it intact to move allied forces back and forth across the river.

The US was already pretty good at creating temporary pontoon bridges for crossing rivers. Losing the "last bridge across the river" would only cause a delay of a few hours while the army corp of engineers put a replacement together. Inconvenient when your in the middle of a major offensive and have momentum on your side, but not major.
