He believed in the abolition of both government and organized religion, so much so that he started a little secret society to that end. Originally he began with five members and called it The Order of Perfectibilists. Later it was renamed the Order of the Illuminati, and it spread throughout Europe.
It wasn't just the Catholic Church, it was all government and all religion.
