for the most part, xp (and even 2k) will auto detect new hardware and install the driver w/o you having to do anything other than click a few 'ok' buttons. 95/98(SE) on the other hand usually require the user to know which drivers to use and where to find them (downloaded to local drive or came on floppy/cd w/ the NIC).
