I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just asking for an explanation of why.
While I'm at it, on my old PC (running XP), when I would search for temp internet files, I would get a lot. When I searched my temp files through Windows Explorer I would get a lot. On the new PC, there are never any temp files when I go through Windows Explorer, and when I do a search for *.tmp, I end up with maybe 10. Why is this?

Sweet, how did you try to do run disk cleanup - through the Start--->Programs--->, etc? menus?

Yes, start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup.
Actually, I have it pinned to my Start menu, so I don't do all that. That wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?
I get the box the pops up that says: "Select Drive". I select "C".
Then I get the box that says "Disk cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free on C. This may take a few minutes to compute." At the bottom of the box it says "Compress old files"
I let it sit the other day for almost 15 minutes and it didn't do a Damn thing. The PC wasn't even thinking....

try killing everthing that starts up at boot - basically do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and kill everything but EXPLORER and SYSTRAY. Then try running it. If that doesn't work, I would guess the app got corrupted somehow, and you can either reinstall Windows or buy Norton's Systemworks and use their diskcleanup tools (which work better IMO).
Try killing everything forst, something running may be preventing it from working.

Both of mine do the same thing. I thought it was messed up also, but, eventually it kicks in and starts...Norton system works cuts all that bullshit out of the way :thumbs-up:

can't she uninstall and then reinstall just the disk cleanup utility? i think under add/remove programs and in the windows setup section. maybe that will uncorrupt it.

I know you said to control-alt-delete, but when I do that, the only thing that comes up under applications is IB::Toic:  isk Cleanup (blah blah blah). If I pick the Processes tab, I get a ton of stuff, but still no systray or explorer.
The stupid computer is only about 2 months old. :-(

When you ran msconfig. and got rid of stuff from the task bar did you get rid of those two things?

Nope. The few things I disabled I was SURE were unimportant (date minder, ink monitor, etc). I know enough not to get rid of stuff like that. I ended up enabling everything again anyway though.

Yes, yes I have. And I tried the other suggestion of just letting it go and eventually it'll kick in. I let it sit there for 50 minutes and nothing. I didn't have these problems with my old slow PC.
