Considering that you work in the financial world, using the affirmative defense that you don't pay attention to your money sounds like a very counterproductive idea.
Tell them that the BIG BOSS paid you off because you helped him out of a compromising position with a midget, a tranny and a pit bull.

It also depends on what kind of boss you have, my current boss I admited it to him, my past employers I woulda never told them. Depends on if you wanna stay, if you like it there, etc also depends on how to approach it. In the end is the money you "owe" worth the trouble? If your boss is reasonable which by the way he tried to blame you, seems like he isn't, then you two could compromise. Sure the mistake was made but look at it from the other side, it's a simple issue of ethics. You didnt know, they didnt know and now you both know. If you were in their place would you expect your money back? In all honesty I would but i'd also consider the 50/50 split since it was a glitch on their side.

My company overpaid me for a few weeks without me noticing (because of direct deposit)and when I told them they basically told me to keep it.
I guess it's the integrity value.

1. Keyser. Hedge funds are my clients. Not all of them are pompous assholes. But I guess the ones who are 27 and making millions a year get like that. I've never heard of this main guy or his fund.
2. After Sleeper's initial reaction (before getting sucked into the greed) he was the first person who said simply "give it back" of all the people I've talked to since this happened.
It came out Tuesday afternoon, and yes I was really surprised by my boss, who is only a boss because he's real good at his job. He's horrible at being a manager in that he can't communicate and gets very combative upon any type of disagreement.
Nonethless, I wrote a check for 100% of the amount (after tax) the next day. The HR lady tried to be open to negotiations of how I was to repay them, I said I can just write a check immediately. She was surprised. It's not my money. I didn't earn it. And if twas $50,000 or $500, I'd still have the same reaction.
I however, really don't like the way they handled this making it seem like I'm the bad guy that I didn't catch their fuckup or how my boss openly assumed that I was trying to steal from the company.
I don't think I can work for him anymore.

if his salary is $1000 over 5 months. But he actually gets paid $1400 over 5 months. That's 40% more over those 5 months.

when did keyser say anything about 40% relative to a year. you are using a completely arbitrary timeframe.

I was overpaid by 50% for 5 months.
And you implied when you said "what is there to handle" that I should just pay the money back. I was giving you credit.

it was more of a question because I don't know whether your company can force you to give the money back or not. I'm no beacon of morality.
