I don't think that it is a coincidence, that this all happened on the same day.

I just read an alert that came across from my Web crawler that WNEW has announced it is going to be switching it's format immediately to Radio Free Ukaraine effective at 3PM today.

From the Chicks Web Site:Thanks for caring enough to check in here for the news. This is the truth behind our situation, and any other version that you may, or may not hear, will not be the truth.

We will no longer be at WNEW. The management has made a decision to move the line-up around and favor some lower-rated, less popular shows over ours. We were told the following by the General Manager, that our ratings are, again, and always have been strong. We've been the second best performing show on the station, after Opie and Anthony, and that we've been the "only other show that has worked" on the station outside of O & A, as well. That we've proven we can build an audience from nothing, not once, but twice and we've shown that our listeners will follow us, even to a more competitive time slot. However, other, for lack of a better word, "political" considerations are taking precedence over performance. A chain of events was set in motion a while ago, and for reasons having nothing to do with us, or our performance, we were to be the sacrificial lamb.

Frankly speaking, I was grateful the GM was at least being honest with us, instead of trying to concoct some bullsh** reason to justify their decision.

A lot of people are trying to contact Joel at Savethechick.com to organize another Save the Chick campaign. As grateful as we were to you the last time for your massive outpouring of love and effort, we don't want to be saved.

Working at WNEW has been like building a house on a fault line. You never know when the earthquake will come and destroy your hard work. We'd rather put all efforts, yours and ours, to finding a new home for the show in New York. At that time, we hope you'll once again be part of our "family", and spread the word about the show.

Butch, Chuck and I have loved doing this show with you, and for you, everyday. You have been so responsive, funny, and loyal, and we thank you. We hope to be doing it again with you soon.

With love,
Leslie Gold

My only question is why does a line-up change require Opie and Anthony to be off today? And if they were taking this day off for some other reason, why didnt they say see ya Monday yesterday? Opie and Anthony's shift isnt moving. I dont see why they gotta take a vacation day (Friday is usually a good show too, damn).

They are taking a vacation day b/c they finally signed their contracts. Up till now, they've been working straight thru to not screw anything up. Now that the ink is dry on the contract, they will take some time off when necessary. deeks

I'm sure the fact that they partied hard core for Ben's birthday last night added to the decision to take a 3 day weekend.

This has nothing to do with O&A being off, but it seems like the appropriate spot...this is from the NYRMB

The Dentist has spoken

quote:

Do you want to know what has changed almost everything at WNEW? It’s not the ratings… they’re about the same as they’ve been for the last year. It’s not Leslie Gold getting any worse or better. It’s not Ron and Fez’s good or bad performance. It’s not Don and Mike doing poorly.

What changed everything at WNEW is Opie and Anthony’s new contract. The ripple effect of that is why Leslie Gold is now out, why Ron and Fez can now go to evenings and why Don and Mike will go to middays. Here’s why:

Up until O&A’s new contract, Don and Mike considered themselves Infinity’s afternoon syndication property positioned to bookend to Howard Stern in mornings. While no one will ever confirm this, my suspicion is that there was a “gentleman’s agreement” that D&M would ultimately end up in afternoons at WNEW. Such a move to PM Drive in New York would then have been the catalyst to get them into other syndicated markets around the country. What fouled up that scenario was Opie and Anthony’s huge success here. There was no way GM Ken Stevens (or PD Jeremy Coleman) could move O&A. That left Don and Mike stranded in nights on tape delay in New York… a bad daypart for them and one that obviously wasn’t working.

Such was the situation for over a year… and then it got even worse for Don and Mike. Opie and Anthony got that new contract… one that guaranteed they would get syndicated into big markets all over the country. That development, in effect, bounced Don and Mike from the “Infinity East Coast PM Drive Syndication Throne”. Not only were they still stuck at night in New York but also their prospects for syndication in other markets were reduced to almost zero.

That left them with two choices. Accept their PM Drive syndication fate and be satisfied with success as a local only Washington D.C. show… or… change dayparts. It’s now clear that they determined that changing dayparts was the better choice. From their point of view, it does make some sense. Infinity will likely try and promote this entire “Extreme Talk” format to stations across the country as a package. Stern is a proven winner in AM Drive. O&A are yet to be proven in syndication… but… if they pull it off, any show sandwiched in between these two will be sitting pretty. This midday move is a “Hail Mary pass” from Don and Mike. They’re down but not out thanks to O&A so they’re now making a play.

What does all this have to do with WNEW? It allows Ken Stevens and Jeremy Coleman to move Don and Mike to middays… and that changes everything because WNEW can finally do the obvious: Put Ron and Fez on at night. I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet who believes that is not the daypart for that show. It also forces Leslie Gold out. She commented today “for lack of a better word, "political" considerations are taking precedence over performance. A chain of events was set in motion a while ago, and for reasons having nothing to do with us, or our performance, we were to be the sacrificial lamb.”

Outside of morning drive, Don and Mike have been the biggest problem imaginable for WNEW. Obviously they have some kind of arrangement with Stevens to keep their show on WNEW. Since they couldn’t do afternoons, Stevens had to stick them at night. That prevented WNEW from properly programming that daypart… and that forced Ron and Fez to middays. As result, both evenings and middays have been greatly under performing. That may now change… finally.

One last point: Don and Mike failed in evenings in New York City. All the hype and all the spin that they and WNEW kept putting out about how this show was supposedly doing well here was baloney. That said, give Don and Mike credit. They’re rolling the dice. If they don’t get decent numbers in middays in New York, they’re done here… and probably have no realistic shot at a long-term syndication deal. This is a courageous move on their part. It risks their success in D.C. in order to try and succeed in a market that is now openly hostile to them. I have been a critic of this show but I salute them for throwing a “Hail Mary” with this move. I’m not optimistic that they’ll succeed in middays.

And why did all this happen? Opie and Anthony landed that new contract which included syndication. This is all ripple effect. It’s better than a soap opera. Stay tuned.

That was actually a solid commentary by the rock and roll dentist.

I definately admire Don and Mike's move. It dosent matter if you like them or not, they are making a ballsy career move and you have to at least acknowledge and respect that.

As I've said in the past , I gave D&M a chance and I didnt like the show. I used to listen to the Radio Chick but Stoped listing when they talkd about the same thing day in and Day out. I love Ron and Fez, They need a REAL producer (not some kid). When they first started I didnt like the whole Internet show but when they started to do there own thing I fell in love with there show. I still think they lost something with the move to middays, I would not mind them on at 7 to 11.

Im Glad the chick is gone again and I wont listen to Don and Mike.

Oh yea!

Sorry to post two in a row, but.

I have to admit my ignorance on this common radio term.
What exactly is a "standards" format?
Does it just mean top 40/popular music?

Someone enlighten me.

If you "revert" back to January, (when O&A were off air briefly, Rick was "fired", and D&M left air for a week", D&M said they wanted to be in NY live, and that they wanted O&A syndicated to DC live; they didn't care who went to middays. Of course we know they wanted pm drive, but O&A had the ratings. This would confirm rumor that Ken Stevens promissed D&M that they would be live in NY within a year.

This is good for O&A nationwide, clearing pm drive for them in more markets.

Personally, I don't like D&M; It means more music at work, and R&F if I listen at home or after work. I won't be able to do the "3-hr tour", but their show IS more of a night show; maybe we'll see more AFRO shows.

Actually, standards = Frank Sinatra
Classical = Beethoven
Oldies = Elvis (although Oldies stations now play some 70's rock now) :)

O&A might be meeting attorneys to make sure the contract does not have any hidden clauses. Perhaps the morning meetings were so ponderous that the boys decided to make themselves feel better by going to one of Anthony's divorce-court hearings.

I hope they aren't taking a page out of Stern's Book. As a former fan of his I used to like hearing... "This is 'insert celebrity name and voice' and you are listening to the best of Howard Stern!" I used to like the usual ad lib that followed. Now I know O&A want to play all the old stuff for the new listeners in other cities but I hope they don't forget to let the NY audience know when they are taking the day off in advance as they have done in the past.

I am a law student student in Washington, DC (in NYC for the summer) who is a big O&A fan (gotta love SU). In DC, when I can't listen to the guys on SU I am forced to listen to D&M. Put simply, they blow. It would be one thing if they were a kindler, gentler, yet still-funny show (like Brian Regan). But they suck. They are for DC/Virginia/Maryland yokels who are happy with simple, boring talk and 'comedy.' They will DEFINITELY fail in NYC no matter what time slot they have, simply because--and this is pretentious, I know--New Yorkers' tastes are more sophisticated. We need more. We demand more. Like O&A. I give them credit for trying, but WNEW should dump them as soon as they can.
