I’m sure most of you that know me understand that my reference to you as kids is done in a gesture of admiration and respect to the younger generation members of this board. This thread is intended as commentary for my “Dutch Uncle” thoughts to you all.

Over the past several months we have from time to time shared friendly thoughts and shot some well intended barbs back and forth on various references to historical situations and viewpoints of various generations.

As many of you know, I am the “old man” around here and have seen many moments that have defined and molded the psyche of our nation. I have witnessed Vietnam, Kent State, Assassinations of a president and spiritual leaders and many frightening events in our nations history. However, nothing, and I mean NOTHING has happened that is as violent, cold blooded and a direct attack on our way of life as the events of the last several days.

I have joked about your generations complacency, lack of convictions and non-existing feelings of patriotism.

Your generation is about to be called upon to shape the face of freedom, not only for NYC, or our country, but for free loving people the world over. Is this WWIII? Only time will tell, but take it from this “old man” (damn I hate that term), it probably is. We will be attacking, occupying and forcing countries in far away places to change their values or be eliminated from the face of the earth.

Your generation is going to be called upon to defeat evil, as your grandparents generation was. You will be fighting for and dying for the basic concepts and ideals of defending freedom, not only for the US but for the world. This will not be a send a few missiles and warplanes effort to see if they conform. This will be an all out, resolve the situation war, across many countries, and many religious ideals. It will become the next chapter of the “new world order”.

So as I have started other history related threads, I am curious to your thoughts about your generations efforts to shape history, instead of understanding it. And what are your feelings of what is about to be asked of you?

I'm 22...I'm a woman...I'm medically unable to fight....but give me something, anything to do for my country and I will do it. Before any of this happened when people asked me what I was, I said "I am American, I was born here so I am nothing but an American." If they allow me to fight and I die for this country, then drape and American flag over my casket and know I died trying to defend the freedoms that my forefathers created over 200 years ago.

This scenario is something I have thought about since I was young. I have long been nervous about my generation taking the reigns in just such a situation. However I never thought it would be under these circumstances. Seeing the way this country reacted young and old, made me proud to be an American and made me put my trust back in my Brothers across the nation. It made me realize that even though we grew up in a different set of ideals and circumstances, that we can show our patriotism just as our fathers before us.

I am proud to be an American and will do whatever necessary to protect this great nation of ours. If it means that I have to pick up a rifle and go to some far off land and die, I am willing to do that. If it means building bombs and tanks in factories, I will do that as well. Whatever it takes to give us back our freedom and rid the world of terrorism. I WILL NOT BE AFRAID IN MY OWN HOME!

I ask you now OAS. Put your trust in us. We have been waiting for a cause to show our true patriotism for our whole lives. Now we have it.

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up next to you
And defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land

True indeed. To bad it takes an act of terrorism to bring it out of most of us. Most of the time folks only show patriotism during the Olympics.

If called upon I'd do anything for this country. No question.

I'm not a fighter. I'm a pussy. I'm a coward. I'll admit it. On the other hand if I could make propaganda films to show my support, I would.

I'm not saying NO ONE would watcth it, I'm just saying that more people probably cared about Survivor than the Olympics. Seriously, more people probably know who won Survivor than know who won the gold medal in the Olympics, what events America won the gold medal in or even how many medals we won.

I'm not a kid or an old man just yet, and am already in the guard so when the call comes I'm there. Know one wants to put themselves in danger that may leave their children fatherless but a time comes when you do what has to be done. Its a job that I don't look forward to, But it needs to be done.

Well O&Aswallow - my family lost family storming the beaches of Normandy. They gave up their lives in the cause of Freedom - I am willing to join them and continue our family's legacy.

If I happen to go down in this cause, I hope future generations of my family will remember/honor me with the same regards as those who proceeded me

If it comes down to a great national call for enlistment, I'm not going to just sit on my ass at home and wait, while the men of our country, and most of my close friends, fight this out. I'll be there alongside them, if I can't directly fight just because I am a woman, I will find some way in which to serve my country.

It is so ironic that this has fallen into the hands of my generation of self-absorbed complacenct people...we all thought that nothing we could ever do would make a difference in the world...Here is our chance to be great.

If needed, I would go out there and fight for what we believe in, freedom. Plain and simple.

Swallow, you are right. Most of the people that will be doing the fighting will be less than 23 years old or, and most will prolly be 18-20, way younger than me. I will do what I can to help, because this is our way of life and the way of life of our children and our childrens children.

Yes, that's much younger then me as well, but I will still enlist, even if it's only to cook, or clean toilets....doesn't matter.

My late grandfather landed in Normandy on D+1, DDay was his 24th birthday. He spent nearly a year in Europe as a Sargeant. He was a machine gunner at the capture of the Ludendorff Railway Bridge that got the American army across the Rhine at Remagen. He received a bronze star and numerous other decorations for his service. We never got along, in the opinion of our family, he never got out of the war. But it would be an insult to my family's tradition, to his memory, to the memory and spirit of past American soldiers if I did not give my full service should I be called upon.

Only now am I learning what it really means to be an American. I was never patriotic... I never even completely grasped the significance of the Pledge of Allegiance or the Star Spangled Banner or anything like that. To me they were just a bunch of words that I was forced to say every morning or before sporting events. Now they are so much more than that to me. Now when I stand up every morning and proclaim my patriotism my eyes fill with tears because I realize the true meaning of the words and the significance that they hold. It's so sad that it had to take such a catastrophic event as this for me to realize how great my country really is. In the past few days I have obtained a true love for America. And while I'm scared to death right now, if I had the chance to stand on the front lines of battle to defend my country I would take that opportunity in a heartbeat. Both of my grandfathers served in WW2 in major ways. They, along with everyone else who was involved in past wars, left whatever lives they had going for the sake of future generations. Now it's our turn to step up and change this world but unfortunately I can't help in the way I'd like to. Since I'm only fifteen, there isn't much I can do but I will find someway to help. I don't know yet in what way I'll help but I know I won't be sitting not doing anything while a war goes on around me.

oas while I am not quite as old as you are, hell who is, I am one of the older members of the board. I always said that I would never fight for this goverment unless we were attacked on our own shores. well now is time to put up or shut up...I love my country and it's people immensely and I feel our values and ideals are worth fighting for....so god bless any of us who get called up or enlist....

Listen to the President. This conflict, once we begin to strike back, oculd take YEARS before it is over. This will not be a conventional war by any means. It will be fought all over the world, including our backyard. And, everyone of us will be able to contribute in some way.

Our military (army, navy, airforce, marines) will be called on to fight oversees in the home of our enemy.

Here at home, the national guard, the coast guard, the police, and all uniformed people will for the first time be called on to protect our citizens from a foreign invader. We have to recognise that our enemies retaliation will be HERE in our country.

And, while our men and women in EVERY uniform are working to keep us safe, everyone else will be needed to support them domestically by keeping the nation running strong and by producing all the things these people will need to do their duty.

The coming conflict will be ugly and it will be a test of our will and determination, but it is a test we will pass. The same spirit that carried us through the passed days will carry us to victory.

I have every confidence in our generation to rise to the occassion, and I will be right there with them in any capacity needed.

There is no doubt in my mind that the people that will be called upon will fight with honor for this country and for the people that suffered any type of loss from this terrible tradgedy, and when it's all said and done it will be America that gets the last word. I do not want to die, I love living on this earth (more specifically THIS COUNTRY!)but I have no problem putting my life on the line for the sake of this country's future. I will admit that I have done more than my fair share of complaining about different things that go on here, but when it comes down to it I have gotten so much from this country and am willing to give back.

There's no question in my mind that I would fight if called upon. I think someone made a good point when they said the enemie's retalitaion will be here. The question in my mind is, are we ready for the possibility of perhaps millions of Americans dying both overseas and at home? If we do invade another country, I have no doubt that there will be numerous terrorist attacks against us. Who knows how many civilians will perish in the coming years? Regardless, I believe we will emerge the winners, and no one will have died in vain.
