| Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70  | I have had alot of members come to me of late saying how this board is on it's final legs. People are saying this place is lamer than talking to your mother. We have had a mass exodus of vets leaving and starting their own rinky dink sites and we even have Mods raping and pillaging our site for there membership. I personally only see the same rehashed, corny bullshit being posted or just another tired topic. Sure, I am gulity of not starting to many threads, but, I never did actually. Now this may look like I am ripping Kid off, but, I think not. I am not asking anyone to come up with ways to save this place. I am asking what do you think is wrong. What bothers you and deters you from posting? What makes you want/need to post somewhere else rather than here? I am genuinely asking our members this question. Do not fear any reprecussions or bannings from what you post here. As long as it is a valid point and it is not someone trying to be an ass, there will be absolutly no reprecussions for you voicing your opinion here and it stays here as well.  | ||||

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | I was always bothered by the fact that we are on a constant crusade to join new members, yet hardly a eyebrow is raised when a Vet leaves. I understand how in order to survive as a board, we need new blood, but i dont come to OA.com to school the endless horde of newbies. I come here to converse with the people i know and have grown accustomed to. Everyday now it seems like vets are leaving, or drastically reducing posting. But no one says shit. What happened to all the greats? Snuka, CBH, and the like? You can tell these guys are missed, because everytime one of them posts every few months, it becomes a orgy of old memories. We need to worry about our current state before we can get more people. I know i have alot of friends i met thru this site that have left due to various reasons (personal gripes, simple boredom, and the everlasting river of board drama) and it makes me sad. Im not saying close registration or anything, i admit we do need the newbies, but this hunt for new members shouldnt take priority. You cant make everyone happy all the time, but if something isnt working, you have to examine your methods. And with everyone leaving, is more newbies what we really need?

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I think tolerating newbies is fine. People are going to leave, people are going to come in. It's the nature of a board. But yeah, something's wrong. Every newbie is met with "go get adopted". If this is just the blanket response as it has become, is it really any different or better than "Dillon!"? When someone comes in, they don't know the board's history. They don't know what they would have been in for in November and December of last year. All they see is their post, good or bad, is met with a horde of "GO GET ADOPTED, RIGHT NOW!!!" - to someone that's new, and doesn't know why adoption was set up, or maybe didn't even see that there was an adoption thread so they think they're just being tooled on anyway..... fuck, you might as well just say "Dillon!"... Another thing that just irks me is thread quality. IS IS NOT NECESSARY TO POST EVERY NEWS STORY YOU FIND ONLINE. It's usually a waste of your time, not to mention the time of the poor souls who think it might be a good idea to click your thread. Sean - great post, dude. This board is slowing down to a crawl when months ago you could barely keep up with it. I highly doubt that any other "spinoff" board is going to get up to the caliber that OA.com has... we've created a real community here. A place where a lot of people, myself included, come to escape the world for a while.... a meeting place to hang out with people I am DAMN PROUD to call friends. But when more people leave than come in, then yeah, you've got to think something's wrong. Some newbies get hooked and become regulars.... but too many decide they hate the place and leave. And what happened to O&A themselves? Ant used to post somewhat regularly. The board was mentioned almost DAILY on the show. Going nicey-nice slowed it down.... and right now I can't even REMEMBER the last time it was mentioned.... I don't know.... I really don't have all the answers.... but that's what this thread is for - a Town Hall meeting. The more problems that are voiced, the more we'll know about how to fix it. | O&A Board Regular Registered: May. 00 | I must agree, this place has calmed down a bit from last year. Maybe we should start to have a lot more board outings or maybe not. I don't know. Obviously there is no doubt sept 11th also changed the vibe of the board. Although now I feel engaged to talk on this board more often again, some people may not. We shouldn't worry about the vets who have left us. They made great contributions here and if they must attend to personal matters so be it. In their place new "veterans" will rise. Yes they won't be of the same cailber of the past ones, but they will have a vibe of their own.

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | personally, i dont think that you should be asking US what the problems are, because if we didnt like it here anymore, we would leave. mods/people with influence should talk to their old friends who left here, and see why. maybe it might be the cliquishness, or nicey nice policy, or the other things people usually comment on, but most of them probably have a good reason that most of us cant see. talk to the departed, see why they left, and get some good insight on this place. even banned members who used to be big(guys like jmb) might have a good perspective since they're outside, looking in. also, we've kinda lost publicity. like ftl said, we used to mentioned at least once a week, with the bang party scandal, ant joining, the boys having the feature of "oa.com screename of the day" for a little while, or other things. i was forced off the net in January, and when i was let back on, i didnt think to come back here. i was only online on weekends, and the board was put in the back of my mind since i didnt have any friends here(hell, does anybody rember i was here before april?). but then some people from the board came on the show in april(gooch and njdude i think...i forget now), and it made me think of the funny stuff i saw here, the people, and how i still remembered some things, like this person's old sig, or thats guy's status, and it made me want to come back. other people probably have similar stories, but oa.com hasnt been majorly mentioned since then, the vets dont come back, and the really good new people, guys who could be the next cbh or fez, dont find this place. also, tone down on the news like the others are saying.do we really need to know about the new type of cheese that never goes bad, or what new great product is about to come out, or the wacky story that every radio show(including o&a) will read on the air we need to cut down on the cliquishness.ignore the factions, cause those are just jokes put into statuses, basically.i mean, most factions dont really affect the board after a few weeks, so leave them be, but stop the cliques.some are big, well known, like the slackers, but others are small and hidden, but both kinds do the same thing.they alienate people, form a bit of a smaller closed society.there are people who stay in certain threads or areas of the board(most SU guys are never seen out of there), and they make it seem different, like a whole new place.a guy who may be incredibly respected in the general board means shit there, and their high ups are nothings here.its like a different place. we've got to stop turning old members into jokes.gonzo mentioned this in chat once after kid left in july, and i agree with it.a lot of vets have lots of freinds, leave, and then they turn into a joke.it did happen with kid for awhile, its happened to fingerbang and bn(i'm not defending their actions.they're just some of the easier people to think of that this happens to and are easir to have examples on), and its going on with corpse now.they all turn into running jokes, and any good they may have done is GONE, forgotten because of "ha ha...astrology forum" or "if you need somebody to talk to, i'm here for you".respect the memory of the good, not the bad.i'm not saying bn and fingerbang were great guys, but corpse was a mod, which means he had to do some good, and kid had(and has now that he's back) tons of freinds and for all his rule breaking, did TONS to make the board what it is now.dont let a member's bad actions outshine the good and to comment briefly on what other people have said(not ripping on you. just commenting)...

Aside from that, sayhing to every newbie "get adopted." and shit like that. Yes we're a big board but there's no reason people shouldn't be allowed to explore. wade in shallow waters before getting into the deep end. Let them understand. The sort of monotony of the board. nothing new happens. I don't know if this makes sense but for some reason OA.com feels like more of an office environment. It's like a job of sorts not that I don't enjoy it but i can't explain it more. maybe it's the white background but it seems as if it's more ... i don't know. And while this isn't somethign that bothers me it's the best way to understand but anyone ever try comparing OA.com and RF.net. As a regular on both boards, RF.net has a more friendly, fun atmosphere. People are allowed to fuck around, newbies aren't berated for being newbies. Hell it seems like you need at least 1.5 thousand posts on OA.com before you're 'accepted' while if you look at RF.net people with less than 50 posts are like regulars. I don't know if that makes sense but it does to me. That being said, i can't think of anything to change. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | vinny...i can't believe that you haven't realized by now, but the more you bitch, the worse its gonna get. just be quiet and deal. I remember when i first joined the board, if something wasn't posted in GD, it usually didn't get read. 95% of the conversation on the board was about the show, with a bunch of sigpics being done based on what was going on that day. these days, the show is rarely talked about. Most things are posted in off topic, and the O&A show gets a few topics during show hours with a couple posts each. That to me, more than anything, is the reason that we're not getting mentioned on the show anymore, because we kinda stopped talking about it. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing for the board, but its obvious that fewer good posters are signing up, which is probably because we aren't getting any mentions on-air. I completely agree with FTL, some people are turning this board into a news-wire. I know where cnn.com is, i know how to get stories from AP, there is no reason to post them here unless they are particularly interesting and could cause a good discussion. you look on the first page of Off Topic and you see like 10 posts that are just cut and paste from some news site. I still enjoy myself here, for the most part anyway, and thats why i still am here. these are just my observations from the last few months. You just can't post EVERY single news story out there. That's what newspapers are for. You know I think we have too many members and fourms. I think it kinda intimidates newbies. In order to have newbies posting well and making sure they know the rules I think the FAQ in a abbreviated form should automatically show up in their first couple of posts or so. I don't know about you guys, but some newbies may be confused and overwhelmed to know where the FAQ is, let alone what the word FAQ MEANS.

Because they were there before. Because they're funnier, or have a better reputation. And guess what.... they're destroying themselves. So many people on the board now just post the first thing that pops into their heads. I've been on the board about a year now, and the difference I saw between back then and when I came back from a 3 month break is huge. Obviously some things had to change, but instead of finding a middle ground between being "nicey nice" and Upu-style bashings, it's swung completely towards the former. Of course I understand the need to not pointlessly bash every new person who posts a repetitive or stupid thread, but when it keeps happening and you have quality, intelligent posters leaving because of it, maybe a semi-return to the old ways might help.  ---------- Thanks to Slash for digging this out... | ||||

This is merely a suggestion or six. 1. Don't ever mention your status again. Don't ever mention anyone else's status again. As a matter of fact, you probably shouldn't ever write the word "status" again. I know it bothers you, so what? Have you seen some of the other statuses? Some of the statuses of people who have been on the board for years? Some of the statuses of people who are BEST friends with the people who make the statuses? Ignore it, get past it. No one noticed your status until you started bitching about it. And when will you realize that the more you bitch about your status the worse it will get. Just bite your tongue and ignore the fact that you even have a status. Don't respond to questions about your status. Don't talk to you parents about your status, and don't have dreams of a different status. For the love of Christ, just drop the fucking subject! 2. Calm down a bit in your posts. You are very polar. Your posts oven have a lot of venom in them and that makes you stick out. If you stick out, you are a target. If you are thin skinned (which you most certainly are) you don't to stick out. Just go with the flow, make some jokes, observations, obscure references, and you will do fine. When people get comfortable with you, it will be easier on you. 3. Quit being such a baby. This isn't a Dr. Laura messageboard. People aren't going to hug you and treat you like their favorite stuffed unicorn. Look at the environment of the show. People make fun of each other. Don't take it personal. Becuase if you do, IT WILL BECOME PERSONAL. You obviously haven't mastered the art of the comeback yet. Everytime anyone pokes fun at you, you erupt like a 4 year old. If you like the show and want to continue using the messageboard, being able to handle insults and jabs is the most imporant thing about you must learn (other than you must love the Froy, don't fuck with Kid Africa, and Rape Fantasizer has nice tits) 4. Learn that no one gives a shit about you. That's not a bad thing. No one cares that you are 16, no one cares that you like Pantera. No one cares about anything you say, do, or think right now, until you earn their respect. And you aren't going to earn any respect pissing and moaning about a friggin status. You will only create more animosity and more people will enjoy making fun of you becuase it so incredibly upsets you. 5. Somewhere mention the name "Asscunt" in your name, signature, or every post. Why? Becuase it's a real funny word. Plus it is a name that was annointed you by the Great psycho Anthony, and that is a plus. 6. This is vague, but in short, don't be a dick, moron, tool, or perform any other stupid action which your instincts may spur you to perform. Before you write anything ask yourself this question, "Will people make fun of me for this post?" If you answer "no", but they do anyways, then refer to #3. Again, I have no power, no official voice in the community, no support from anyone, or idea if everyone is going to swarm me like a rugby scrum becuase I posted this. However, I can guess that if you follow each and every suggestion that I have written here (plus any other that veterans might add) for a full 365 days, your status will change. I think I joined when this place was on the trail end of its prime... and declined to what it is. I don't know what it is, I don't know why.... but I just have this gut feeling that it aint the same. Perhaps it's lost its luster.... perhaps it has gotten tired. I haven't had the urge to make funny ass sigs.... I have been waiting to become inspired, but it just hasn't come. I don't know... maybe a lot of us have been here so long that it's just gotten old. No rhyme... no reason.... that shit happens. That having been said, I still have no intention of leaving. Love this place too much to just let it go.

Now I am gonna bring up many points so please, skim through it all and don't just skim over it cause the post is long. **Edit, I redid this post, breaking this up into two seperate posts so the post following this one is not a double post but a continuation for an easier read. First off we can all agree the board has slowed down. I will not go into the usual Gonzo history lesson on how great things used to be, most of us already know all that jazz, But let us discuss a wide array of topics that have contributed in the decline of this board. To pinpont how it all began is hard to come up with off the top of my head so let's just pick a topic. I agree adoption is good but also bad at the same time. I do not feel it is the adoption program itself neccesarily, because you volunteer to be an adopter no one forces you. It is more people taking a stance of authority in demanding people get adopted. Modding off has always been a problem. Now I am not defending myself here but I must say the following. I consider myself a very fair person, in all my time as moderator I have only banned less than a dozen people, granted i banned mavric 20 times. But all my bannings are mostly spammers. I will always here everyones point of view out and maybe because I have a gift of intelligence to debate I will gladfully have a friendly argument with anyone. I have also never let my modposition go to my head, I am the same sick fuck I have always been. I may have fun with it at times but never will I feel i deserve anything due to what I am, but more of who I am. I paid my dues here for a very long time. Only a handful of members know what I put up with and how much I gave to get where I am. What is the point of this? I fought for this place through everything, because I felt it was worth fighting for. Plus the fighting made things exciting. This whole gentler kinder board is a bunch of bullshit. What was this boards hey day? The bang party days. The days when sean did his manifestos, I did my fucked up threads, Upuauat wreaked havoc and people who could contribute did so. People may have not liked what was going on but it gave you a stimule to come here to see what was going on. I agree the news threads need to go. This place was rocking because it was all about members and internal board shit not what was going on in the outside. Now granted we need outside news to have topics but to post every little update is not neccesary. Barring the 9/11 stuff but even with that not every tid bit of news needs to be posted. Now as far as the complaints on General Discussion coming to a stand still. Many things are to blame this is the meat of the problem. O&A since syndication has plugged this board sporadically, Ant & Roger both have completely stopped posting. For whatever reason maybe they do not care, don't wanna, or do not need the local NY & NJ advertising. That is also why all the so called "syndication members" that we thought would flood this place never came. Also the little mini OA.coms poping up. Now with wackbag granted every member on wackbag atleast their vets all 5 of them, lol. Came from OA.com there is not one member who was/is there who was not a member here. I admit even I was one of them. But atleast with the members we lost last year to wackbag, we regained them in all the new vets who came here. People like Sean, Afrika, Grumpy, Seph, Tequila, FTL, Moosen, etc etc all these people who are now Vets and contributors here all came here mostly from the plugging of O&A. But slowly the vets are once again leaving for whatever reason, granted people must and need to move on. BUT in no offense to the new members I have not seen more than a handful of members join within the last 6 months who have become or will become major contributors. There are no Afrika's or sean's coming in. The members from my era are all but gone Up, Bullnuggets, IP, Skuttle, Howie, snuka, Corpse all gone. Only people like Slash, face, Jon, and raven remain. Now onto the mini boards poping up to these people I say good for you. BUT you have not done anything but steal what others worked for. Look at your boards go ahead dragon, corpse and amy. All your members are members from here. Just like wackbag before you, you have just made a mini oa.com. Atleast amy came up with calling her board a "stalker board" But to just take the format, the forum names, and members is bullshit. Especially you corpse, you were my pal? You said you needed to move on to get your life together and you had no time for message boards? Well why did you start a board 2 days later? Do not even bother saying it is not your board but your G/F's board. Granted she designed it but she wanted a writing forum you made it a mini oa.com with all our members. Now I am not bashing you I am not saying post here or nowhere else but stop being so two faced. Why does GD on oa.com suck? Well you all know me and I am honest as hell. Blame the show mostly the General Discussion forum reflects the show and if the show is stagnant so will be the forum which discusses the show, Off topic has not slown down as much as GD has. Also look at all the mini oa.com's Look at the members who have either lost or members who no longer post as much. Also the personal business issue here about bringing so called "real life" shit here. Well that is to blame as well BUT that is also what made this place. It all started with the bang party clique and when mainly sean along with me, up, slash, kingpin, kirk, howie and others took them down and personal shit was bought out. But if the personal issue deals with board members it is ok but when you bring non-board members into it then it is bullshit. Also the whole "business" and "politicing" is also annoying. I do not want people kissing my ass i enjoy a turn in the barrel i enjoy having fun. Don't be politically correct say whay you want just do not be a dick. Bring back the arguing it was great, not as much fighting but arguing as in debating and also a little fighting never hurt. Enough politicing stop using this board as a stepping stone for other shit. Stop taking yourself so seriously if you get made fun of take it and stop being a bitch, sarcasm never works out in text cause people think to highly of themselves. Many people wonder why slash and I bust on Grk so much. The parties helped this board more than any other factor cause people got out and met eachother and it created bonds. Now I know many people do not want to come out due to tension caused by bullshit on the board. But I will lead by example as of right now I am dropping any and every grudge I hold with anyone here. Do the same, we have come here to have fun and not to create more bullshit tension in out lives. This does not mean I will be friends with people I have had problems with nor that I will even talk to them at the party but if they want to I will, wanna have a drink? I will. I want people who have stopped coming out to start coming out again. I do not want to see anymore personal bullshit on the board if it involves outside factors. If it is between two members of the board and it involves something doing with the board be my guest but no more outside bullshit. We need to stop isolating ourselves and bring ourselves back together. I also think certain admins need to reevaluate their egos and positions and stop putting down others cause you feel they are not as good as you. We are all pricks and assholes here wether you like it or not. But I love most of you for that and I wouldnt trade most of you in for anything else. I personally will set up a get together within the next couple of weeks and not WWFNY but someplace new. I want you all out there. To all the lurkers who are afriad to post here due to reprocussions, have no fear. If you dislike me say so, if you hate froy say so, if you think the show sucks cock say so, if you think a member is a douche say so. BUT only if you remain with a realm of coherent thought and with a valid statement. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Nov. 00 | I joined this board about a year ago, right when things were about to peak and I remember feeling like everyone here was best friends with one another even though no one really knew each other all that well. Everyone here had one thing in common...they all knew about a little radio show that was about to sweep through the nation. Back then everything was general discussion and people weren't posting just to get their post count up. Sig pics weren't being used here and when they finally were, people were making five new ones a day. The Gooch and CBH were stomping out Gary the Retard and Unknownsources. And if I remember correctly, posts by JeffK were highly anticipated. Back then O&A didn't acknowledge that the board exsisted, but it was still the place to be. Over time the numbers here grew. There were some great new posters but there was also a huge attitude change which was mostly directed towards these new members. People started to get together more often outside of this forum and groups started to form. One group in particular was the "in crowd". There were a lot of inside jokes and because of this even more groups formed. At the same time membership kept increasing and this social institution that we call a message board morphed into a cluster fuck. For one reason or the other the "in crowd" started migrated to other boards and a vaccuum effect took place. All of these newbies filled the void and became veteran posters but without ever really getting the chance to experience what the board was like with the "founding class". Over a period of time the style of this board changed and more people came here to talk about sports and southpark rather than O&A. Others started to focus in on Off Topic as a place to post news. Not that any of these things are wrong..but I feel that just like with everything else in life, history is the best place to look for answers. In the past I have gone to the last pages of GD and read through what it used to be like. And that will only take you back to Feb. I think that we are all looking for something to be how it used to be...when O&A were only on in NY and I had to sit at my computer from 3-7 to listen on SU...when Psycho Mark and Spaz suprised a lot of members by showing up for a get-together...when people came here to battle and got smoked. All that stuff was exciting when it was happening and the attitude on the board reflected that. Now there is syndication (I still think the show is great) and there is not as much anticipation as to what might happen next with O&A. Yes, Ant hasn't posted here lately and Opie hasn't really been plugging the site that much...again, Back in the heydey of this site O&A didn't acknowledge that the board exsisted, but it was still the place to be.
