AOL Reports Wider 3Q Net Loss

My question is to those who have AOL, but refuse to give it up. Why? Most admit that they hate it and they should give it up, but they still don't.

I have asked this question of dozens of people and received various reasons. The top 3 reasons are -

1. Fear. Fear of not knowing how to use a "real" ISP.

2. Easy email system. Even if they have cable/dsl, they pay the $10 B.Y.O.A. (Bring Your Own Access) fee for email.

3. Just simply that they are used to it and don't know about other true ISP's, whether that would be local or national.

I will be awaiting my 1 reply.

::hands Slash a cup of coffee to keep him awake while reading my response:: ;)

I have AOL because it is what I've had since I was in high school. I'm used to it, it is easy to use, and eventhough I get booted constantly, I think it has more to do with my connection than AOL itself. Since I have dialup, I don't really think another service would be THAT much better.

Look Slash... three replies....

anywho... I'm one of the moron's that have cable & AOL...why, I'll tell you... because I'm too lazy to send out a coulpe hundred e-mails with address change.... that, and because my Mother stops by once in a while to use my computer & she has a hard enough time with AOL...plus, she's pays for it, so it doesn't really cost me anything.

I had a hamburger for lunch today. Kinda greasy but it was worth it.

wha? he got his one serious reply he was waiting for. I wanted to add other value to the thread.

okay, if I have to give a serious response, I stopped using AOHell as my ISP years ago. The customer service sucks red mandrin yeast infected monkey ass. Their connection service sucks bullmoose cock (and that was when I could actually log on). I don't understand why anyone would continue using those dipshit. I've used Mindspring (now Earthlink) as my ISP for the last 7 years and I haven't had a complaint about them yet.

I'm also actually boycotting the racist, commie AO-shitstain-Hell bastards for an incident years ago.

well, now i feel obligated ;)

i'd never used aol, but a couple months ago, my mindspring account stopped working due to certain funds being maxed out. and since someone didn't feel like going through the hassle of changing the payment crap we just threw in one of those aol freebie discs. well, to be honest, i found it all incredibly annoying, so i would just dial up then minimize the window and use ie. if you ask me, aol seems like more of a pain in the ass to use than just regular internet. maybe i'm a moron, but i didn't find it very user friendly. now i'm on roadrunner which rocks, plus i also got my phonebill with a months charge for aol, $28.90??? cable is only $10 more a month, and there are plenty of other dial ups for less than $20. i don't get it.
so, what do you think would happen if i don't pay? they can't shut it off, i'm not using it anymore...

Um, I never had aol, but the times that I used it at friends houses or whatever, i just didn't like it for the way the layout is. Its probably the most inane, pointless, and ignorant reason to not like it, but, hey, whatever.

This is not about what is better, broadband or dial-up. To be fair, AOL has a broadband service as well.

This is about comparing dial-up to dial-up and/or keeping AOL if you have cable/dsl.

I can only imagine that AOL Broadband service as well as their customer service sucks as much as their dial-up service, from their past reputation.

I was shocked when I found out FoundryMusicJeff uses AOL. I was one of the first people to use AOL back when it ran on Delphi software and Compuserve was strictly text based. The days of BBS. I simply outgrew AOL since most of what I want is on the Web, IRC, or newsgroups. Most of AOL is a big fat advertisement.

AIM however rocks. At least they make something worthwhile.

Jeff, please post and explain yourself.

what is this AOL you speak of?

i, like most everyone else, used aol when just starting out because of the freebie hours and i was too lazy to try anything else. it suuuuuuuuhhhuuuuuhhhhuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhuuuuuucked. the aol browser constantly froze on certain sites and as for the connection serivce? well lets say you havent really been annoyed in life until you try and get online for 45 minutes and then when you finally do, you get a connection speed of 23000bps. that is truly the 7th layer of hell. i use mindspring(now earthlink) and i have never had any problems whatsoever.

AOL SUCKS. I have it and hate it. I have tried some other dial up services and they suck too. I can't get DSL or Cable in my area yet. It fucking is driving me crazy. I heard we should be getting something soon. My town stinks.

i still use it pretty much because of the email
i dont go on as much anymore because even though im at college theres something wrong with the network here and i get booted like every 1/2 hour.
at home i have a cable modem and still use aol there mostly because im lazy but i use aol imer to, in both places.
and it is pretty messed up though that when you go to download something from your email and it still goes extremely slow even with the cable modem.
-edit- and oh yea i got a year free when i got my new computer, so i'll probably drop it when thats over

People don't wanna give up AOL due to the fact that it's still the best place for pedos to lure children to them. Why with so many young girls and boys using it some of their parents are too dumb enough to figure out they have "parental controls".

Everyone do your self a favor and drop AOL. It's Not a real ISP

And FMJeff you happen to code 3 well known websites in the oa/rf universe, yet you still use such an inferior product! See the light and try to get broadband if availible.

(AIM is still cool though, at least we don't have to pay for it.)

I use AOL for my mail, and Optimum Online for everything else. The only reason i keep AOL Mail is their unlimited email storage and because my family is too goddamn stupid to know how to use anything else. However, all traces of AOL have been removed from all the computers (the dialer and the actual program itself). So, we check our mail thru AOL.com.

Did they change their storage policy? I thought they started deleting mail after it was 30 days old. That's another complaint I hear about AOL. However, that was last year... things may have changed.

I also heard here(in this thread) and off the board, that users of AOL don't pay for ir. That could be the reason for "AOL Reports Wider 3Q Net Loss" LOL

Okay, I admit, I use AOL because of 2 of the 3 reasons you stated. However, other than the fact that I get booted a lot, I really don't have any complaints with it. Also, I've had to call customer service a few times, and they were always very efficient and helpful. Maybe I'm just lucky. :)
