Are there any cover songs that you folks have heard that are just as good if not better than the originals?? Or any that were horrible??
Let me throw in a few examples of ones I have heard that are in either vein...
THE GOOD ONES
Metallica-Whiskey in the Jar, Turn the Page
Anthrax: Parasite
Pseudo Echo(Two hit wonders from the 80's): Did a rockin cover of Funkytown.
Slayer:In a Gadda da Vidda(Really put their stamp on a hippie classic)
THE BAD ONES:
Metallica:Any Misfits tune they covered, Last Caress, Green Hell, Die Die My Darling(No one did em better than Glenn Danzig)
Toad the Wet Sprocket: a HORRIBLE cover of Rock n Roll All Night for that KISS Tribute Album back in 94 I puked for an hour after listening to that.
STP: Dancing Days: Not too many bands can pull of Led Zeppelin, these guys proved they can't
Billy Idol:LA Woman, he tried, sounded good for a few minutes and then fell flat.
Like to hear what you guys think.

In my humble opinion...

GNR's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" blows away the original Bob Dylan version (and Clapton's version too).

As far as bad covers, Mariah Carey's "I Still Believe" has to be one of the worst I ever heard.
Sheryl Crow's "Sweet Child O' Mine" makes me cringe too.

Speaking of GnR...I got one good...one bad...
Sympathy for the Devil..1995 Interview with the Vampire Sndtrak..GOOD
Attitude...Duff can't sing so WTF is he doing trying to imitate Glenn Danzig?? Maybe he should have learned from Metallicas' mistake.

Jimi's All along the Watchtower: great, dunno if you can really blow Dylan away. String Cheese Incident's Gin and Juice is fun.
Hate those Me first and the Gimmes covers, so unoriginal

Awsome cover - "Hard to Handle" by The Black Crowes.

Most covers suck though. Its cool to do them in concert, but when you record them it usually sucks. The worst is when a band gets big because of a cover. (Limp Bizkit, Orgy, Alien Ant Farm). If you need to use someone else's song to get big, then you probably don't deserve it.

"Choices always were a problem for you. What you need is someone strong to guide you. Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow, what you need is someone strong to use you.. like me, like me. If you want to get your soul to heaven, trust in me .Don't judge or question. You are broken now, but faith can heal you. Just do everything I tell you to do. Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow. Let me lay my holy hand upon you. My Gods will becomes me. When he speaks out, he speaks through me. He has needs like I do. We both want to rape you. Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life. Open my eyes and blind me with your light and your lies." - Tool
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed - Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Al Green's "Take Me To The River" is a great song, but I give a slight edge to The Talking Heads version.

I second Man Mann's version of Springsteen's classic although it would depend on one's mood.

Any Led Zeppelin cover of an old blues tune, i.e., "I Can't Quit You Baby"

Hell yeah! That whole album (Hero, Hero) is one of my fucking favorites. Nice!

Good cover tunes include:
Pogues: Limerick Rake, And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Any cover by Phish - they always sound perfect
Max Creek - Eminence Front (Saw these guys last year at the Wetlands, was tripping, but at the time it was one of the best things EVER!)
Tori Amos - Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Heart Of Gold

Bad Covers
Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar (Sorry Turk, I hated it)
Brittney "I Love To Suck" Spears - Satisfaction, I Love Rock & Roll

buckcherry redid "anything anything" and it rocks.
i like dave matthews version of all along the watchtower
i hated billy idols version of LA woman.
and the worst remake in the history of music was Madonna's version of American Pie.

Monster Magnet's "Into the Void" is really amazing, as is Anthrax's "London" (off the Airheads sndtrk.)

Anthrax's "Ball Of Confusion" doesn't win any awards, though. Love&Rockets' did it better.

I also like Shane MacGowan & Nick Cave's "What A Wondeful World." The video is especially funny to watch - they're just sitting there blasted and hammered singing like a couple of bums - priceless.
