Awww, Slash, you did that all just for little ol' me?

I think I'm just gonna throw in the towel and buy a new printer. Looking briefly, I saw a cheap one on the Compaq site (a Lexmark Z33 color jetprinter) that's compatible with XP. I think it was like $79, which is fine for what I use it for...I don't need anything fancy. I'm assuming it will be compatible with my PC. I guess I should stop assuming, huh?

Thanks again to everyone for your help, especially Slash, Albadabing and Mickey (err, I mean, Barch). :)

Pluto,

When you finally get everything working please post an itemized list and total cost of switching from dial-up to cable.

I'd swear the comcast comercials claimed it was about $3 more a month...

btw... It's got very little to do with the sig. It's all about attitude.

Yea, I bet you would like to take that "attitude" of hers to the WOW forum. You are soooo transparent, dude! :-p

Yes, you will need to buy a new printer, Sweet. But, before buying a printer, why don't you inquire with all the fine members here that are gawking over your sig pic as to what quality, but affordable printer you should look into getting?

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

I'm not gonna deny that I'd like to see the boobies but, attitude does go a long way. Whether you've got boobies or not, this thread is a perfect example of how to ask for help.

As a matter of fact, I'd go so far as to say that maybe this thread should be referred to in the FAQ section. So all the fucktards that come to the board and post "help me now or go fuck yourself" may see why they get tooled on and why SweetAngel here gets help.

So are ya saying that we should have the FAQ include things such --

When a male member needs computer help the first thing he should do is Register as an attractive sounding female member name?

The second thing he should do is get a smoking sig pic?

Lastly, he should post as a new to all this technology stuff damsel in distress?

Okay Mickey, here's the deal so far:
Cable + modem - $29.95 + $5 (modem) per month for the 1st 3 months, then up to $39.95 plus $5 (modem).

Ethernet card - $19.99

XP upgrade - $99 (which I didn't really need)
Printer - under $100 (I hope)

Subtract $21.95/month for AOL
Subtract $14.98/month for extra phone line

Aggravation and time expended trying to get the damn thing working.....PRICELESS!

I'd say cable ends up costing WAY more than $3 more per month. :)

Well poopies to that! They appear fairly cheap, and hopefully will work okay for what I need them for (just home stuff, not work)...but I'll keep looking around.

Mickey: While they both look pretty similar, the HP seems to be slower in print speed. My current printer plugs in (as opposed to USB port), so that's a concern as well. The HP had USB, couldn't tell what the other had.

My main uses for the printer will be regular text documents and pics from my digital camera. Does that help you to pick one for me? ;)

Gee slash, would ya look at that? Who'da thought...

SweetAngel, It all depends on how much you want to spend. All you said you wanted so far was cheap. Those two are cheap. If you want to print near photo quality you might need to spend a little more.
quote:

My current printer plugs in (as opposed to USB port), so that's a concern as well.
Do you mean a parallel cable? or, some other "plug"?

Again, it all kinda depends on how much you want to pay. Printers range in cost from around $50 to well into the tens of thousands. And, as is almost always the case, the more you pay the better the quality, speed, performance, durability, etc.

I think you need to let us know how much you are willing to spend and, I'm sure we can find you the best printer for that price.

Sweet Angel, If you plan to use this printer for photos, you really wont be happy with anything but a photo printer,(unless you like seeing the lines on the photo.HP has a photo-smart printer that is real popular that sells for $199.99 everywere. If you do go that route just gotta make sure it supports xp which I think it does, but not 100% sure. I'd hate to see you spend $ and be back in the same mess. Good Luck Sweet Angel!! :)

Yeah, yeah...it plugs in. I guess it's a parallel cable...it's got big plugs on either end! LOL (okay, maybe I'm having a blonde-ish moment).

My old, cheap little IJ200 printed okay pics, so I'm not really ready to spend a ton on a photo quality printer. I just want something that prints out decently for pics and text. Doesn't have to be top of the line, because I don't have millions to spend. I guess (and this is really going out on a limb here) that I would prefer to keep it under $150.

Oh, one other question, now I find out that my Norton Antivirus has to be reinstalled (again, driver issues) -- so my PC is not protected...if I turn off the modem, will that help until I can reinstall the Norton? Or will it damage the modem?

And no, just because I have a digital camera, doesn't mean I'm gonna post my boobies! :)

Gotta leave something to the imagination ;) After all, you already know that I'm technologically challenged!

Sweet Angel......All you have to do is reinstall your Norton with the CD. There are no driver issues with this. It's not a device, just software. Do it as soon as possible so you'll be
protected from viruses. In the mean time, avoid opening emails with attachments that have .exe as the file extension. Also don't open any emails from strangers..period....Oh and if you want to email me that sig that you don't want to show online......I promise it will be our secret. Wink-

Yes, turning off the power button on your cable modem is a good idea even if you have an antivirus program running. Until you install a firewall, you're leaving your system vulnerable to evil bastards like slash. It no longer matters if you are actually using the internet or not. Whenever your computer is on and your modem is on, you are connected to the rest of the world.

If you leave your computer on for extended periods or in sleep mode. And, as I have heard from other XP users... You're able to leave your system running for weeks at a time. Turning off the power on the modem will release your IP and, keep you at least somewhat protected. (while the modem is not in use)

I'll see what I can find for ya in a decent printer for under $150...

When it comes to printers, my opinion has always been to find the best one you can afford and then get the next best model. I don’t like to buy new printers. I’d much rather spend money on fun or cool stuff. So, when I buy a printer, I expect it to last forever.

HP has been around forever and everyone knows them. They have become the standard by which other printers are measured. That being said, I very much prefer Epson's inkjet printers. They are typically faster, greater resolution and, cheaper than HP. I have no particular problem with HP... other than they seem to rely far too heavily on their reputation.

So, my selection for the best printer for your general printing needs as outlined above:

Epson Stylus Photo 820
$149.00
Visit this Website

A little slower & a little cheaper:
Epson Stylus C60
$99.00
Visit this Website

If you insist on HP this would be my first choice:
HP DeskJet 940c
$149.99
Visit this Website

A little slower & a little cheaper:
hp Deskjet 920c
$99.99
Visit this Website

All 4 printers are XP compatible (all necessary drivers are packaged with printer) and are both USB & Parallel connectable. I am aware that Windows XP is not listed in this sellers specs but, I checked with Epson and they do support XP.

You’ll note that all 4 links are to the same store. This was more for comparison purposes than price. These particular printers can be found in almost any store that sells printers.

Good Luck.

Slash is right on the money with Pricewatch. That's an excellent site for pricing many computer parts and peripherals.

What you can also do to get a good deal on a printer is pricematch it. For example, Staples has the HP 920c for $99.98. Pricewatch shows (for the moment) the same printer at some online store in NJ for $89. Go to that store's site, print the page, take it to Staples. You get a 110% pricematch guarantee - so you'll het the printer for about $88. Sure it's only $10, but that's $10 that could be going towards more SmartMedia cards for your camera :-D. This is also how I got my Photoprinter (HP1115) for $40 less than what they were charging.

EDIT : I guess I have Barch on my mind today - but it's fixed now. Hope my lover isn't too pissed at me.....
