After watching ABC's coverage of the Ireland vs. Cameroon game, comparing it with the other three I've seen live, my opinion is this: Games with a veteran English commentator = more gooder. Having both of them American isn't as good.

Edit: Anybody think it's ridiculous that the best game of the finals so far, England vs. Sweden, isn't live at all, except on the internet? A little selfish on the part of ABC, perhaps?

Wait, American sport fans that sit on their asses for HOURS on Saturdays and Sundays watching baseball, golf and NASCAR are going to criticize soccer?

Soccer = athleticism + skill

Baseball, golf and NASCAR are games that 250 pound losers regularly excel at.

Hockey and Football are better than soccer. Fights in soccer are like Tai-Chi, that's the worst part of soccer...

Not true. Hockey and football are different from soccer not better. I happen to be able to enjoy almost all sports and appreciate the differences.

Great game with Japan vs. Belgium. Japan showed it came to play, and almost pulled out a win. Wouldn't be surprised to see them place at least second in group H.

Edit: Since Richmond, VA, doesn't contain a huge Hispanic population, AT&T's cable doesn't have Univision. For once I now wish a bunch of them lived down here.

That can't be good for the US that Korea is
playing so well (which is to be expected since
the home team always does well). I really
can't see the US doing much against any of
these teams unless Poland struggles

Okay, here is my opinion on Group D, partly based on fact. Although Portugal won group two, here are their match results. Mind you, this group contained them, Rep. Ireland, THE NETHERLANDS (sorry, my team), Estonia, Cyprus, and Andorra. The last three nations have never played in a World Cup Finals match. In the last international competition with the these teams, Euro 2000, Andorra lost all ten qualifying games, Cyprus placed fourth of fifth in its qualifying, Estonia placed third and didn't qualify. Ireland lost to Turkey on aggregate goals, but Portugal, winning group A, lost 2-1 in the Semi-finals to the eventual winners of Euro 2000, France.

In the qualifying draw for World Cup 2002, Portugal, Ireland, and Holland beat up the other three teams, as the third place finisher, Holland, had 20 points as compared to the fourth, Estonia, who finished with eight. That said, here are Portugal's scores:

Portugal 3, Estonia 1
Ireland 1, Portugal 1
Portugal 2, Holland 0 (respectable)
Portugal 3, Andorra 0
Holland 2, Portugal 2
Ireland 1, Portugal 1
Portugal 6, Cyprus 0
Portugal 7, Andorra 1
Portugal 3, Cyprus 1
Portugal 5, Estonia 0

In my opinion? Portugal won only one game against a contender, Holland. Other than that game, Portugal went 0-3-0.

To be fair, we'll take a look at the U.S. second. Um, I'm an American, so I don't care that they sucked ass the second half of qualifying and almost didn't make it. They did.

Now we'll take a look a Poland. Great shocker, with the Korea Republic winning that game. Poland won group five with a relatively easy group, save Norway. Other than these two, it was the Ukraine, Belarus, Wales, and Armenia. None of these remaining four have ever made it to the World Cup Finals. In Euro 2000 qualifying, Wales and Belarus placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in their group. Armenia placed fourth, and didn't qualify. Poland lost out to England for a chance in the tournament, and the Ukraine lost 3-2 to Slovenia and didn't make it. Only Norway made it to the tournament itself, but wasn't able to make it past the first round. So, I feel that Poland, winning World Cup Group 4 rather handily, sits in the same position as Portugal.

The Korean Republic is really the only team that has proven itself this year, defeating Poland 2-0. In World Cup Qualifying for France 1998, they perfomed semi-decently against Hong Kong and Thailand, but performed excellently against their final group, which included Japan and the United Arab Emirates, two strong teams this year. In the finals, Korea went out in the first round 0-1-2, in a strong group that included Holland, Mexico, and Belgium. South Korea (or the Korean Republic), like Japan, came to play.

Although this post is made with the United States winning 3-0 (had to update that score there), I still believe that the U.S. have a shot at getting a second spot. A win over Portugal here would make that possibility even more a reality.

Now that's what I'm talking about. U.S.A., a severe underdog in this game, pulls out a 3-2 win. Now let's see if they can take it all the way to the second round.

Great game this morning. The US team made
the most of it's chances and played stellar on
defense. I thought Portugal looked good
however, not as crisp as they could be. This
group has become very interesting I must
say..but I still have confidence in Portugal.

To get back on the old discussion, as a casual fan of soccer and major fan of baseball and football, and only a major fan of the NHL at playoff time, I just want to say to NYFenianBhoy and all the other guys who share his opinion that those who criticize soccer aren't bigger fans of baseball because it is more athletic, they are fans because it is more entertaining to watch. And that is their claim. Anyway who claims soccer players aren't better athletes than most baseball players probably have their heads up their ass, but anyone who says that the drama of Game 7 of this past World Series, for instance, can ever be matched by a soccer game is also delirious.

Soccer by virtue of such a large field being played on, guys having to play 45 minutes straight followed by another 45 minutes, running all over the place and making contact with each other and tiring out in the process, and a host of other reasons, is so defensive a sport in nature, it just won't catch on with American audiences who are more in love with the storylines and the drama of their sports, or really anything else we watch when you come down to it, as opposed to loving athletic competition. Why else are sports like Track and Field loved in Europe and laughed upon here in the States until the Olympics? Because while it might be the most athletically rigorous sport there is, something Europeans love, there just ain't the drama that builds up like a heavily favored Rams v. clear underdog Patriots SuperBowl game. America likes theatrics over anything else, and soccer, because it is such a defensive game, ain't brining any theatrics on the level of Tino Martinez' and Scott Brosius' home runs last year. This is why this sport will never catch on here. Who cares about athletics? Athletic competition, by itself, is boring. Give me a reason to care about the athletics I'm watching.

Maybe if there was a Miracle on Ice (Grass in this case) situation with Team USA in this Cup, it would fleetingly capture America's interest as there would be a great storyline to it (much like hockey only fleeetingly captured interest in 1980), not to mention the patriotism involved in a time of war. But, I gaurantee, once we go back to regular soccer games, and there is a whole bunch of games with no flow to it,just a whole buncha defense, as usual, America will yawn again.

I won't because I sorta was "forced" into semi-liking soccer by my Italian dad, but even I can't watch most of the Italian games, and that's the highest level of soccer in the world! But, I do quite love the World Cup, especially years like this when France surrenders very early in a war, as usual. All I'm saying is if you think Germany was impressive winning 8-0, wait til they play France if they do.

Now as for Osama binChuckyKnuckles over here :-p (relax, dude, I'm kidding), that might have been the weakest, lamest ass excuse for eating crow I have ever seen in my life. Have confidence in Portugal all you want. Just remember: You can't even beat USA, imagine when you play REAL teams from countries that CARE!

I guess I'll throw in a quick opinion on this whole thing with how soccer can be perceived as boring. I don't believe you can use any facts to prove whether any sport is more athletic than the other, since no real tests have been done to prove it. And why wouldn't they want to do such a thing? Because it's bad for the sport that loses. And stations don't want their customers (viewers) thinking, by fact, that athletes in one sport are better than another. Furthermore, people are individuals, and like, for one reason or another, their sport of choice. That's what is necessary here. Either you like the sport, or you don't. Move on from there. I've heard numerous arguments, and participated in them, that one sport is "harder" and therefore "better" than the other. Case in point, myself. When I was in high school, I played soccer for our school. And, I think naturally, we made fun of the football players, saying that they were unintelligent, disgusting, and the like. And the latter made fun of us saying we were fancy lads. But one sport cannot be proven to contain more athletic individuals than the other. It'll always be an opinion, and nothing more.

Ok, heres my 2 cents on how the game is boring. I'll throw a stat at all of you and tell me if I am wrong in thinking that soccer is more boring than watching grass grow.

USA 3, Portugal 2
SHOTS ON GOAL: USA - 5, Portugal - 3

A 90 minute game, and there are only 8 shots on goal combined??!! That is the epitome of boredom. The field is too fucking big, and the action is too fucking slow. 8 shots on goal combined is inexcusable.

There is more to the game than just shots. Soccer is a game of strategy, as well as action. The size of the field explains the strategic part of it. Soccer gears itself to encompass a team's strategy and intelligence, athleticism, skill, and endurance. That's why the game is ninety minutes long, has such a long field, and doesn't allow players to use their hands while in play (save for the goalie, of course). If you are a fan of sports who only likes action, then hockey might be your thing. Intelligence and athleticism, then maybe baseball. If it's skill you're after, then golf. But soccer is a sport that includes all of them. If you like that, you'd like this sport. That's about it.
