The World Cup is really the only way to
increase the popularity of soccer in the US
because of the quality of play. I once went to
an MLS game and was disappointed to find
that the stadium was only selling plastic beer
bottles, therefore preventing me from gouging
my eyes out. I equate MLS to a giant, outdoor
foosball game.

However, because of the growing popularity of
youth soccer in the land of white bread the
talent in the US continues to improve.

If you call yourself a sports fan and you can't
respect soccer, then your opinions are
worthless.

but anyone who says that the drama of Game 7 of this past World Series, for instance, can ever be matched by a soccer game is also delirious.
argentina v. england, world cup quarter finals, 1986, mexico. i guess i'm delirious, or perhaps just not a baseball fan. believe it or not, most of the world does not give a shit about game 7 of the world series.

i'm happy though, we finally got vindication this morning :-D i haven't really seen any of the matches so far, this time difference sucks.

FU you, CRX Girl, fu (in this context, but unfortunately, there is no other context to compare it to, since I don't know you, but I stand by the statement). I hate England because they think their national team is the best in the world and act comtemptously because of it. I hate England because when they didn't make it for USA '94 they felt the most grave injustice was done to them. I hate England winning Group 9 because the only decent victory they achieved was a "romping" of Germany on September 1, 2001. I also hate England becuase their Parliament thought, that after 150 years of not involving themselves, legislatively, in the American colonies, that they could all of a sudden impose taxes and laws at the blink of an eye and think there would be no question to it. I watched the game this morning, and was thourougly aggrivated at the result. Please, Nigeria, please - you are not going to make it, just go friggin' nuts and send everyone you have up and score, score, and score some more. Please.

hold a grudge much?

and i think the majority of the english people know that our team might not be the best out there, but are we supposed to support somebody else instead then?

I'm hopeful for a win on Friday, but some kind of concerns must be made. First, South Korea had their way with us during that game. The United States must be thanking the Lord Almighty for a draw with them. Looking forward to Friday, it seems that Poland, unfortunately like Saudi Arabia, is the whipping boy of group D. That said, the U.S. should be able to at least gain a draw against them. Unfortunately, Poland might be in the position to act on the opinion that there's no way they're going out with not only zero points but with no goals as well. The U.S. have to not even pay attention to the Portugal vs. South Korea game. For all intents and purposes, the U.S. should think that Portugal tied South Korea 100-100. Win, U.S., win. Show the world, myself among them, who did not give you much of a chance getting to the round of sixteen.

France - gone
Argentina - gone

If we can tie or beat Poland the second round should be interesting.

As far as the US vs S. Korea match I watched it and was really concerned. Yeah we got the first goal, maybe we had a couple of other chances that could have been goals. I really believe that on that day the better team was Korea. Hopefully this will get the US team back on track.

I think we have a chance to advance if we play to our strengths. Young, fast aggressive attackers.

why was claudio in that game? can someone answer that for me? he IS HURT!! He can't control the tempo of the game, and is really no good to us if he isn't in that role. if he is healthier, let him play...and please someone tell clint mathis 2 things...1) he is white and B) he isn't an american indian...get him off the field, he is an embarassment. keep donovan and beasley up front...send clint back to new jersey where he belongs...

I don't care how we got in, we're in. And thank god we came in second. Let Korea face Italy, I'd rather face Mexico. Come on, USA, show the world that we deserve to be in the second round.

You are right FMS.
The World Cup is the same as any other sport's playoff. It doesn't matter how you get their.

The USA matches up much better against Mexico than Italy .

GO USA.

To those who know more about this than me:

There seem to be an inordinate amount of upsets this cup. Is that so? or is it that US comentators don't have a clue about the actual talent of the teams?

2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)

1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)

The FIFA rankings are inaccurate at best.
These are what the media is using to
determine which team should and shouldn't
win. South Korea beating Italy is only an upset
because Italy has won the Cup 3 times and is
traditionally a strong team.

What you say CK is true.
The other thing to remember is that these teams are essentially national all-star teams. The players are professionals for teams in different leagues and countries. Like any all-star, you find be able to debate if the best players in any country are actually on the team.

The WC rankings are much like those of tennis. The countries are evaluated based upon past performances and their record in qualifying. But, like any sporting season beginning, anyone and everyone has a chance. However, this is the first World Cup that I've seen so many upsets. That just goes to show that rankings don't mean all that much, and I believe that will be reflected starting this September, when the qualifying for Euro 2004 (Portugal) begins. But a comparison might be made to, say, the World Series. Who would you rather see, the Yankees versus the Atlanta Braves, or the Milwaukee Brewers versus the Pittsburgh Pirates? The answer is the fear of major advertisers when the possibility of a Senegal vs. USA World Cup final is possible. In the world context, people would rather see Brazil vs. Spain than the former example. So while upsets are good, and show that rankings don't mean a lock to the semifinals, marketers want those big names at the end to obtain the big bucks and gain the huge audience. Regardless, I'm happy for the position the U.S. is in. Hey, anybody would be. I don't care if the U.S. goes down to Germany like Saudi Arabia did. I'm proud of them for having gotten this far. But I will say, Germany does make mistakes and is beatable. If they play like they did Monday, the U.S. team has somewhat of a shot at advancing even further.

This is very true. This German squad is not as strong as the last one we faced in the World Cup. Also, the US team was intimidated by the Germans.
I hope for a good match but echo the sentiments of FMS.

I don't know anything about soccer and don't really care. I am glad though the U.S. is doing well just for patriotic reasons. If they lose, I could not give a shit about soccer.

Dude, I was being serious. I think the only reason soccer is getting coverage at all is because we are in it. If they lose to Germany, World CUp soccer will be on the news after WNBA games and minor league baseball. Favorite sport in the world, except the U.S. WFAN barely even talks about it. It gets less coverage than Hockey.

I am not putting it down, but it is way on the bottom of the list of favorites in the U.S behind nfl, nba, baseball, nhl, golf and tennis.

Trust me, I have no doubt it is at the bottom of the list of covered sports. That's why I don't even watch sports summaries on television to see how this or that team did. Speaking for myself, I've watched just about every World Cup game so far this year, so I already know what the highlights are. Secondly, for the games I did miss, I log onto a couple of internet sites to obtain results. I don't mind that soccer is where it is on America's list of sports. The coverage of the games themselves has been done well by ESPN and ESPN2, and that's the best I could ask for.
