Animosity on The Airwaves
Don and Mike Hit Back At N.Y. Lineup Mates

By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 28, 2002; Page C01

Radio personality Don Geronimo insists he's tried, really tried, to hold his tongue. But the voluble Geronimo says he's had it up to here. So now, it's war.

In an unusual (perhaps even unprecedented) radio feud, Geronimo and partner Mike O'Meara are having it out on the air with another pair of deejays. And not just any other pair: The targets of their wrath happen to be a duo who work for the same company, Opie and Anthony, the New York radio jocks who follow "The Don & Mike Show" on WJFK-FM in Washington and on WNEW-FM in New York. All four are employed by Infinity Broadcasting, which owns the two stations and syndicates their shows nationally.

For months, the New York deejays have lobbed taunts at Don and Mike during their weekday show. Their main jibe is that D&M's midday program hasn't drawn much of an audience on WNEW, providing a poor lead-in to O&A's late-afternoon program. They've also characterized the two men as old, even though Geronimo and O'Meara are just a few years older than the late-thirtyish Opie and Anthony.

This was met with silence by Don and Mike -- until late last week. The two Washington-based deejays impolitely pointed out that "The Opie & Anthony Show" isn't setting Washington's radio market on fire, either. "Your show is ranked eighth in Washington!" said a derisive Geronimo during his show. "What I'm saying is that you're not being embraced in Washington, D.C."

Later, Geronimo called O&A to argue on the air. He was promptly cut off by the hosts. "He looked ridiculous," said Anthony, aka Anthony Cumia. "We thought it was funny."

Media personalities -- especially those who work for the same outfit -- tend to keep their differences quiet. O'Meara and Geronimo, for example, say they have never been friendly with another Infinity star, Howard Stern, whose nationally syndicated program precedes them on WJFK, but neither camp has hurled invective at the other on the air.

The deejays' internecine fight is roughly akin to Barbara Walters dissing ABC colleague Diane Sawyer, or Channel 4 news anchor Jim Vance bashing Channel 4 weatherman Bob Ryan.

Of course, since both radio shows specialize in aggressive, male-oriented shtick, it's worth viewing the current hostilities with a little skepticism. Is it a pro wrestling-style act? Both sides say absolutely not. "I don't like those guys as people, and I don't like their radio show," says Gregg "Opie" Hughes, in an interview. "They're back-stabbers who can't be trusted. They've told a lot of lies about us."

In a separate interview, Geronimo calls the crossfire "petty, ridiculous, egotistical and juvenile," but adds that he couldn't keep quiet any longer. He says he tried to broker peace talks several months ago but was rebuffed.

Ultimately, he blames the stations' management for not silencing everyone. "I would love you to put this in the paper: What I would like management to do is manage. A strong manager would have said to Opie and Anthony: 'I don't care if you like it or not. We're going to get the four of you in a room and work this out.' The shows should be able to coexist."

Careful not to name names, Geronimo describes WNEW, in particular, as "a cesspool of a radio station." (He and O'Meara do two shows a week from the New York station.) Calls to Alan Leinwand and Ken Stevens, the general managers of WJFK and WNEW, respectively, weren't returned.

For the record, "The Opie & Anthony Show" has fared relatively better among Washington area listeners than "The Don & Mike Show" has with New Yorkers. "O&A," heard here since last year when "D&M" moved to middays, ranked 14th among late-afternoon programs in the most recent quarterly audience survey, capturing a 3.4 percent share.

In New York, "D&M" hasn't cracked the top 20, and is attracting a 0.8 percent share. Geronimo concedes that "we're going to get fired in New York because the ratings stink." He blames O&A, in part, suggesting the pair didn't want his program to succeed because it would compete for attention with their show.

Replies Cumia, "Don is a desperate man. His show is a complete disaster."

Only last month, in an interview with The Post, Geronimo said he was "very happy" with the way the Opie show was performing in this market, even though it was attracting less than half the adult audience that "The Don & Mike Show" drew when it aired in the same time period. "The station is in great shape," he said then.

Now, Geronimo said he is so angry about the on-air sniping that he and his partner will refuse to do anything to promote "O&A."

"I'll let them do their show," he says. "And I will bet any amount of money that they won't succeed here."

Read that article in the Washington Post this morning.

"Your show is ranked eighth in Washington!" said a derisive Geronimo during his show. "What I'm saying is that you're not being embraced in Washington, D.C."

8th is nowhere near as bad as 14th, where they were at. I don't quite see how that can be count as not being "embraced", seeing as it seems their audience is growing. I'm personally seeing tons of WOW stickers now in the cars around here.
But besides all of that, again, which is worse - to be 8th in the #6 market, or to be 25th in the #1 market?

Geronimo calls the crossfire "petty, ridiculous, egotistical and juvenile," but adds that he couldn't keep quiet any longer. He says he tried to broker peace talks several months ago but was rebuffed.

I'm assuming he's referring to the clandestine "Opie invited only" meetings Don was trying to have.

More lies & hypocrisy from D&M.

Now, Geronimo said he is so angry about the on-air sniping that he and his partner will refuse to do anything to promote "O&A."
"I'll let them do their show," he says. "And I will bet any amount of money that they won't succeed here."

This is what I find most worrisome about the article.

Depending upon how much power Geronimo still wields at that station (WJFK), O&A could be screwed if Donnie tries to mess with the way the program is run here. My only hope is that he's been somewhat neutered at JFK, and I think he may have been, because last week's O&A embarassment of Don was aired in its completion (as opposed to before, when O&A's criticisms of D&M were edited out).

D&M are hypocrites. They criticized O&A for taking Friday off for a 4-day weekend and then they do the same thing on the opposite end of the weekend. I know a hell of a lot more people who took off EARLY for the weekend than stayed out LATE!

I knew one of the Don and Mike Koolade drikners would have something to say.

Iamacne, take the dick out your mouth and pay attention. Don admitted this on the air. They are have not been #1 in the "beauty contest" rating for "some time" not since they moved to middays either. They've even made jokes about it with Don putting on a black voice and saying, " We beat whitey".

But really, trying to say they're better because they had good DC ratings, is like saying someones a better ballplayer because he had a better avg in AAA. New York is the big time.

Notice how the fags claim to want a "radio war", then run away, not showing up on the air. This tactic didn't help them against Stern and it won't work now either.

By the way, Don and Mike fans, why don't you try going to one of the pathetic boards for D&M fans, if any are still up, that is.

Don and Mike? Lykus? What other second rate ass backwards show is WNEW going to bring in now to waste 4 hours of air time?

I heard some of the dick and moron show Friday.{he said dick].

How hypocritical are they? They were ranting and raving on O&A and complained that they couldn't take the heat and took off friday. They took off today. So Fuck you Dick and Moron. I know you are reading this.

Too little too late. Trying to get a fight going between shows to get some publicity and get your ratings in NYC up.How pathetic.

You have no ratings here so just stay in DC.

It's 3:05 and we've got a replay of Dice and Stalker Patty, which means ... they're probably in a meeting with management (and the fat fucks?), and might not be able to respond to Friday's attack properly.

I really hope I'm wrong about this.

If I remember correctlly, the real reason any animosity began, is because Don and Mike were pissed at the huge contract O&A got, and they took a few shots at them on their show ( I believe the phrase "Flavor of the Month" was used, funny, that was how long ago?) and then O&A took a few shots at them too...

Gomez,
Since I seem to remember that you are a DC listener, you didn't hear any of the fight that occured before O&A were syndicated (and therefore before the big bucks). D&M were still doing drive time in DC and tape delayed in NY at 7pm. (R&F were on 11-2). ( I think this was around Jan 2001, since that was when I took the time to register here) O&A were really ticked off at management - Stern silencing, etc. It seems that D&M had been promised that they would be live in NY within a year, and they were going to leave NY. Of course they were really honkering to move O&A out of the drive time slot. O&A got wind, and a few things were said back and forth.
Don claimed then that they weren't after the O&A drive time slot, but just wanted to be live (yeah, sure). This was probably infinity's back up plan in case O&A didn't re-up. Eventually O&A resolved their issues and D&M settled for moving show to mid-days live in all markets, with O&A filling 3-7 in DC as well as other markets.

Just a little history as I remember it - anyone who remembers better, feel free to correct.

Actually, I think the first time I heard D&M bitch about O&A was when the Radio Chick got fired in NY and D&M wanted O&A to move into her timeslot so they could be on live 3-7. As it turns out, D&M wound up live in her midday slot, but had to change to middays in all their other markets in order to get it. I don't think they were too pleased about that.

If Dumb and Mislead were such powerfull "radio gods" as they think they are why did they have to move so O&A would be live. BTW someone should tell D&M that slut Remeny was doing the same stick on Howard Stern this past winter.

I don't think they were too pleased about that.

I could be wrong, at best I used to listen to them off and on back then, so I don't know the whole story...

I just wish they'd get D&M off of WJFK, let them go head to head with O&A on a different station, would be interesting...Plus it would leave a nice spot that the Sports Junkies(the only other thing worth listening to on WJFK) could fill....Anyone from DC might have noticed this too, but ever since O&A came to DC, you never hear the Junkies talk about D&M, but they do acknowledge that they listen to and like O&A....D&M can't get any love anywhere....Excuse me while I don't cry for them

Gomez,
I didn't mean to imply you were wrong;
as I said, most of the stuff I was referring to occured before syndication, so unless you were on SU, you wouldn't have heard it.

I think that a lot of people would be happy if D&M changed stations, but I don't think it will happen - it would be very ballsy, and radio people aren't known for that.

(And D&M people, I'm saying that because of "fit"; D&M radio style much closer to Imus than Stern or O&A)
