A friend of mine was is being treated for cancer and she recommened I read something that she read a few weeks back. It's Lance Armstrong's biography called It's Not About the Bike. He was a world champion cyclist who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 28; he beat the cancer then won the Tour de France. Not a bad read...but you could tell the parts when the ghostwriter took over
--Edit--
Oops, sorry Krebs, I didn't see that you mentioned that one already...I guess it just shows how well I read

I'm about to start reading The Left Hand of Darkness for a psych class, and from what I've heard, it's a pretty odd little book

Oh, you mean the book that I mentioned before?

I tried to read On The Road a few months back, but couldn't get into it. I couldn't get into his stream of consciousness writing. It funny though, because that's the exact same way that I write. But no ones ever told me that it's too hard to read.

I'm open for recommendations in the King/Koontz genre if anyone has any!

Koontz's Intensity is pretty insane & King's Bag of Bones. I second the recommendation for Clive Barker! He's one of my favorite authors, DEFINITELY read Imajica...I'm reading The Great & Secret Show right now and then I'll read Everville again (it's a series).

Otherwise, I've just finished Foley Is Good and like some of you guys, the LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit again :) Oh, and I want to start American Gods soon.

I'm such a geek!

This thread has always been popular. I thank Arthur Dent for turning me on to Turtledove. Great alternate history reads. SF421 mentioned Clive Barker, and I'd like to add 2 more of his titles: Weave World, and Damnation Game.
Presently reading Fatherland by Robert Harris.

rommel, your sig pic isn't showing. You missed something on your set up. Go to your file section and make it public. Otherwise only signed on members of your group can see it. you have to make posts, membership and files public for it to work. IM me if you have any problems. I can walk you through it.

SCI-FI SUGGESTIONS:

Hyperion by Dan Simmons (3 book series)

Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein (dif from movie)

FANTASY SUGGESTIONS

Jessica Elba, Kristin Durnst and Denise Richards in a hot tub of whipped cream...oh that's right, we were talking about books.

Song of Arbonne by Guy Gavriel Kay
Through The Mirror of Her Dreams by Stephen R. Donaldson (2 book series)

BOOKS I'm Reading now:

Nothing. Playing Diablo 2 currently. I have a pile of about 7-8 books that I haven't gotten to yet.

Watchers by Dean Koontz

Is that the one in the series about Snow (I think that was his name)...the guy who had the disease where he couldn't be in just about any bright light? If not, what was that? IMO Koontz's best

SCI-FI SUGGESTIONS:
Dune by Frank Herbert

I was thinking of trying this. Any read it already? I was hoping the book could make the movie make sense.

One night I watched Akira & then Dune. And had now clue what was going on in either :)

I actually also read a Lovecraft compilation a month or two ago, the guy is intense. After the Adams collection I might read Stephen King's It since they are re-showing the miniseries (which was pretty good) on Sci-Fi yesterday and tonight.

Ladi, I am going to be reading Dune next...I will let you know how it was when i finished...that is if you don't finish first. It is only one of about 20 books sitting unread on the shelf to be finished...the decision on what to read next is the worst!!

I liked Dune, ladi. It goes into much more detail than the movie ever could.

I just finished reading "Losing Julia" by Jonathan Hull. This is his first book but it's extremely well done. I'm a fan ... there's enough blood and guts as well as romance for all.

After years of forced reading via education, the only books that I can read non are non-fiction accounts of organized "crime". I am about to begin "The Westies", which is the story of the Irish Mob in Hell's Kitchen and follows them through the '60s, '70s, and '80s. I will be reading this in a cottage, on an island in the middle of a big lake, 2 hours north of Toronto. There is no electricity so besides watersports, card playing, Molson XXX and whiskey, I will be reading.

Just finished the Dark Elf Trilogy.
Gooch, there is a sequel to Hyperion called Endymion. It's pretty good.
I mostly read technical books, though.

I'm currently reading Motley Crue's the Dirt and assorted comic books.

On my pile to read is Cryptonomicon and American Gods.

Dune was awesome. Wheel of Time is good, but kinda dense. I've gotten through the first 3 books so far.

I loved Intensity by Dean Koonz. Right now, am reading Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates. After I finish that up, I have Glue by Irvine Welsh, and Angels In America, a play by Tony Kushner.

"borrowed" this compilation of the first five books of the trilogy.

First five? Theres only five, unless you include the short Young Zaphod Plays It Safe. Which would come between SLATFATF and Mostly Harmless. Now that I'm out of school, I've begun reading some stuff I actually like again.

I got through Heinlein's The Man Who Sold the Moon. It's fabulous. I've also borrowed Starship Titanic and Isaac Asimov's Foundation for the summer. When I get through those, and before the summer is over, I hope to read Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land or Time Enough For Love, or Tomorrow and Tomorrow by some guy I don't remember.

Of course, I have to read The Quick Python Book and Shaum's Outline: Group Theory for my summer course at CCNY that keeps me from hearing 2 and a half hours of O&A Monday through Friday. Dammit.

Oh....
I have WAY too much information here-sorry in advance-awesome thread. Books sooo rule.

My only new recommendation to this thread is a series by Nancy Kress-"Beggars in Spain" is the 1st book. About Nanotechnology, ethics, rich vs poor. Incredible writing and storytelling. Go read these books people, do not hesitate.

Ikea-"It" is an OK mini-series and a good book. But fuck that, read and watch "The Stand"-far superior.
Hi Spitfire-as regards other Kings to recommend-well-all of 'em. They almost all completely rule. READ DREAMWEAVER, his newest, it's fucking sick. Even better than "Hearts in Atlantis".

Clive Barker-as mentioned, Imajica, Weaveworld, Cabal, The Great & Secret Show especially, so many more-well, again-all of 'em. He's actually SCARIER than King, although King's my favorite.

Kool-Aid Acid Test-great. In that venue, I also recommend "V" (NO not THAT V) by Thomas Pynchon, a real "Trip" of a book.

Mr B-that Jean Auel series is the most carefully researched, real, historic (well how would we really know but fuck it, it seems so damn real) and fascinating series about the ancient times I've ever read. Absolutely wonderful books. Did ya know it takes Ms Auel about five years to research & write each one?

"BE READING PEOPLE" :) IT IS FUNdamental

Oh & as for Oprah's Book Club-who the hell cares? Make your own choices. Don't be a Godamned lemming, please. Nothing worse than that.
In other words- if you don't like my recommendations, good!! ;) just make up your own mind what you want to read and go forth and do it.

Godamn-Looks I AM the biggest bookworm/nerd to ever walk the planet.
