I have to agree with Face, any Higgins is a good read. All the ones with Dillon are great, but the best were the old Liam Devlin books, The Eagle Has Landed was without a doubt his best.

Coincidentally I finished my biography of Black Jack Pershing so I picked up War & Peace just for good measure.

I recently read the first four books in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Very funny. Douglas Adams is to sci-fi what Terry Pratchet is to fantasy.

Also, look for "Trigger" by Arthur C. Clark. About scientists who discover a new energy beam that dneutralizes explosives and detonates gunpowder and all the military, political, moral, and social implications. Very good.

Ikea and Wounded Angel,

My comment about F451 was sarcasm...it's nice to know that no one will be burning books, especially in this thread.;)

I'll read Trigger next, Arthur.

And I almost forgot about "Dark Inheritance"
by W. Michael Gear, Kathleen O'Neal Gear
It's about an anthropologist and his 13 y.o. daughter who raise a Banobo chimp, teach it sign language etc. Then learn the chimp is a genetic cross between human and Banobo, so it has real human intelligence. Also a very good story.

Well, I got a little bored this weekend so I picked up my old copy of Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt.

It is one of the most honest and emotional books I have read in a long time

Anyone read the cantubury tales by Chaucer I believe?? I always wanted to read it, but never had the time. Is it worth it?

F'Tard, reading Chaucer is almost like reading another language. I read a few of the "tales" in High School. We need an "Old English to Modern English" translation to figure out the language and the teachers input to understand the historical context.

For example, when one of the characters points out that another traveler does not have a beard and never will, he's saying the guy is gay and wants to look like a woman because only woman didn't have beards.

It's a difficult read because of the language and the cultural differences, but very good once you figure it all out.

The Canterbury Tales is a very difficult read. I had to read it for school, and it was struggle. If you are going to go back to that era, I would suggest Dr. Faustus by Marlowe.

canterbury tales isn't that bad, read two or three in 10th grade and got through them all right. they can be a bit confusing i guess, but they're actually kind of good. chaucer was actually planning to write like 100 something of them, but died after only a dozen (?whatever number is in the book, forgot).

Alright, I know I will be tooled on relentlessly for admitting this, but here goes:

While I was on vacation, I stayed with a couple of friends that are teachers. Their summer consists of nights that go until the sun comes up, followed by sleep until dinner time. Since I was getting up at the sound of the lunch bell, I decided to read a bit. So what, you say is so embarrasing about that? Well, I kinda got into Harry Potter. I am a fan of the whole fantasy book genre, and I have to admit, I loved these books. I wound up reading all four of the current books in under a week. To make matters worse, I am now jonesing for the movie to come out. Hopefully that will get me through until the next book comes out. If you are looking for a nice easy read that will thoroughly entertain you, I have to suggest you pick up some Harry Potter. Ok, so maybe I am just trying to get some other sucker hooked so I won't feel like a tool..... but can you blame me? :)

Thanks for that personal insight SJ.

Actually my cousin (well, my grandmothers husbands sisters daughter) is Judy Blume, and she wrote lots of kids books and then went into woman stuff, love and life stories. The book superfudge is actually dedicated both to her son Larry and myself.. It might be above the reading level of some here, but good for kids :):)

That's so cool king...she was one of my faves when I was a kid...I read "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret & the Ramona books countless times...

And the Harry Potter books are so great! The stories are execllent and imaginative, don't feel bad for reading them! I can't wait for the next one to come out...

Dad: Where do you get your values? From that stinking heavy metal music you listen to day and night?

Steal them from libraries, that's my little secret.

Truthfully I might go to the Harry Potter series next instead of It or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (I just saw Blade Runner again last Friday which was an awesome movie, 20 year old and effects as good as anything today. I can't f'ing believe Maltin gave it only 1.5 stars). Then again I've been putting off Al Franken's Why Not Me? for awhile now...

Well, for those of you who are interested in reading the Harry Potter series, the first one has been released in paperback, so you can pick that one up pretty cheap. The others are still only out in hard cover. The first three retail for $19.95, but Sam's club has them for twelve bucks. The fourth (and most current) is twice as long as the others and sells for $25 retail.

Like Spit said, they are very imaginative, but not so much so that they become difficult to read. I honestly had a hard time putting them down for silly things like sleep and work. I don't want to say too much about them (wouldn't want to ruin it now would I?) but I haven't enjoyed a series this way for a long time.

The Harry Potter books look great for any age. I'll probably pick them up soon.

King F, Judy Blume, really? COOL! I read her books over and over again when I was a kid. NICE dedication too :)

& Ikea and other aspiring King readers,
"FUCK 'IT'".

Read The Stand, it's an epic saga and lots of good clean apocalyptic post-plague fun.

The Stand was the only King book I could read. I dont like horror or gore. But the Stand was an amazing book, every time I go through the Lincoln tunnel I get a chill because it reminds me of that scene where Larry walks through all the corpses.

The stand and Christine are my favorite King books, Christine was much better as a book.

I just finished Winters Heart, Jordans last book in the series for now, and I am in need of another series to read, I think I will go to the lord of the rings again.
