Yanks pulled out a win they NEEDED to have. That was the weirdest game I've watched in a long time. How many mistakes did the Dbacks make? I think that catcher was found on the side of the GW bridge about to jump. I think the cold really affected arizona. Brenly in the post game interview was shaking uncontrolably.
Clemens pitched a great game. He finally came up big when he needed too. I was impressed. Let's hope schilling is off his game and El duque is on....

everybody knew the D'Backs coldn't pull off the sweep, its just a matter of smarts and when to use Johnson or Schilling, 2-1, Yanks aren't out of it yet, this is where Brenly has to show off his managing knowledge.

I have had enough with Sig Pics, I should have gotten adopted!

NEW YORK -- A lot of things in Yankee Stadium made sense Tuesday night.

Paul Simon walking toward his seat. Steve Buscemi's Fargo face popping up in the crowd. The President throwing a strike with the ceremonial first pitch.

Heck, even George Steinbrenner waiting patiently outside the entrance while the Secret Service secured the area five hours before Game 3 didn't seem all that out of place.

But then Arizona manager Bob Brenly opened his mouth -- and logic took a paid leave of absence. Following a cold-to-the-marrow 2-1 loss to New York, Brenly announced that Curt Schilling would start Game 4.

You've heard of Schilling. Everybody has. It's impossible to exaggerate the impact that the burly right-hander has had in the playoffs. Following the first 20-win season of his career, Schilling has morphed into a Legend of the Fall, doing the kinds of things that scream for a tailor to get his measurements ready for a Cooperstown blazer.

In four starts -- two against the St. Louis Cardinals, one against the Atlanta Braves and another last Saturday in the World Series -- he's 4-0 with a 0.79 ERA in 34 innings. Opponents are hitting .137 against him.

Those stats are beyond great. A few exit ramps past incredible. They are just flat out filthy. And exactly why Schilling shouldn't be pitching on Wednesday.

Yes, he wants the ball. He needs the ball if you have listened to him talk over the last few days. Frankly the 34-year-old should be commended for not searching for an excuse.

His bravado, however, is misguided. Brenly said that this was his decision, a plan that would be activated if the D-Backs dropped Tuesday's game.

If so, shame on him. This entire postseason Brenly has had a Midas touch, shaking heads with cubic zirconia moves that have turned 24-karat. This choice is different, though. It's dangerous, clumsy. It's not like turning the cleanup spot into a revolving door. Or replacing Gold Glover Steve Finley with Danny Bautista.

Going to Schilling on three days rest reeks of panic.

Why?

Forget the numbers for a second. We'll get to them later. First and foremost, Schilling is a novice.

"I don't have a (history)," Schilling said of pitching on three days rest. "I have never done it before in the big leagues."

They always say you never forget your first, but this could be the kiss of doom. The risk just doesn't match the reward. So what if the Yankees evened the Series at two by roughing up Miguel Batista? Big deal.

If the series was tied, Arizona could then turn to Schilling to unknot the mess on his regular rest. Talk about a momentum shift. Arizona tops New York in Game 5 in Yankee Stadium then heads back for the clincher with Randy Johnson electrifying the folks at The BOB? What could possibly be more demoralizing for the Yankees.

"We are only doing it because we think Curt's capable," Brenly said. "His physical makeup. He's in the best shape of his career. And he got stronger the deeper we got into the season. There's also his insistence, his coming into my office and telling me he can do it."

Believing is all well and good, makes for swell movies like Rudy and Hoosiers. But there's no reason to have confidence that Schilling can write this script. Since 1999, playoff starters throwing on three days' rest have been awful, bordering on atrocious. They are 1-9 with a 9.73 ERA in 15 games -- none of which took place in Coors Field.

Think on that a minute. Only Seattle's Jamie Moyer in this year's ALDS has posted a victory in these circumstances in recent memory. Tom Glavine couldn't do it. Greg Maddux, who if memory serves is pretty good, couldn't do it. And neither could Al Leiter.

Might Schilling giggle at this trend? Perhaps. But it seems more likely that by going to him now, you dilute the product. You turn a great pitcher into a good one, leaving him vulnerable to a loss. What's more, if the Yankees win this game, Schilling's aura of invincibility is gone. New York certainly won't be afraid to see him in a Game 7 -- which is one of the factors behind the quick turnaround -- if they have already beaten him.

"Curt is going to pitch tomorrow," Brenly explained, "because he's the right guy to pitch tomorrow."

So where does that leave Batista? You think his ego isn't slightly deflated? He thought he was the man for Game 4. Now he's back in The Green Room, bubbling with frustration.

"(Brenly) kept changing his mind, so you just play along," Batista said. "I'm not here to judge commands. I'm here to follow orders."

The Curt decision has been made. The consequences await.

At times it's cruel being a Yankees fan. After so many times they've been left for dead even by their own fans and then coming back, you just KNOW for a FACT they're going to win, you just never know how. Amazing. First pitch swinging by Tino, "It is high, it is far, it is...(insert 15 seconds of dramatic silence here)...gone!!!!" Then the best SS in the sport wins it.

To think, an out away, down by two. And then they did what they always do.

Bob Brenly shot his wad worrying about game seven when he had this game in his back pocket and then making Kim go 3 innings, what a tool. Will he stoop to throwing Johnson tomorrow?

BTW, as of midnight, Joe Torre was officially out of a contract, I don't think he's walking out now.

About time Jeter did something...

And with that game-winning dinger, he earns the title of Mr. November.

it's times like these where i am extremely proud to be a Yankees fan. this team never quits, when it would be so easy for them to do so.

i could hardly contain myself seeing Tino and Jeter's home runs.

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter became baseball's first Mr. November, hitting a home run with two outs in the bottom of 10th inning to lift the New York Yankees over Arizona 4-3 Wednesday night and tie the World Series at two games each.

Tino Martinez saved the Yankees with a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth off Byung-Hyun Kim, then Jeter connected off the Diamondbacks' closer.

The winning shot came at 12:04 a.m. EST, shortly after the Yankee Stadium scoreboard flashed: ``Welcome to November Baseball.''

Curt Schilling, pitching on three days' rest, did everything Arizona could have asked. But when Kim relieved, the game turned spooky for the Diamondbacks on Halloween night.

Now, the Yankees will send Mike Mussina against Miguel Batista in Game 5 Thursday night.

Mariano Rivera broke three bats in a perfect 10th inning for the win.

A crowd that had been crazy all night turned quiet in the ninth inning with the defending three-time champions in trouble.

Kim, who struck out the side in the eighth, gave up a one-out single to Paul O'Neill before striking out Bernie Williams.

But Martinez, who had been hitless in nine Series at-bats, launched a drive over the center field fence to tie it. The sellout crowd of 55,863 roared, and several Yankees jumped over the railing in front of the dugout to celebrate.

Kim set down the first two batters in the 10th. But Jeter, who had been only 1-for-15 in the Series, rose to the occasion - as he had so many times in past Octobers.

Jeter fouled three two-strike pitches and then sent an opposite-field drive into the seats in right.

Now, the Yankees will send Mike Mussina against Miguel Batista in Game 5 Thursday night.

--------------------------------------------

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- New month, same old magic.

Tino Martinez hit one of the most dramatic homers in World Series history with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and Derek Jeter won it with a two-out homer in the 10th as the New York Yankees evened the 2001 World Series with a 4-3 triumph over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game Four.

As baseball crept into November for the first time in history, Jeter capped one of the most memorable World Series games of all time by lining a 3-1 pitch from Arizona closer Byung-Hyun Kim just over the right-field wall for the game-winner.

But Jeter would not have had the chance to win it had Martinez not delivered the biggest homer of his career in the most pressure-filled of situations.

Handcuffed by Curt Schilling on three days' rest, the three-time defending champions were staring at a three games to one deficit. Down to their final out, Paul O'Neill flared an opposite-field single in front of left fielder Luis Gonzalez and Martinez hit Kim's next offering over the wall in right-center field.

As center fielder Steve Finley gave up pursuit, the crowd of 55,863 erupted and Yankees spilled out of the dugout. A stadium that fell deadly silent after the Diamondbacks scored two runs in the eighth would not stop celebrating until Martinez came out for a curtain call.

The win evened the series with Game Five at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.

How the fuck do they do it over and over again? This just goes to show what happens when you let a chink do something for you. Why take Schilling out??????? I dont get it at all, there is no game 7 if you leave him in because they would be up 3-1, and still have randy johnson going. It all leans toward the fact that this whole thing is rigged. lol

And yeah it was a great game, but that doesnt change the fact that i am sick to my stomach right now.

I just KNOW that Thursday's editions of BOTH the News and the Post are going to have on, either the front or back page, the headline "Mr. November", cuz they're silly like that. And check the date, I posted this on Wednesday night, long before the papers went to press...

Well, im waiting for a gust of wind to pick Mike Morgan up, turn him upside down, and drop him on top of his head. Also waiting for a foul ball to hit Schilling on his pitching hand, breaking it. Might as well, since everything else is going the Yankees way.
