this is a completely ludicrous statement...why is it that you think a human fabrication of any sort should or even could dictate ones spirituality? i think that true spirituality goes far deeper than any set of laws or beliefs a religion feeds to you ever could...hitler did profess himself a catholic...i consider myself relatively spiritual...independently of religion or god....organized religion breeds hate...there are countless examples that afirm this...religion aslo fosters intolerance...do you think there is something wrong with raising kids to be free, have open minds, & be decent respectable people for their own sakes...or do you think we should instill fear? frightening people into acting a certain way is barely free will. i'm sure kids raised without religion will turn out just fine without all the shit clouding their minds.

i've always hated rowan atkinson, but jello wrestling, however, is still a-okay in my book

personally, i am still semi-catholic.i still believe, but i'm just questioning the way the church has ran itself and corrupted its teachings, but thats not why i'm posting here.

the reason i AM posting here is to say the stupidity of all areguements about religion.do any of you serriously think you can change anybody elses minds on this subject?an argeument on religion is a waste of time, since it will have no effect 99 times out of 100

You don't need to be religious to be spiritual. Many of the things that religion teaches are great things. "The Golden Rule", don't steal, kill, do bad stuff, jealousy is bad, wrath is bad, all that stuff. It's a great guidline to use for parenting, but good parents can teach that stuff on their own without having someone else in the sky teach it for them.

The Bible is filled with many amazing stories that explain how the world was created, and helps solve some of the mysteries of life. So does Greek Mythology. Why is one considered Gospel, and one considered fiction?

I was born and raised a Catholic. I see a lot of things about my religion and Christianity I don't like. Like we're all gonna burn in hell because we said a bad word or spanked our junk to some porno. I also find the Bible thumping Jesus Freaks(Think Jimmy Swaggart and his ilk) to be the worst scumbags on Earth. I disagree with a lot of the teachings, from abortion to celibacy for priests. I really have a hard on for Jehovahs Witnesses. The most arrogant c-suckers I have ever come across. To not be friendly with your next door neighbor just because he or she doesn't believe in the same religion as you is wrong. To turn a 20 minute discussion on tattoos and drinking into a 2 hour theological discussion is another pain in the ass. But, I'm digressing. I believe in ghosts, and guardian angels. Reason being, I cheated death in my car a few years back and my brother cheated death twice in 2 months, once on Sept 11th, and again in November when that plane went down in the Rockaways. So although I do believe in God and all that, I am not a practicing Catholic and probably won't be until the Church straightens up its act and starts paying taxes like the rest of us.

It ain't easy being greasy in a world full of cleanliness and you know, all that other madness.

Religion threads like this never change anyone's minds, but that's really not what they're meant for. It's just a place to exchange ideas. Every now and then a thread like this pops up and I absolutely LOVE the debate every time. It's so futile but so much fun. And the end product is usually that the believers question their beliefs mementarily, and come out even stronger believers in the end. And the atheists, well, it's a hell of a lot easier to be an atheist and believe is what you CAN SEE as opposed to what you can't see until you die.

That is, when you die, IF the religious folk are right. Otherwise all you find out when you're dead is that you're stuck in a box, rotting. But you really don't find that out at all, do you?

I'd love to believe in an afterlife cause honestly, not existing anymore would really not be cool. But LIKING the idea and actually BELIEVING in it.... different things. No sense in believing in it, really. You find out (or don't) when you die. By then it's too late.

i'm truly lost on the issue. i cant put my faith on either side of the existence of God. i do know that man has fucked with religion for his own gains, warping its stories and lessons for power. thus then i have no trust in organized religious groups. my roommate's a unitarian, which is like an informal mix of different theologies, but i can't even get into that. it's still all about people imposing their values on others

The passage brought into question by YD concerning false idols is one of the most highly debated aspects of the Bible. While at some point his description was taught and published, the passage itself and the meaning behind it has changed quite a bit over the years. Once it was believed to be about all idols, including those representing He Himself, while it was once even believed the whole passage was false. I believe now it refers to only idols of the Pagan gods, more specifically Baal. While I'm not gonna try to convert anyone around here, I will say 90 percent of the Bible is up to interpretation, and very rarely held in even the most religious circles as fact.

On a side note, I am currently taking a class that basically tears the Bible apart from a historical perspective. While I'm a devout Catholic, I must say it raises many interesting questions, and further cements my assumption that most is up to personal interpretation. Too many conflicts exist, both time related and idea related, to follow in the strict sense of the words. I believe the ideas are all there, they just get a little muddled at times due to changing texts, new finds, and new translations.

I've heard similar idea called consensus reality, so I refer to it as such. I'm just curious if we both came up with a weird idea, or my beliefs have actually spread. i usually avoid these types of discussions because basically, i suck at putting my thoughts into comprehendable words. so, the following will probably be a big old ramble on, good luck with it.

now, as it's been said, obviously nobody's gonna get converted from reading this thread, so, basically, it's a place for us to express our opinions, and that's all, there's really no point in arguing anyone's points of view. i'm actually curious to know how most of us were raised; personally, i've found that a lot of people who are discruntled with religion are catholic. but that's probably because of where i'm coming from, and the fact that most christian religions, aside from eastern orthodox, were formed by people who had problems with the roman catholic doctrine. personally, i was raised catholic by my mum who made us go to church every sunday, while my dad who is basically agnostic, left the religion thing up to her. now, we were never forced to go, but if we protested that whole irish catholic guilt thing came in to play. and honestly, i tried really hard to believe. i went through the whole process of first communion and confirmation. i even taught ccd classes for a while, but i always came accross a problem when the 7th grade kids i was teaching raised the same questions i had.

i think the first thing that started me questioning things was when i was maybe about 9 or 10. the homily one sunday was about confession, and how confession is the be all and end all of whether you go to heaven, thus then, a murderer who confesses his sins and seeks forgiveness can go to heaven, while someone who basically leads a good life but does not confess to the minor infractions, will go to hell. the day it really all ended for me though, was when they wheeled in the big screen tv in the middle of mass to show a video asking for money for the poor. this was shortly after my church had built a multimillion dollar classroom facility and residence for the priests. i think it was also around that time that my younger sister was confirmed. at the party afterward, i saw the priest talking on a cell phone. now, i understand that priests are sometimes needed for emergency last rites or whatever, but i think a more cost efficient beeper would suffice. after that i really resented that my mum along with the rest of the congregation would blindly throw their hard earned money into the basket in the middle of mass. meanwhile, the collection for the poor came at the end of the service, kind of like an after thought. i'm not going to go through and quote people and argue stuff, but there is one thing:

Funny...I grew up in church and I never saw or heard of my pastor do any of the above...
i found out, long after i'd left home, that the bishop who confirmed me, who was praised when he came to our diosese(sp?) for being so involved in the youth programs, is now serving time in a "special retirement facility" for doing just that. and although i'd already "seen the light" as it were by then, it disgusts me to no end, and further sealed my hatred of organized religion. so, as far as having life/death situations, no i haven't, but i think that's as good an argument in the opposite direction. and that concludes my feelings on organized religion, i think.

as far as the question of faith and belief. i've always fared more on the side of logic. i like to find a reasonable explanation for various phenomena, and if you look at the bible, you can kinda match it up to the scientific findings. so, god created the world in 7 days, impossible, of course. but who's to say that the perception of time wasn't just skewered. that the 7 days in genesis is really just representative of the millions of years of evolution, ending with the existance of man. (admittedly, that's something i came up with while still trying to convince myself that it was the truth, but, hey, it works) the bible, as i see it, is a work of fiction, based on the perceptions of the people who wrote it, at a time when science wasn't yet able to explain most of it. the problem with the whole debate is the sheer impossiblity of it all. i find it ridiculous to not believe that there are other forms of life as we know it in the universe, the big question of course being, where does it end? maybe the universe is expanding, but at the end of that, then what? i can totally understand the human need to create some mythical creature to explain it all, but the fact remains, there is no explanation.

so, in conclusion, there is no conclusion. personally, i'm gonna live my life in a way that i think is right, but i won't expect anything after i die. and if i ever have kids, i'll let them form their own opinions, hopefully i won't poison their minds too negatively, but since it's highly unlikely that i'll have any, that's kind of a moot point. and as far as whoever asked how we would raise our kids, i understand that it's human nature as, hmm, oh, an animal? to reproduce, at this point, i think it's socially irresponsible for me personally to have kids. i wish more people would realize that, and don't forget, make sure you get cremated because there's just not room for any more human waste. ok, i think i'm done now.

How does anybody address the age-old question of where in hell did all this come from? Talk all you want about evolution but you can't get something from nothing. At some point, you had to have had a creator - call him/her what you want - "God" perhaps?

What we create in the form of religions is a whole 'nother question. I refuse to believe that we are void of any after-life - that doesn't make sense to me and I look at things very logically. Btw I haven't done jack about it....yet.

I think what many people did in this thread is make the common mistake of taking what people said which is just their opinions and making it personal. What I said is not what I believe everyone should believe, it is what it was meant to be and that is MY opinion and only MY opinion. I believe in a higher being maybe but not this conventional GOD, why should I believe in something that was written about by men who never knew him.

What if I was to sit down an write a biography about Napoleon right now. Would you consider it factual? I'll take stories I heard passed down, some will be true most probably will not be true plus I never knew the man nor can I speak to anyone today who knew him.

It's preposterous to think that what is written about jesus can be factual. Look at actual evidence. The Bible was written quoting christ hundreds of years after his death. Who kept records of his writings? Jesus never wrote any notes nor any books or left behind the slightests diary or manuscript. His words taken from stories handed down by people, who were these people? No notes would be kept by the government or scholars who condemed Christ so people who worshiped him and loved him. These people who would wan Christ to go on forever so you add a little myth to this son of god. It just an old fashioned version of the game "telephone" Look at this board alone as an example of how one little rumoUr can blast off into a full blown catastrophy.

I am in no means saying do not believe in GOD, just don't beleive what is force fed to you. I do beleive or actually a better term is hope there is something more. How will I raise my kids? The same way I taught myself to always learn not one-side but several sides to a story and then use your own common sense to figure out the hidden truth. Free will, free thought is how I will raise my kids, not to believe what I believe of you believe but what they believe in their hearts and minds.

That is how I view it. Then take in account how they can know what GOD itself did to create the earth? We know for a fact that the earth is approx 6 billion years old, man is only a million years old or so. So how could GOD create the earth and the galaxy and one the last day create man?

I am agnostic. I don't know what is and don't pretend that I ever will until that moment comes. Those who believe in a religion hate to hear someone who doesn't believe question it. And, what happened to all of the people who didn't believe in, let's say, Christianity before Christianity existed? What happened to all of those hundreds of thousands of people who didn't even know of this religion called, "Christianity"?

Not only that, but religion is all about control. Just as the federal government was organized to control the masses, and schools were instituted to socialize humans, just like the city council in your small town...all to make sure everyone is living by the majority vote. The same thing goes with religion...everything... the power-trips, the back-stabbing, the scandal, the superiority complex, and mass control.

I do, however, believe that religion does have some place in humankind. We, by nature, are curious and find peace in answers. Religion provides that. And, hope helps wounds heal. Mind over matter. Believing in something so strongly can help you mentally overcome obstacles, which in turn affects your physical ability to overcome it.

But, I'm glad to be in a place where at least some people see religion in a similar light as me. I was beginning to believe that I was the only one who didn't have anything to believe, you know, just for the sake of having something to believe. ;)

Well, I took an anthopology class in college and I can tell you that I don't really find solid proof in science either. The theories sound a little more possible, however. I don't know. What science knows is only guestimated from about 30% of skeletal remains of apes. And although we have a lot in common with apes, we also have, I think it was 98% similar DNA to mice. So take that for what it's worth. Science....religion....the are no real answers, yet.

For those who believe and take the bible for what it is, I have a question for you. I have asked this question, along with the two in my first post, to many people but have never gotten a straight answer.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but after the flood there were only eight people left on the Earth. I believe these eight people were Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their wives. Since they were the only poeple left it was up to them to repopulate the Earth. In order to do this they would have to commit incest. I believe it is a proven fact that incest causes retardation. So how is it that they were able to repopulate the world through incest. Wouldn't everyone be retarded?(No jokes please) Also, does this mean that incest was okay in God's eyes back then?

ok this doesn't really go along with the thread, but it does deal with an issue i have with god being a dumbass
wisdom teeth, wtf? ok we're born we get teeth, then they all fall out. then we get our adult teeth, so we have a mouth full of huge horse teeth and a tiny head. eventually our heads grow and our teeth look like they fit. then 10 to 15 years later after everything is all fixed, after years of braces and retainers we have our perfect smile. And now we have to fit 4 more huge fucking useless teeth in our mouths. god sucks. yesterday my two bottom wisdom teeth finally pushed through and i woke up with a mouth full of blood and swollen gums. how fucking stupid is this?
