FTL,

I am just trying to say that have you ever actually sat there and thought how these electrical impulses are transmitted into this message board, or the graphics in a movie from a pile of plastic, metal, and wires. I am just trying to show how amazing things are and sometimes you can't explain them but they work. Kins of like God you can't explain him, he just works and can change your life if you let him. You would think that I would have a better grasp then most condidering I work for the third biggest computer company in the world. Soon to be the first once the merger goes through.

Just becuase YOU can't grasp certain things doesn't mean that others can't.

The fact that all these keystrokes that I make magically appear on a messageboard, or the fact that people walked on the moon, or the fact that we can cure problems in 20 minutes that used to kill people aren't becuase of God, it's becuase of the human mind.

All of the great creations that you don't understand are understood by those much smarter than either of us. The creation of the earth, evolution, what that shit is inside an atom, every "mystery" of the world might be foreign to you, scientists continuously learn more every day.

I might not be able to explain how a computer works but I can see evidence of it working right in front of my face. I don't have faith that my computer is working, I have proof. No such proof with god.

Yes.

But I'm in the business of knowing how they work anyway.

Who says that Science and religion aren't compatible?

Not all scientists are athiests.

I am not a fan of any religion. I do however have one thought. How did cars, trucks space shuttles and the splitting of an adum? all come from the mind of a fish, That magicly decided one day to leave the water.

The thing that upsets me is people who belive will preach all day and night about the almight bullshit. But once you try to have a rational dicussion about the very good possability that there may not be a J C or Alaah or God of sun, they look at you like your crazy. The Egyptions had a god for everything that was around!! They had a god for anything they couldnt explain. Now 3 thousand years later we have condensed it to only 1 god. I just dont get it!!!!!

Actually I'd just answer with evolution. We've come a long way from fish. A fish has a brain smaller than a pea. Our brains are over 3 pounds.

And it doesn't take a brain that size to realize that.

You can say that people are to stupid to understand, and maybe you right, I doubt it. I just look at all the cultres around the world who believe prodmintley in one God. You can call him Alliah, Jeovah, God, or what have you, and each of those realigions has one great profit whether it be Jesus, Budda, of Mohamed. I just cannot believe that all these people are wrong, and we are some freak accident that happened. That all the right event happened to create life, out of some pool of life. Like I said you all are entile to you opinon, and I guess in the end if I am right you will know, and if your right I never will.

I dont think it is wise to completely dismiss religion. For example--You are wearing a watch, well sombody made the watch. You live on the planet, something made the planet. I feel that the rules made by organized religion are bs(do as I say not as I do).

In short , who really knows. Just be morale to yourself and leave other people alone to do what they want. In the end it will be you who has to answer or not answer to your own actions.

Again, it is the messenger that is the problem, not the message. People can be assholes - this includes people who use religion to BE assholes. FWIW there are also plenty of assholes who are against religion.

In my perfect world we could all discuss this, and we could all at the end agree to disagree.

Show me one person alive today that fully understands how every single aspect of the universe works. There isn't one. With a lifespan of an astronomical blink of an eye, and a size, compared to the whole universe, smaller than a subatomic particle, it's not gonna happen.

It's commonly accepted that Allah, Jehovah, and the Christian god are one in the same god, as all the religions spurned from the same set of values, in the same region of the world. The Eastern religions are COMPLETELY different. Different set of values, different afterlife, different everything. Do some research, dude.

One thing remains the same - humans made up an afterlife cause they're scared of death. That's why the idea of a higher power was invented all over the place - cause people are afraid of death. I can believe that every person, everywhere, even in different regions, is afraid to die. But that sure as fuck doesn't make me believe that god MUST exist because people thought of him everywhere to feel better about death.

As far as humans being an accident, if you think about it, we are FAR from an accident. Nature worked its ASS off to make us this way. We've come a HELL of a long way from primates. Again, try some research on evolution. Reference: australopithecine, then homo habilis, homo erectus, homo sapiens neandertalis, homo sapiens sapiens.

Diffrent set of values maybe you should do some research. All the religions are centerd around a common value of one god, and treat others as you would want to be treated. Even the Hindu(I think its Hindu) belief that we must continue being reborn until we reach nervania by acting right. I think were we screw up is that we try to make everyone worship by our religion of choice, or thinking that their religion is the only one. I think you must find the church that fits you, and your life style. You also stated that they differ in there afterlifes, but is not the fact that they all have an afterlife similair?

you are right, and that is the great thing about our country you can believe what ever you want to believe, and you can worship any god you wish. From God, Budha, Satian, or even the american dollar as so many do, but it is your choice. Like I said before if you right I will never know, but if I am right then you deffintley know who was wrong.

You know I do believe in evoltion, and the reason I do is that it says that God created the heavons, and the earth in seven days, but not until the fourth, or fifth day does it distinguih night from day. Who knows how long a day is to God, for him a million years could be a second.

Before the god-nuts jump on this, my answer...

Nature (evolution) - a series of genetic mutations that occur over thousands or millions of years to give a species an advantage over its predecessor.

god - Magical, invisible guy who waves his finger and stuff happens, also magically, with no scientific explanation necessary cause it just "happened".

I can't even FUCKING FATHOM how in this day and age, people can still believe in the latter.

Hey, I've got a question. Let's visit the Old Testament, if we can. God (remember, the character), said, "Let there be light." Uh, just curious, who was he talking to? If he's all-powerful and all. He requested the light? Who gave it to him?

I could also ask how in the FUCK there was any light, or how the FUCK there was DAY AND NIGHT when the sun wasn't created till the fourth day.

But I doubt I'd get an answer.

EDIT:
quote:

God created the heavons, and the earth in seven days, but not until the fourth, or fifth day does it distinguih night from day.

OH YES IT FUCKING DOES DUDE. Go get a Bible, Genesis is right in the front. When God saw the light and it was good, he separated the light from the darkness. He called the light "day" and the darkness "night". There was evening, then there was morning, marking the first day.

Don't get pissed becasue I love talking about this kind off stuff, but in response to your above staement where you there? How do you know? I think it all comes to a question of faith, and beliveing in something like you all have stated above beyond ryhme, or reason. I say just be a decent human bieng, and you should be ok.

The only thing that has truley affermied my beliefs is seeing my daughters born, and knowing the kind of love that God can have for his children.

quote:

And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning-the fourth day.

See it was not till the fourth day that a refernce to a seperation of time, or seasons.

Genisis only talks about the creation of the EARTH. The earth is roughly 5.4 billion years old. The universe is FAR older than that. We have scientific proof of stars being far older than the Earth. Stars give off light, so when God says "Let there be light".....THERE ALREADY WAS LIGHT! There was already light for an unfathomable amount of time already, so how do you figure that God created light only 5.4 billion years ago?

And I'm not pissed, I LOVE THIS SHIT. :D

And if either of our quotes are questions of faith, well then of course I don't believe a word of it. I just love using the Bible's power of self-contradiction in these debates. What better to argue my point than the book you believe in so much?

That's the great thing about being omniotent you can do anything. This thead is intresting yet ponitless becasue one side is not going to convince the other. Simpley ecasue are opinions are so preconcived to what we see to be the truth.

But dude that doesn't make sense. Him being all-powerful doesn't explain why he is saying he created light even though light already existed.

That would be like some geek inventing something and then someone twice his size comes over and knocks him out then takes credit for the invention. So by using your logic, because he was more powerful it's ok.

It's not my logic there are things that are unexplainiable. How did they date the universe? Did they use your infaluable science and carbon date the other stars? How do they know that the stars are really that far away? Did the use their odometer on their way to carbon date them? I am just messing with you. Somethings are unexplainable, and maybe we will find the answer in the afterlife, oh you don't believe in that stuff. Then maybe the aliens will expalin it to us when they come down, or do you not believe in aliens either? :) who knows :) >:)

Remember, according to these people, those stars weren't created till the 4th day. After the Earth, of course. Hell, there was an Earth before there was a sun.

Remember, I already explained why this is....

quote:

Because the Bible was written by people who DID NOT KNOW ANY BETTER - they thought the Earth was the center of the universe. They thought the sun and the stars went around the Earth. Hell, they didn't even know that the stars were more then little points of light in the sky, that they are actually as big or bigger than the sun, just millions, billions of miles away.
