d = 1 over p (I didn't know how to write this as an equation here)

It's alot to type in order to explain this formula, but just know this is how they SCIENTIFICALLY measure the distance to stars.

I'll try to copy & paste the explanation from some website.

EDIT - I have no clue what Cepheids are. But apparenty you were not serious so no copy&paste for you!

Just thought we should quote this again :) Riddle me this ftl...... You rather bank on the notion that eventually it will be discovered that man (or woman) can create something from nothing, than to believe that there is a Creator?

I don't know which concept is more far-fetched to be honest. Logic, as we know it, doesn't support either case. And it's not a question of stupidity on anyone's part. Noone, as far as I know, has the power to understand this.

What do you mean, "something out of nothing"? Do you mean can man create a planet or a tree or something else natural? Well by definition, man can't create anything natural or else it's not natural anymore.

But what man can and has created, is electricity, and nuclear power. Those things were always there, but man has found a way to harness it. Eventually man will be able to harness static electricity in the atmosphere, and make engines that don't need gas. Man has found ways to clone cells and create life. People are able to use nature around them and make something out of it.

Human kind fucking rocks. The human mind can create anything. Anything that Mother Nature, or God dishes out, man can overcome.

Thousands of miles of water, millions of miles of space, earthquakes, fires, floods, any other natural disaster, mankind has found a way to beat nature.

Therefore:

Man = better than God.

I mean how did the beginning happen? The very beginning. What/who started it? From what? Was there a time when there was absolutely nothing? Who can create something from absolutely nothing*? No gabeesh. Is the concept of time man-defined? Where's Al when I need him?

* Judging by some of these responses maybe some people can ;)

Why do you think that someone has to cause everything, and nothing can just by random chance. That's evolution. Just chance. Now I understand, you think that SOMETHING had to be there before evolution could take hold. Why does a person or a thing have to have created that with forethought. Why can't it just have been a random chemical reaction.

That, in my mind is more logically than the Wizard of Oz deciding "Hey, I'm bored, I think I'm going to create existence today. It'll be cool"

When Cancer begins in someone's body, does that mean that someone started it? Couldn't it just be random chance? Does it always have to be become someone smoked, or sat in the sun too long?

Sometimes things just happen because they happen.

The simple fact we cant' comprehend things is how the Powers That Be managed to keep their power through God. If they can't explain something (E.g. day into night, eclipses, etc.) say a god did it and leave it at that. No one could argue. If your leaders don't know the answer to something, what good are they as leaders. But if they have an answer (as shitty as it is), it eases people's fears.

For thousands of years we didn't know how day and night came into existence. We thought a guy carried it with a chariot. Now we know better. How do you know that in a few years we WON'T discover answers to questions you don't know.

I never said no such dang thing. I have questioned the creation that occurred at the very beginnings of time. A "chemical reaction" just occurred? What chemicals? Where did they come from? They always were there? I find it easier to believe that an intelligent being, far superior to us, always was, rather than chemicals; chemicals that one day would react and bang out a universe.

Wow...gotta get me some of them chemicals.

i just read this over the weekend:
when fredrick the great asked his physician for proof that God exists, he was satisfied whith the reply "the proof that GOd exists is that the jews exist."

mak twain also wrote, in the late 19th cent.: "the jews consist of but 1% of the human race. it suggests a nebulous dim puff oof stardust lost in the blaze of the mily way. properly the jews ought hardly be heard of ; but he is heard of, has always been heard of. he is as prominent on the planet as any other people...he has made a marvelous fight in this world, in all the ages; he has done this with his hands tied behind him...the egyptian, the babylonian, and the persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, thn faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the greek and the roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now or have vanished. the jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was...all things are mortal but the jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. what is the secret of his immortality?"

i don't want to convert anyone, by no means, but these were none-jews who said this.

Religion was invented in the middle ages when life was hard. Well maybe not invented, I'm sure there was some mysticim around before that.

Religion exists so that people without hope can have some. It's that simple.

I don't understand, in this day and age, with the knowledge we have about evolution and science, how anyone can think that a God created this world.

Nature is all powerful, not some being that doesn't exist.

Have any of you really considered what it would take for that supposed life giving ooze that created life. Not only would you need the right chemicals, but now scientist believe that you would need to have a moon like ours to stablize the planet. Infact the moon is currently moving further, and further away and evintually will be so far away that it's gravity will no longer keep eart stablize on it's axis and our season will go out of wac. But will that matter when we all die we go no were right? So any way in looking for life on other planets not only are they now thinking that they must find a planet with the right elements , or possible this magical ooze that created life here, but with a moon, or something of that nature to control the season, and stablise the rotation of the planet on its axis. you can say that it is all freak chance and that we evolved from monkies, but all the things need to create this supposed mircale seem a little far fetched to me. What are the chances of the right elements combining. You want proof of God there is one place in the bible that say's if you want to test him he will respond. If you pay your tiding you will be rewarded.

Who said man will ever discover the reason for it all? If I'm going to bank on anything, it's that we are - here's the important part - TOO SMALL AND DO NOT LIVE LONG ENOUGH to ever find out such things.

But again, just cause we are infinitesimal, stupid animals, doesn't mean that there isn't a REAL reason for it all. Humankind's stupidity is what gave birth to higher powers in the first place. Our technology will only get us so far before our lifespans and size limit us. There won't be an answer.

quote:

Couldn't evolution be the mechanism God used to create life?

Sorry, the Bible clearly states that Adam was made from dirt and Eve was made from one of Adam's ribs. No mention of primate descendants.

quote:

Where did God come from Donny? did he suddenly appear one day?

Don't you know that their answer is "he was always there" because they don't have a real answer?

Anyway, the universal theory I go with is the cyclical unvierse. In other words, the Big Bang didn't just come out of nowhere. There is a theory that in time, the gravity of the universe will pull it together into a "Big Crunch".... all matter and energy will compact into one single point, then it explodes, a new Big Bang, and it all starts over. So really it could just be 20 billion years since the last Crunch, not really the age of the entire universe at all. If that's the case, the true origin of it all will probably never be known.

Hey, Donny, do you believe that your god oversees the lives of alien worlds as ours?

Sure he said that. That is all, he said that.

Religion exists because as we evolved we needed to believe their was something better than what we were dealing with. Life sucked in the middle Ages; think about what it was like before that. Scavenging for marrow, it's a wonder we survived.

Nature is all-powerful, look what's happening with the ozone layer. We're killing ourselves and no one gives a shit. Nature corrects itself, and it will correct us.

Dinosaurs were here for hundred's of millions of years. We've been here for a pretty short time--why are we so arrogant to think we have some divine right to this planet.

I believe any introductory biology text gives some evidence (from some famous experiment, i forget the name) of how this "ooze" could have formed during the earth's early stages of formation. I've never heard of the "lunar theory" concerning a moon as a prerequisite to life's conception. Where did you read this? I'd be interesed in checking it out.

JackDan, your theory has a hole. The Earth isn't stable on its axis anyway. The poles do rotate. As in, right now the North Pole points at Polaris. In a thousand years, it won't. The pole rotates with about a 25,800-year cycle.

In other words, the Earth is wobbling as it rotates. But at a period of 25,800 years, no one will ever notice.
