The hopes of millions of aging Trekkies that their revered movie/TV franchise would be revived got a boost today (Friday) when Daily Variety reported that Paramount has signed J.J. Abrams (Mission Impossible III) to produce and direct an 11th Star Trek feature. The trade paper said that the screenplay, to be written by MI3's Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, will concern the first meeting of James Kirk and Mr. Spock at the Starfleet Academy and their first mission. In effect, it revives a project called Star Trek: Beginnings that produced a script by Erik Jendresen. It was unclear what, if any, role longtime Star Trek executive producer Rick Berman would play in the new project.

The New York Times Wrote:Student Is Held in Terror Case
By BRENDA GOODMAN
Published: April 21, 2006
ATLANTA, April 20 — As part of an investigation that the federal authorities describe as ongoing and international in scope, agents with Atlanta's Joint Terrorism Task Force have arrested a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student on a charge of material support of terrorism.
On March 23, a grand jury indicted the student, Syed Haris Ahmed, who attends Georgia Tech University. Mr. Ahmed, who was born in Pakistan but is a naturalized American citizen, was charged with undisclosed violations of two sections of the United States Code: Section 956, which deals with conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim, or injure persons or damage property in a foreign country; and Section 2332b, which covers acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.
Mr. Ahmed pleaded not guilty. He is being held in an undisclosed place without bond and is being represented by Jack R. Martin, a local criminal defense lawyer.
A man who answered the phone at the home of Mr. Ahmed's family in Dawsonville, Ga., said only: "Please do not call. We have no comments."
Two court documents in the case, the indictment and a sworn statement from Mr. Ahmed waiving a court appearance, were unsealed by a judge today after news outlets in the Atlanta area, including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV ran reports on Mr. Ahmed's detainment.
In an interview with the newspaper, Mr. Ahmed's mother and sister said they did not know why he was being held. They said he had told them the charges were tied to a video of a building, which he described to them as "not an important building," that he posted on the Internet.
Gregory Jones, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Atlanta office, provided little information about the case at a news conference Thursday evening.
"This case will be very seminal to those goals we've set to thoroughly investigate any information brought to our attention," Mr. Jones said. "We want to get it well before the point that somebody puts a bomb in a car."

In this thread we will all throw out ideas we have for 'niche' boards. I will keep a list of them here in the first post as we progress. Once we have about 10 or so good ones we'll narrow down to 5 and then to 3 and then to 1 by using the polls and that will be our 'fake' board.
If you can use the acryonym CDIH in the description of your idea it'll be even better as we wouldn't need to worry about the domain name being a problem.

i have no idea when they actually start
the pacers suck
i'd like to see nets vs pistons, shaq is old and kinda sad to watch, has been for at least the last year, but people (reporters/writers) are finally writing about it
kobe or lebron should be mvp, i don't care which, flip a coin
i like the 3 seed going to the lower of the division champs, even it they have a lower record then the 4th seed. if its just going to go by straight record then you might as well not even recognize the divisions and just lump them all in one big conference
tim duncan seems too unhealthy with his feet for the spurs to take it all this year, but who knows.
i'll save some of you the trouble
"OMG people watch basketball. outrageous!"
"the nba sucks"

So Oliver Stone is directing a movie about 9/11 <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://imdb.com/title/tt0469641/">http://imdb.com/title/tt0469641/</a><!-- m -->
It's not as much about the attacks as it is about two people who were trapped under the rubble after the attacks, this is the plot outline:
Quote:In the aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster, hope is still alive. Refusing to bow down to terrorism, rescuers and family of the victims press forward. Their mission of rescue and recovery is driven by the faith that under each piece of rubble, a co-worker, a friend a family member may be found. This is the true story of John McLoughlin and William J. Jimeno, the last two survivors extracted from Ground Zero and the rescuers who never gave up. It's a story of the true heroes of that fateful time in the history of the United States when buildings would fall and heroes would rise, literally from the ashes to inspire the entire human race.
I figured it would be about 5 years before a major motion picture was made, theres been a couple tele-films on the subject. It was pretty much a given that Oliver Stone would be chomping at the bit to be the first director to step up. I hope he doesn't try to work in any of his conspiracy theories into this though...

is bush the worst president ever?
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.rollingstone.com/news/profile/story/9961300/the_worst_president_in_history">http://www.rollingstone.com/news/profil ... in_history</a><!-- m -->
its kinda long but covers a lot. it doesn't seem completely biased to me, but i'm sure someone will think it is, especially since its in rolling stone
some parts i found interesting
Quote:According to the Treasury Department, the forty-two presidents who held office between 1789 and 2000 borrowed a combined total of $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions. But between 2001 and 2005 alone, the Bush White House borrowed $1.05 trillion, more than all of the previous presidencies combined.
Quote:But no president before Bush has allowed the press to disclose, through a close friend, his startling belief that he was ordained by God to lead the country.
Quote:Bush's alarmingly aberrant take on the Constitution is ironic. One need go back in the record less than a decade to find prominent Republicans railing against far more minor presidential legal infractions as precursors to all-out totalitarianism. "I will have no part in the creation of a constitutional double-standard to benefit the president," Sen. Bill Frist declared of Bill Clinton's efforts to conceal an illicit sexual liaison. "No man is above the law, and no man is below the law -- that's the principle that we all hold very dear in this country," Rep. Tom DeLay asserted. "The rule of law protects you and it protects me from the midnight fire on our roof or the 3 a.m. knock on our door," warned Rep. Henry Hyde, one of Clinton's chief accusers. In the face of Bush's more definitive dismissal of federal law, the silence from these quarters is deafening.

Report: Deal Made For DAVID LEE ROTH To Be Replaced On CBS RADIO - Apr. 19, 2006
According to Hits Daily Double, CBS Radio's Joel Hollander has made a deal with XM Radio to replace David Lee Roth with Opie and Anthony. Look for the High Voltage duo to return to the terrestrial airwaves on CBS' N.Y., Philly and Dallas' Free-FMs as well as WBCN Boston, WNCX Cleveland, Pittsburgh's K-Rock and West Palm Beach's The Buzz. They will also continue to be heard on XM channel 202.
The Associated Press reported last week that Roth has rarely hit the right notes since his January debut on New York's WFNY-FM (billed as Free-FM) and six other CBS Radio stations. In a recent broadcast, Roth claimed he was bombarded with four management letters in five days about content and predicted his show could be finished before May.
Several of his on-air sidekicks were dumped as the program struggled to find its groove. Roth disappeared from the airwaves for two days amid the turmoil.
