War plan calls for up to a quarter million troops - Will you answer the call?
Posted by: JerseyThunder - 11-10-2002, 01:43 AM - Forum: The Pit - Replies (10)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Pentagon plan for invading Iraq, should the new U.N. arms inspection effort fail, calls for a land, sea and air force of 200,000 to 250,000 troops, officials said Saturday.

President Bush, who has publicly acknowledged having received a war plan without mentioning details, approved it prior to the U.N. Security Council's vote Friday to force Iraq to disarm, The New York Times reported Saturday on its Web site.

The president has not, however, ordered the Pentagon to carry out the plan. He will wait to see whether Iraq accepts and abides by the terms of the U.N. resolution. If arms inspections go forward without interference, a decision to go to war could be put off for several months, officials have said.

War planning goes on, however, to ensure that the military is ready to act if commanded to do so by Bush.

Several White House officials reached Saturday declined to comment on the Times report that Bush has approved the plan, or on other details.

Pentagon planners had considered an approach that would have used 100,000 or fewer troops, but they settled on a much larger force favored by Gen. Tommy Franks, head of the Central Command that would run any war in Iraq, said defense officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Bush said Friday he prefers a peaceful approach to disarming Iraq but if that proves futile the military is prepared to "move swiftly with force" to ensure the regime of Saddam Hussein is stripped of its weapons of mass destruction and its ability to produce more.

The Times report said Pentagon officials are still working on some details of the war plan, but the basic approach is to begin with an air campaign, then quickly seize bases in northern, western and southern Iraq from which U.S. and allied forces could operate. A key early objective would be to cut off the Iraqi leadership in Baghdad in hopes of a rapid collapse of the government.

A major uncertainty, however, is whether Saddam would order the early use of the chemical and biological weapons that American intelligence believes he retains in defiance of previous U.N. disarmament demands.

As previously reported, a major strategic aim of a war in Iraq would be to avoid causing major damage to civilian infrastructure such as water and electricity supplies. The United States hopes that by focusing the war on Saddam's ruling elite it can avoid an anti-U.S. backlash.

The Times reported that Saddam is preparing thousands of civilian volunteers to fill "martyrs' brigades" and sacrifice their lives to bombs and advancing troops. Some of these volunteers would hope to slow the American-led offensive by acting as suicide bombers or fighting in neighborhood defense squads, but their true strategic goal would be to generate anti-American feelings in the region.

The Pentagon already is moving forces into position to ensure that it will be capable of launching swift strikes into Iraq, should Bush decide on war. The Navy has two aircraft carriers within striking range of Iraq and two more are scheduled to arrive in the area next month. The Air Force says it is preparing to deploy B-2 stealth bombers to the central Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia, where they could operate from special hangars now under construction. Other Air Force warplanes are in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and elsewhere in the Gulf.

In addition to thousands of Air Force and Navy personnel active in the Gulf region, the Army and Marine Corps already have thousands of ground troops in the area and additional equipment and supplies are heading there.

  Military prejudice?
Posted by: Maynard - 11-09-2002, 06:32 AM - Forum: The Pit - Replies (21)

I really think this bothered me, so I'm gonna share it to hear your ideas.

I'm driving home tonight, and stop at 7-11 for blueberry creme coffee (ok, not really, but that's funnier than saying water) and theres a group of about 10 late teen early 20's kids. Of course, as soon as I pull up, they all have to run inside at that moment to make their purchases. Walking around the store a bit, I was able to tell, at least some of them were drunk. So there's 2 guys in line in front of me. The one kid buys a pack of cigarettes, and he gets carded. No problem, he's over 18. The second kid (who was black, that has relevance in a second) asks for 2 packs of those little cigar treats that taste fruity. The guy at the counter (who was of some middle eastern india? descent) asks him for ID. The kid takes out his ID and the guy refuses him because it's a MILITARY ID!!! He tells him they're not allowed to accept them. Well why the fuck not?? The kid has a good physique, is wearing USMC sweatpants, and a sweatshirt that says Marines all over it. The kid starts giving the guy shit about it and saying why not. When he walks away (empty handed), he's mumbling, and mentions race, AND being in the military.

So tell me this, why did the "Indian" guy refuse him? The kid was obviously in the military and was over 18. Was it because he was black, or because he was in the military? I was actually going to buy them for the kid, but like I said, a few of his friends had alot to drink, and I didn't want to be in the middle of it for something so minor. Or was it? That's my real question.

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to paint a good picture of the episode.

  Ross report for 11-09-02

Ross Report -- Nov. 8, 2002
Greetings from under the 200X black Resistol hat while enjoying a few days in the Florida sunshine in beautiful Sarasota.
Random thoughts and opinion:

RAW was a solid effort from Boston, and seemed to me to be an improvement over last week's broadcast. This Monday's broadcast from Cincinnati should be an even better show as is usually expected for the final RAW before a pay-per-view. RAW is definitely getting better.

In my opinion, SmackDown! was a very good show and had some excellent in-ring product with the possible exception of the Al Wilson material, which may have been a little long for my taste. Overall, however, SmackDown! told some excellent stories and was fun to watch.

Several more matches for the Nov. 17 Survivor Series from the sold-out Madison Square Garden will probably be added to the lineup this week on RAW and SmackDown! The card looks to be good on paper and should result in a very solid pay-per-view.

The Kurt Angle Classic is this weekend in New Orleans. Kurt and Brock Lesnar will both be attending; however, Lesnar will compete in Champaign, Ill., on Saturday, and Peoria, Ill., on Sunday, while Angle will be off to nurse his sore back.

Angle and Lesnar are both working through knee problems. Kurt will eventually need to have his knee 'scoped while Brock needs to rehab himself back to 100 percent from a PCL tear.

Goldust has the flu and may not be able to wrestle this weekend.

RAW Superstars included on WWE's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade float will be Triple H, Hurricane, Victoria, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Sgt. Slaughter, Coach, Mr. McMahon and yours truly.

WWE Fan Club members at Survivor Series will participate in a breakfast with Rob Van Dam, Booker T, Torrie Wilson, Goldust, Hurricane, Spike Dudley, Rey Mysterio, Chris Nowinski, Jamie Noble and Nidia. This will be held the morning of Survivor Series.

Shawn Michaels this Saturday will launch tickets going on sale in Dallas for our Dec. 3 event in the American Airlines Center.

Kevin Nash will be in Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 16 for a RAW ticket on-sale.

Several WWE Superstars were interviewed by CNN Monday in Boston for a piece that airs tonight (Friday) at 10 p.m.

Australian Nathan Jones is in the midst of his extended tryout with WWE. The 6-foot-10, 300-pounder has a ton of potential but is still very green and in need of more quality ring time. We really like Nathan's attitude and willingness to learn.

Must be a slow news week on the Internet when the rumor mill addresses Scott Steiner's contract terms (mostly erroneously) and that agent Terry Taylor has not signed his contract.

I also learned on the 'net that Kurt Angle was going to work less days in 2003, down to his regular scheduled four days on and three days off, which is what he has been doing the vast majority of the time. Not sure this is "news," but it was reported.

Congratulations to HWA's Les Thatcher on his recent marriage to longtime girlfriend Alice. Good luck, Alice! (Only kidding.)

When will the trade sending the Big Show to SmackDown! be finalized?

I am curious to see what sort of match Trish Stratus and Victoria have at Survivor Series with hardcore rules. It will certainly be physical.

Mark Henry is getting his ankle 'scoped today in Birmingham, Ala., by Dr. Jim Andrews.

Maven, who looks to be a RAW talent now, still has not recovered from his ankle injury but is close.

Rey Mysterio will probably get his knee 'scoped sometime in December.

Billy Gunn has regained some feeling in his arm and will return to Birmingham in about a month for another examination.

It is now believed that Mark Jindrak sustained significant ligament damage when he dislocated his ankle and could be out of action six months.

The Undertaker is still in need of elbow surgery and is also having problems with his lower back, the SI joint.

Al Snow is working through a sore knee, probably a torn PCL ligament, which he sustained a number of years ago.

Bubba Ray Dudley and Test are both experiencing lower back pain but are working through the discomfort. Both are being scheduled to be examined.

Jazz is back in the ring and looks to be about 30 days away from returning from ACL surgery.

Rhyno seems to also be about a month to six weeks away from returning to the ring full time.

OVW wrestler Nick Dinsmore will have a 'scope to repair his torn meniscus knee ligament.

All other injured WWE Superstars are progressing on schedule based on their doctors' reports.

Hulk Hogan's upcoming autobiography is getting a great deal of press within the book world. It will be on shelves in a few days.

And the question remains, can Lesnar F5 the Big Show?

Lots of money and expertise being expended for the construction of the first-ever Elimination Chamber.

The King's autobiography is still scheduled to hit bookstores in December. Having read a great deal of this one already, this should be a fun read for all, especially longtime fans.

Lots of positives slowly beginning to develop on RAW and SmackDown! Just my opinion, but I like what I'm seeing from Test & Stacy Keibler, William Regal & Lance Storm, Booker T and RVD in single competition, all the female talents, Chris Jericho and Christian as World Tag Champs, Bubba and Jeff Hardy together, Triple H, albeit a popular superstar, as the lead antagonist on RAW, and Kane who continues to evolve on Monday nights.

SmackDown! highlights include the great work done by the Guerreros, Edge & Rey, Angle & Chris Benoit, Matt Hardy's new persona, John Cena's development, Brock Lesnar's slow evolution as a fan favorite allowing our fans to make the final decision much like Stone Cold a few years ago, Albert's improvement and the exciting cruiserweights. As we have discussed before, we are in the process of building new main-event-level Superstars, with several deserving talents being provided excellent opportunities to advance. Your guess as to who will make it to the next level is as good as mine, but I can say, without a doubt, that the shelves are not empty. Next year looks to be a breakout year for many young talents. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

My OU Sooners have a tough challenge awaiting them Saturday in College Station, Texas, against the always dangerous Texas A&M Aggies. Oklahoma is a nine-point favorite but this will be a very hostile environment before 80,000 plus at Kyle Field. This is a must-win situation for the Sooners, but they have been playing very well, and I hope they can take care of business against their Big 12 South adversary. Expect a physical, Slobber-Knocker of a football game.

Take care of yourself and count your blessings. See you Monday in Cincinnati.

J.R. (Boomer Sooner!)

A blonde goes in to the doctor’s office for a pregnancy test. A short time later, the doctor returns with the results. "Yes, ma’am, you’re pregnant!" he announces, beaming. The blonde is stunned. "Oh my god," she says, "is it mine?"

Stupid homeless people - This is why your homeless
Posted by: PatCooper - 11-08-2002, 10:48 PM - Forum: The Faggy Artistic Forum - Replies (20)

Today on the way home from work. I'm riding the staten island ferry. Everyone is standing outside getting ready to get off and this homeless fellow yells out" Did anyone lose some keys?" So of course the majority of people start checking to see if they did. This one gentleman replys "I did" "Their mine". So the homless man starts to make his way to this guy. Gives him the keys and asks him "Do you think you can give me a buck for em?" A dollar??????? Stupid ass... You could have asked for more than a dollar. The guy would have given you anything for his keys back. This is why your homeless you have no concept of money and the value of it. What are you gonna buy for a dollar dummy?
