I'm pulling for the D-Backs. They're one of those teams with a lot of great true professionals. They aren't necesarily flashy or loud, but they play solid fundamental baseball.

Let me take this little paragraph of mine from the Baseball Predictions Thread started before the season.

quote:

2001 WORLD SERIES
Arizona over NY Yankees in 7

2001 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS
Arizona Diamondbacks

Thats right Arizona Diamondbacks, bet you wont hear that anywhere else. I love the Johnson-Schilling combo, where if they get into the Playoffs that will be a hard thing to stop. Plus they have one of the best closers in the game in Mantei. I expect a come back season from Matt Williams. They can use another bat out there, and with the money that Jerry Colangelo has, Im sure if they are in contention, they can get it. Sure its a Darkhorse pick, but its better than saying the Yankees

Thank you.

Francine Banger, WOW that's a pretty good prediction, u should work for SI. they're usually wrong..but THERE IS NO WAY the diamond backs have any chance against the YANKS..they are just too good! they have more exprience and they are just simply The Yankees.

Great, another chance for us to see FB pat himself on the back. Great prediction, now shove it down our throats :)...Mantei does suck though lol.

Ill be patting myself on the back even more when the Diamondbacks win this thing.

I wouldnt count them out. Pitching is what wins in the Playoffs, and I dont even think the Yankees are going to be able to get to Johnson and Schilling, who could pitch 5 out of the 7 games.

Throw in the fact the D-Backs have Home Field Advantage. Yeah I know the Yankees are a Great Road team, but I like my chances with the D-Backs playing a Game 7 at the BOB rather than Yankee Stadium.

Alternating Home Field NL and AL every year has to be changed. If Seattle would have played the Braves in the World Series, Seattle would have been 26 games better than the Braves but not have Home Field.

the 2000 World Series might have turned out a little different if the Team that was 7 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees got to start off the series at home rather than on the road.

Now that it looks like the Yanks will once again go to the Series, I think them and the Dbacks should be a good match up. Then again, I say that every year and the Yanks end up raping whoever they play.

FB, I am not going to take anything away from Johnson or Schilling, but you mean to tell me you don't think the Yanks can get through them, however the D-bags will be able to mow down Clemens, Mussina, Pettite, and El Duque?!?! And after all that beat Rivera in the 9th. Come on, I give the D-bags alot of credit, but no matter where you look, the Yankees have the upper hand.

Of course I think the Yankees can take them, and they probably will.

All Im saying is dont count out the Diamondbacks. Dont expect that the Yankees are just going to show up and be crowned World Champs again like what would have happened if the Braves were in it. The D-Backs are going to give the Yankees a fight.

Another thing to look at is the fact that The Yankees are loaded with left Handed Hitters in their lineup from Martinez,O'Neil,Justice, plus its the better side for Williams and Posada.

Randy Johnson is nearly impossible to hit for left handed batters.

i think the D'Backs will win in 6, i hope the D'Backs show the yanks a thing or two, i don't know how the Yankees came back from a 2-0 series crisis to win, and then crush the M's, the D'Backs are going to stop the Yankees dead in there tracks

Dbacks will make a better match vs. yankees than any other NL team this year. As FB said, you could see Schilling & Johnson often in the series, and that negates some of the Yankee starting depth. In his only (?) appearance vs Yankees, Schilling was unhittable. Of course, Yankees do better vs fastball pitchers than junkballers.
Yankees will be favored, but it should be a good series.

as an added bonus, Mark Grace will now make his first WS appearance after may quality years in MLB.

I'm guessing that was when Curt was with the Phillies during an interleague matchup. I saw that game, what an arm.

As far as the Unit goes, the Yankees have had hits against him, so this, along with a prior seven-game playoff-losing streak (hey, did Opie say anything about Randy Johnson around, say, October 8?) proves he is human.

No disrespect to either, they're a double threat on the mound, and this could be the biggest WS challenge for the Yankees in this generation.

Can you name one pitcher on the Padres WS pitching staff?

I can. Hitchcock. Now he's a Yankee. So there.

Yankees in 5. Schilling wins the home opener, but the Bombers bring the series back home - and win it there, where it's meant to be won.

Joe, I couldn't have said it better, and with this 12-3 (so far) embarrassment of the M's, the yanks are ridin high going into the World Series....Get ready cause here come the Bombers!

7-1 'Backs as I type this...

Granted, this game would be the one win (and only one) I'd have given the Backs, but I wasn't expecting the Gashouse Gorillas now!

What's the pre-req for being a Diamondback? Do you have to be a lanky white guy? I've never really watched them until tonight and they are all skinny white guys. They can hit though.

Game 1 saw two streaks come to an end:

Jeter's 14-game World Series hit streak

Schilling's 3-game complete game streak

Anyways, this is where the Yanks pick it up. I say Big Unit goes eight innings, the score is TIED, and the Yanks win on a walk-off homer or double or whatever.

Your comments?

Holy shit did the Yankees get raped....I too have NEVER seen the D'backs play and was very impressed and worried about my Yanks. I hope they have the hearts to fight this one out because the D'backs are certainly not going to go away quietly...and with that said...GO YANKEES.

Even I didnt expect that ass-raping that i saw the D'Backs give to the yanks. That being said, i am not jumping to any conclusions because the yanks have shown time and time again to put this behind them. However, the yanks better win tomorrow against Johnson, or else it may get a little too close even for them.

My comment: When you say something, make some sense. Its cool to root for your team, but at least know what yor team's situation is. They are not the home team right now, so that walk off homer cant happen.

Not to also take this out on Joe Soprano's thread, but it kind of is related. I heard a cocky yankee fan on the radio today say that Jeter would hit a leadoff homer tonight, and that Yankees would kill Schilling. Only 1 problem...JETER DOESNT LEAD OFF!! Damn, at least know something people, it isnt too hard to pay attention to your team.

MY MISTAKE! I'm still replaying that Soriano dinger in my head, so sue me!

By the way, here's another World Series fun fact: the Yankees have now had only two (TWO?) losses in their last 18 WS games. Time to keep that number low - let's go!
