from cnn.com

Quote:In the latest attack, a suicide bomb exploded on a bus in a Shit section of Baghdad on Saturday afternoon.

...

Across the capital, three mortar rounds landed on a procession of Shit worshippers marching toward a mosque in northern Baghdad, wounding 17 civilians and two Iraqi soldiers, Iraqi police said.
...

On Friday, several explosions ripped through Iraq, leaving at least 27 people dead and five dozen wounded as Shit Muslims began observing Ashura, authorities said.

Shit mosques were the targets of three suicide bombings and a rocket strike, officials said, while another bomber targeted Iraqi security forces at a checkpoint.

...

Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie said the attacks were intended "to try to draw a rift, to dig a wedge between the Shit and Sunnis in this country."

...

In the Iraqi capital's western sector, at least two suicide bombers attacked a Shit mosque, wounding eight people, U.S. military officials said.

...

Fearing this kind of violence, authorities closed Iraq's borders during the Shit holy days.

some random google site
Quote:The focus of this article is to compare Shit with Sunni Islam.

The Islamic scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr, in his introduction to Allamah Tabatabai's Shit Islam, states, "the issues which .. arise [in a comparison of Shitism and Sunni Islam]

The early history of Shitism is still very obscure. Most of the expositions that have come down to us are the work of theologians, both Sunni and Shit

The Shit scholar, Allamah Tabatabai, as stated previously, sees the roots of Shitism in Muhammad's acceptance of Ali as his successor.

...

Shits, in contrast to Sunnis, accept the hadiths of Muhammad and the Imams, as being of equal importance and validity

...

Here is where the differences between the Shit and Sunni Hadith present a glaring problem.

Aside from differing inheritance laws, the Shit law or Sharia is largely similar to that of Sunni Islam.47 Yet for the Shits, a body of Hadith distinct from that of the Sunnis is the basis for religious ritual in which the Sunnis do not partake

Some of the other distinctly Shit beliefs and practices include taqiyah and mutah.52

Though this article has dealt primarily with the beliefs and practice of twelver Shits, there are also numerous other sects within Shitism such as the Zaydi, Isma`ili, Nizari, Musta`lis, Druze, and Muqanna`ah.

NBA: Comparing the 84/85 and 03/04 drafts - Youth Gone Wild!
Posted by: Sir O - 02-19-2005, 06:50 AM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (3)

So watching the rookie/sophmore game (which was lots of fun), it became painfully obvious that the NBA is trying to push hard the fact that they've got some great young talent. Of course, they do. Lebron James is just incredible, and following him is a long list of future stars. So I was looking back to the last time there was a real influx of talent, and wondering how this generation will compare.

1984: Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Charles Barkley, Alvin Robertson, Otis Thorpe, Kevin Willis, John Stockton
1985: Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Detlef Schrempf, Charles Oakley, Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Terry Catledge, A.C. Green, Terry Porter, Manute Bol, Gerald Wilkins, Arvydas Sabonis, Spud Webb

2003: LeBron James, Darko Milicic, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Chris Kaman, Kirk Hinrich, TJ Ford, Michael Sweetney, Jarvis Hayes, Luke Ridnour, Josh Howard, Kyle Korver, Marquis Daniels
2004: Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Shaun Livingston, Luol Deng, Andre Iguodala, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, JR Smith, Tony Allen, Beno Udrih, Chris Duhon, Trevor Ariza, Andres Nocioni

Of course, we won't be able to truly compare the two eras for at least another decade, but it's fun to speculate. How good are the last two draft classes?

Bruschi has a stroke - heres the story
Posted by: FoundryJJ - 02-18-2005, 05:34 PM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (12)

Right off the NFL.com site:

"BOSTON (Feb. 17, 2005) -- New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi suffered a mild stroke but is walking, talking and in good spirits, the team said.

Bruschi experienced temporary numbness, blurred vision and headaches on Feb. 16 and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

"It has been determined that these symptoms were the results of a mild stroke," team spokesman Stacey James said. "Tedy is in good condition and, as always, his spirits are high. He is walking and talking normally and stressed that he would like to thank everyone for keeping him and his family in their thoughts and prayers."

The Patriots said Bruschi could be released as early as Feb. 18. "

That really sucks. My father had a stroke, but he was 60 when it happened. Bruschi is only 32 or 33. Hope he'll still be able to play football.

 World of Warcraft
Posted by: Gooch - 02-18-2005, 03:22 PM - Forum: Über Geek Zone - Replies (3)

I don't plug games much. I tend to bounce from thing to thing...but my Xbox has been collecting dust for over a month and a half now b/c I have been playing and my interest has been kept by World of Warcraft. It's a massive online game, which unlike Dark Age of Camelot and Everquest...isn't a borefest or lose it's luster after a few levels.

NY Times wrote an article about it.

http://tech2.nytimes.com/mem....39C8B63

If anyone is interested, I'm on the Bloodhoof server, Alliance....by the name of Whiskeyjack. If you are looking for a good game to occupy your time, I recommend it highly. Very few games make it past a week or two with me.

Microsoft recalls X-Box power cords - and will replace them free of charge
Posted by: Goatweed - 02-18-2005, 03:18 PM - Forum: Über Geek Zone - Replies (4)

http://replacements.webprogram.com/en-us/index.asp

apparently there's some flaw in the original cords, and it poses a fire threat. anyway, it's free, so you might as well get one (if you need it - see the link for details).

Also, rumor has it that the X-Box 2 will be made public by the middle of this year, and plans are to make it available for purchase just in time for Christmas. Sounds nice, but the one thing that turns me off is there's talk of a Halo 2.5 that will be bundled with the new console and it's touted as being the "Halo 2 they wanted to make for the X-Box, but couldn't until now"- thus more or less signalling that backwards compatability will NOT be an option built into this new console. In other words, any game you really enjoy on your X-Box now won't be able to play on the new console.

Sony has incorporated backwards compatibility into the PS2 & said that PS3 will continue the trend.
