WASHINGTON and NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Radio announced today that the company has suspended Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, hosts of "The Opie & Anthony Show" and ceased broadcast of the show for 30 days, effective immediately.

XM Radio deplored the comments aired on "The Opie & Anthony Show" last week. At the time, the company strongly expressed its views to Opie and Anthony, and they issued an immediate apology.

Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.

As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to on XM. "The Opie & Anthony Show" appears on one of XM's explicit language channels (XL). Whenever a radio is tuned to an explicit language channel, the letters "XL" continuously appear on the screen. XM frequently mentions on its explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain listeners and tells how to "block" channels that feature this type of content. Channel blocking is available through xmradio.com or by calling 1-800-XMRADIO.

Quote:Shock jocks dropped over Asian slurs
CBS Radio pulls plug on ‘The Dog House with JV and Elvis’ after prank
The Associated Press
Updated: 7:30 p.m. ET May 12, 2007

NEW YORK - One month after the firing of radio host Don Imus for broadcasting sexist and racist gibes, a pair of suspended New York shock jocks have been permanently pulled from the air by CBS Radio for a prank phone call rife with offensive Asian stereotypes.

"The Dog House with JV and Elvis," hosted by Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, "will no longer be broadcast," CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said Saturday. CBS Radio dismissed broadcasting hall of famer Imus in April for his defamation of the Rutgers women's basketball team.

The cancellation of the show, nearly three weeks after the show hosts were suspended, was another indication of the increased scrutiny on radio hosts and the heightened management sensitivity to complaints in the wake of the Imus firing.

"This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming," said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Mateo declined any further comment on the "JV and Elvis" show, which had aired on WFNY-FM immediately after the shock jock pairing of Opie and Anthony.

Opie and Anthony also under fire
Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia return to the station's airwaves Monday after issuing their own apology for a segment on their satellite radio program where they laughed as a homeless man fantasized about raping Condoleezza Rice and Laura Bush.

Vandergrift and Lay made their comments one day after Imus' April 4 meltdown on his nationally syndicated program. The pair broadcast a call to a Chinese restaurant; the caller, in an exaggerated accent, placed an order for "shrimp flied lice," claimed he was a student of kung fu, and compared menu items to employees' body parts.

The initial airing of the call went unnoticed, but a re-airing of the segment after Imus's firing prompted an outcry from Asian-American groups. Vandergrift and Lay were initially suspended without pay, but Asian-Americans quickly demanded the same penalty applied to the much higher-profile Imus.

Mateo would not comment on the status of the DJs' contracts or whether they were still on the CBS payroll. Imus plans a $120 million (euro88.98 million) breach of contract suit against CBS Radio.

Sharpton back in the spotlight
As word spread about the fate of JV and Elvis, more than 100 people turned out for a Union Square rally to offer support for those two, Imus and other radio personalities under fire.

"It's not about whether you like what you heard or not," said Debbie Wolf, president of People Against Censorship. "I find censorship to be far more offensive than anything that was said."

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who played a major role in Imus' ouster, said Saturday that he wanted to meet with Hughes and Cumia's bosses at XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. over the rape comments on their show.

"My personal feeling is they should have already been fired," said Sharpton, who one night earlier had debated Imus producer Bernard McGuirk on the Fox News Channel. McGuirk was also fired from WFAN-AM.

McGuirk called Sharpton a "race-baiter" looking for attention when he led the campaign to fire Imus. Sharpton replied that Imus and McGuirk got what they deserved for making racist, sexist comments on the air.

This JV and Elvis shit is just a continuation of this fucking stupid Sharpton bullshit. The man is such a lack of an American. He is the future of facism, the face of a new black facism in this country, where white people must kneel before the power of hurting the feelings of the minorities in spite of the right to free speech.

This is such fucking bullshit, and this is the fucking problem with this Imus thing. Now, everytime someone is offended, they are going to pull the Sharpton card and be all "well, you did it to this guy, so why not do it to this guy." People are so fucking afraid to be hypocrites in this world. I would rather have a hypocrite who did the right thing than some arrogant fuck who steadfastly sticks to his guns and refuses to be wrong. That's the number one thing wrong with this country, starting with our fuck of a President, and working its way down; dumb fucks too proud of themselves and unwilling to be wrong.

  Big Lurch
Posted by: The Jays - 05-10-2007, 04:30 AM - Forum: Noise Pollution - Replies (6)

Quote:Big Lurch (born Antron Singleton c. 1975, in Fort Worth, TX, although some sources say Compton, California) is a rap artist currently serving a life sentence for murdering 21 year old female acquaintance Tynisha Ysais and eating parts of her body in April 2002 while under the influence of PCP.

During his music career, Singleton worked with such Bay Area rappers as Too Short, Mac Dre, RBL Posse, C-Bo, E-40, and New Orleans based Mystikal.

In April 2002, Singleton murdered Tynisha Ysais in her apartment while under the influence of PCP. Her boyfriend Thomas Moore testified that he and Singleton spent the evening prior to the murder smoking PCP, also known as Angel Dust.

The victim was found in her apartment by her friend Alisa Allen. Her chest had been torn open and a three-inch blade was found broken off in her shoulder blade. Teeth marks were found on her face and lungs, which had been torn from her chest. Eyewitnesses reported that when Singleton was picked up by police, he was naked in the middle of the street, covered in blood and staring at the sky. A medical examination performed shortly after his capture found human flesh in his stomach which was not his own.

On November 7, 2003, he was sentenced to life in prison. [1] He had been convicted of murder and aggravated mayhem the previous June after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity at the time of the murder. The court ruled that his intoxication and plea of insanity were not satisfactory reasons for committing the crime.

de la hoya vs. mayweather jr.
Posted by: Keyser Soze - 05-09-2007, 03:01 AM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (20)

so gonzo, if you still post here, i was wondering what your thoughts on the fight were.

it seemed to me, as a very casual boxing observer that de la hoya had won that fight. im guessing mayweather was more efficient with his punches, if thats what won him the fight.

or it was a fix, like most fights seem to be when they go to the cards.
