Prince Harry Apologizes For Nazi Costume
* Wore Nazi Uniform To Costume Party
Jan 13, 2005 8:44 am US/Eastern
LONDON (AP) Jewish groups and lawmakers criticized Prince Harry on Thursday for wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party, with one group urging him to visit the Auschwitz death camp, despite an apology from the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II.
The 20-year-old prince apologized Wednesday in a statement after a British newspaper printed a picture of him clutching a cigarette and a drink and wearing a swastika armband.
“I think a lot of people will be disappointed to see that photograph and it will cause a lot of offense,” said Michael Howard, leader of Britain’s main opposition Conservative Party.
“I think it might be appropriate for him to tell us himself just how contrite he now is,” added Howard, who is Jewish.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles expressed outrage and urged Prince Harry to travel to Poland later this month to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.
“There he will see the results of the hated symbol he so foolishly and brazenly chose to wear,” said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the center.
Prime Minister Tony Blair’s office was reluctant to get involved. “Clearly an error was made,” Blair’s official spokesman said. “That has been recognized by Harry, and I think it is better that this matter continues to be dealt with by (Buckingham) Palace.”
Jewish groups in Britain were more moderate in their criticism.
“The fact that the palace has issued an apology indicates that this was a mistake by the prince,” said Rabbi Jonathan Romain, a spokesman for the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain. “But having being given, the apology should now be accepted.”
A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said the costume “was clearly in bad taste, especially in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day” on Jan. 27. But he added: “The board is pleased that he’s apologized for the incident.”
The queen will commemorate the Holocaust and 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by inviting survivors of the Nazi death camps and British World War II veterans who liberated them to a reception at St. James’ Palace.
The picture of Prince Harry, the second son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, appeared in The Sun newspaper.
In the statement, Harry said he was “very sorry if I caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone.”
“It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize,” he added.
Harry, who plans to enroll this year at a military college, has long been known as the wilder of Charles and Diana’s two handsome sons, in contrast to his university-student brother Prince William, 22.
Harry, third in line to the throne, has been photographed drinking in London’s trendiest nightclubs and three years ago was sent by his father to observe a drug rehabilitation center after being caught smoking marijuana. In October, he scuffled with a paparazzi photographer outside a London nightclub.
A former Buckingham Palace spokesman said he believed Prince Charles was too easy on his sons.
“I’m sorry, the Prince of Wales, he’s a humanitarian and he does some terrific work, but I don’t think he has ... the right discipline over his children, particularly Prince Harry,” Dickie Arbiter told Sky News TV.

"Qns. Satanist catches hell
Nab 2 teens in pipe attack; prosecutor eyes hate-crime charge
BY TAMER EL-GHOBASHY, SCOTT SHIFREL and TONY SCLAFANI
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
Daniel Romano, bloodied but unbowed, still sports the ring, nails and inverted crucifix.
A blue-haired, Satan-loving man was pummeled with a metal pipe by a pair of God-fearing thugs as he strolled down a quiet Queens street, authorities said yesterday.
"Yo, Satan!" the hoodlums screamed before unleashing a hellish attack on 20-year-old Daniel Romano in Maspeth on Sunday, cops said.
Paul Rotondi and Frank Scarpinito, both 18, allegedly pounced on Romano, who wears black nail polish and an inverted crucifix symbolizing his rejection of Jesus, as he walked to meet his mother at a laundermat.
"They spread rumors around the neighborhood that I eat babies and go down to the docks, pick up hookers and kill them," Romano told the Daily News. "Ignorance often costs a lot of people their lives."
Romano, who suffered a gash to his head and a few bruises, claimed to be a member of the Manhattan-based Church of Satan, a nonreligious group that has thousands of members. But the controversial group's head "priest" told The News that Romano was lying.
Nevertheless, prosecutors said Romano's satanic beliefs are enough to justify charging his alleged attackers with a hate crime.
"They attacked this guy because they believe him to be a Satan-worshiper," Queens Assistant District Attorney George Farrugia said outside court. "They've had it in for this kid."
NYPD investigators said Rotondi and Scarpinito harassed Romano for more than a month before hunting him down on 72nd St. about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Jumping out of a Volkswagen Jetta, the pair allegedly bashed Romano in the head with a pipe and beat him with an ice scraper.
Rotondi, who is home-schooled because he is claustrophobic, denied the charges to cops.
"You are going to find my prints on there," he told cops at the 104th Precinct stationhouse, referring to the pipe. But then he insisted, "I did not hit anyone with it," authorities said.
Rotondi and Scarpinito, both of Queens, were arraigned on charges of second-degree assault as a hate crime. The teens pleaded not guilty and were being held on $5,000 bail.
They face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.
After the hearing, Rotondi's attorney, Sean McNicholas, ridiculed the hate crime charges.
"This is an abuse of the hate crime law," he said. "What's next - the nerds, the preppies ...? Where are you going to draw the line?"
Safe inside his mom's Middle Village home, Romano said he will continue studying "The Satanic Bible" and hopes to become a leader in the Church of Satan.
But Peter Gilmore, head priest of the Church of Satan, wants nothing to do with Romano. "He's totally lying and he's just pulling the police's leg," said Gilmore, adding that his church promotes individual power and does not advocate breaking the law.
"We generally laugh at people who walk around with black nail polish," he said.
THE DEVIL'S TRADEMARKS
* Inverted or upside-down cross necklace symbolizes a rejection of Jesus and Christianity.
* Pentagram ring adorned with image of goat's head inside five points, known as a baphomet, is symbol of Satanism.
* The black fingernails are a gothic fashion statement. "
So what do you guy think of this ? I know the kid. He worked at the store I work at and was fired last week. He's a good kid.....just poor upbringing and drugs is his only problem.

Mets Trying to Set Up Meeting With Delgado in Puerto Rico
By JACK CURRY
Published: January 11, 2005
Carlos Beltran called Carlos Delgado on Sunday, hours after Beltran agreed in principle to a seven-year, $119 million contract with the Mets. Now the Mets will try to reach out to Delgado when they visit Puerto Rico with Beltran later this week. David Sloane, Delgado's agent, said the meeting was still being worked out.
The Mets initially thought they would be able to sign Beltran or Delgado as a free agent, not both. But the fact that the Mets are poised to meet with Delgado indicates that they are still hoping they can add another high-priced free agent to join Beltran and Pedro Martínez.
Beltran, a center fielder who already sounds like a giddy Mets fan, said he was hoping that his call to Delgado would help bring him to New York.
"It would be seriously tremendous if we sign Carlos, too," Beltran was quoted as saying in the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia yesterday. "I would love it if that could be achieved because we are good friends, but I know he has to make the best decision for him."
An executive from one of the teams that is courting Delgado said the Mets had told Sloane that they needed to be financially creative to be able to sign Delgado. The executive guessed that the Mets were trying to unload Cliff Floyd, who has two years and $13 million left on his contract, and use the savings in the pursuit of Delgado.
But it is unlikely that the Mets will be able to trade Floyd unless they absorb some of his salary or trade him for a high-salaried player, which is what they were considering in discussions with the Cubs about Sammy Sosa. Those options would not do much to ease the financial weight of adding Delgado.
When Fred Wilpon, the Mets' principal owner, was asked last night if General Manager Omar Minaya had the clearance to try to sign Delgado, he did not directly answer and later said the Mets would make that decision as a group.
"I don't know," Wilpon said of the possibility of adding Delgado. "Omar is running the show. That's one of the people who he's thinking of, but he's got a lot of others."
Delgado's first choice was to play for the Yankees, but that was never a serious possibility. Now the Mets, the Baltimore Orioles, the Florida Marlins and the Texas Rangers are among the teams interested.
Delgado, a first baseman, has said he is looking for a four-year deal with an average salary of about $14 million. He has received offers in the range of $10 million a year. He batted .269 with 32 homers and 99 runs batted in for Toronto last year.
The Mets will introduce Beltran at a news conference at Shea Stadium this morning. They will hold another one tomorrow in Port St. Lucie, Fla., their spring home, as well as a third one Thursday in Puerto Rico.
When the Mets are in Puerto Rico, Wilpon and Minaya are likely to meet with Delgado and Sloane.

Quote:Rodeo in Salem gets unexpected song rendition
A man purportedly from Kazakhstan launched into a diatribe instead of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
By Laurence Hammack
The Roanoke Times
No one knows for sure who he was, that Middle Eastern man in an American flag shirt and a cowboy hat who was supposed to sing the national anthem at a rodeo Friday night in the Salem Civic Center.
But he sure shook up this town before leaving in a hurry.
Introduced as Boraq Sagdiyev from Kazakhstan, he was said to be an immigrant touring America. A film crew was with him, doing some sort of documentary. And he wanted to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" to show his appreciation, the announcer told the crowd.
Speaking in broken English, the mysterious man first told the decidedly pro-American crowd - it was a rodeo, of all things, in Salem, of all places - that he supported the war on terrorism.
"I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards," he said, according to Brett Sharp of Star Country WSLC, who was also on stage that night as a media sponsor of the rodeo.
An uneasy murmur ran through the crowd.
"And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq," he continued, according to Robynn Jaymes, who co-hosts a morning radio show with Sharp and was also among the stunned observers.
The crowd's reaction was loud enough for John Saunders, the civic center's assistant director, to hear from the front office. "It was a restless kind of booing," Saunders said.
Then the man took off his hat and sang what he said was his native national anthem. He then told the crowd to be seated, put his hat back on, and launched into a butchered version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" that ended with the words "your home in the grave," Sharp said.
By then, a restless crowd had turned downright nasty.
"If he had been out there a minute longer, I think somebody would have shot him," Jaymes said. "People were booing him, flipping him off."
Rodeo producer Bobby Rowe, who by then had figured out that he was the victim of some kind of hoax, had the man escorted out of the civic center. Rowe told him that he and his film friends had best leave right then.
"Had we not gotten them out of there, there would have been a riot," said Rowe, who has been bringing his Imperial Rodeo Productions to Salem for years.
As his wife, Lenore, put it: "It's a wonder one of these cowboys didn't go out there and rope him up."
Saunders agreed. "I was concerned for his personal safety," he said.
Once the film crew members and their star realized the severity of the situation, Bobby Rowe said, "they loaded up the van and they screeched out of there."
After apologizing to the crowd for being duped, Rowe was left to wonder who pulled such a hoax, and why. Months ago, he was approached by someone from One America, a California-based film company that was reportedly doing a documentary on a Russian immigrant, Rowe said.
The outfit asked if Sagdiyev could sing the national anthem at the rodeo in Salem. After listening to a tape, Rowe said sure.
By Saturday afternoon, Jaymes had observed that Sagdiyev looked a lot like the title character of "Da Ali G Show," a Home Box Office production that often catches its guests and audiences unaware and then records their reaction to "shock value" material such as Friday night's performance.
The show has a character named Borat from Kazakhstan, according to the HBO Web site.
Jaymes said she recalls that one of the five cameras was turned on her and others on stage, as if to catch their reactions.
"I looked at Brett and said, 'Why do I feel like I'm in the middle of a bad "Saturday Night Live" episode?'" Jaymes said.
As Rowe prepared Saturday for a second night of the rodeo, he was playing it safe on who would sing the national anthem.
"It'll be a tape," he said.
Some comments from Fark:
Quote:Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the humor. What was the point of trying to ruin everyone's fun night out with wife/family/significant other/ect?
Quote:hm i may be alone on this one, but i really don't think this guy is funny at all. i thought everyone here would be posting what a moron this guy is, but i was waaaaay off.
Quote:This isn't funny at all, it's just trying to taunt a bunch of rednecks at a rodeo into a blind rage. Don't come crying to me if one of them decides to clock you in the face.
Quote:He bashed Bush so he must be funny... right?
My guess is that if you think Tom Green is funny, you think this guy is funny.
Quote:You aren't alone, he's not funny. And this incident was pretty rude.
But I guess if you believe in your ideology badly enough it'll quash any last vestiges of good taste and common sense you might have left.
Quote:Why is it funny to wreck everybody's evening like this? Just to get their reaction? What a farking douchebag.
Quote:I don't see the humor. I see occasion to post the Attention Whore picture
