Who Can Donate Blood

A Few Basics

Basically, you can donate blood if you are 17 or older, weigh at least 100 pounds and are good health. Contrary to popular belief, senior citizen status does not disqualify you. THERE IS NO UPPER AGE LIMIT FOR DONATING BLOOD. Good health means you should have no cold, flu or sore throat symptoms. Your blood must contain an adequate iron level (which can be achieved through a well-balanced diet).

Guidelines

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS): You should not donate if you have participated in activities that put you at risk of acquiring the AIDS virus:
male homosexual contact
past or present IV drug abuse
exposure to blood or bodily fluids with someone who has AIDS symptoms persons with AIDS symptoms (including enlarged lymph nodes, fever, night sweats)

NOTE: Close contact is defined as activities that may result in exposure to blood and bodily fluids including semen and phlegm.

Blood Pressure: We test every donor to make sure his or her blood pressure is within the range we can accept. There are no restrictions if your blood pressure is controlled by medication.
Cancer: You may donate blood if you have had cancer and have been free of disease for five years or if you have had completely removed skin cancer (with the exception of Kaposi’s Sarcoma), that required only local treatment.
Ear Piercing and Tattooing: There is not waiting period if ear piercing is performed by the gun method and no infection occurs. You must wait one year after being tattooed.
Hepatitis: We cannot accept blood from anyone who has had hepatitis after age 10. If you have had close contact with someone who has had hepatitis, we must defer your donation for a year.
Medication: Prescribed medications don’t necessarily disqualify you. Our nursing staff can determine your eligibility during the medical history taken before you donate. Or you may call one of our donor centers in advance.
Menstruation: There are no restrictions. Pregnancy: You should not donate while you are pregnant or for the first six weeks after the termination of a pregnancy (i.e. delivery, miscarriage, abortion).
Surgery: Minor surgery requires that you wait until healing is complete. Major surgery requires a one year waiting period. If you aren’t certain which category applies, call one of our donor centers for information
