From NYTimes while I can get it:

EW YORK -- Victims from the attack on the World Trade Center -- many suffering from extensive burns -- began arriving at hospitals in New York City about an hour after two planes slammed into the twin towers, witnesses said Tuesday.

"Hundreds of people are burned from head to toe," said Dr. Steven Stern at St. Vincent's Hospital in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of lower Manhattan.

About 50 or 60 doctors and nurses were standing in scrubs and uniforms waiting for the next wave of ambulances to come in. The first wave arrived around 10 a.m. EDT, doctors said.

The entire entrance to the emergency room was lined with stretchers covered with white sheets.

Doctors said the victims mostly had burns.

"So far we've received a few patients, mostly second-degree burns," Dr. Gary Fishman at St. Vincents said. "We are expecting the brunt of the people to arrive soon."

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani told New Yorkers to remain in their homes or businesses, unless they are located south of Canal Street. People in the downtown area are advised to head north and clear out the streets.

"Remain calm and try to assist in the rescue effort and pray," Giuliani said. "The main thing is having these streets open so we can move people out of there."

Most of the early patients were being sent to New York University's Downtown Hospital and to St. Vincent's.

At about 8:45 a.m. EDT, a plane struck one the north tower of the landmark complex in lower Manhattan, and the building was soon engulfed in flames. Moments later a second plane struck the south tower.

Both towers of the complex collapsed, the first falling about 75 minutes later and the second crashing half an hour after that. The entire south end of Manhattan was engulfed in smoke and airborne debris.

"The whole of lower Manhattan is coated in half an inch of dust," Reuters reporter Daniel Sternoff said.

People were fleeing the area in a panic.

At St. Vincents, hospital staff appealed for blood donors in the street, Reuters reporter Ian Driscoll said. The line to give blood was over 100 people long.

"We expect smoke inhalation, trauma, and burns," Dr. Bernd Reisbeck said. "I expect we will be working non-stop for at least the next 24 hours."

Airplane Crashes Into Pentagon
FROM STAFF AND WIRE SOURCES

(CNN)

n airliner crashed into the Pentagon Tuesday, setting off a huge explosion and fire, and prompting the immediate evacuation of the headquarters of the American military, officials said.

"A plane hit the building," David Cook, director of Administration and Management at the Pentagon, the world's biggest office building.

Gray smoke billowed from the five-sided building. The more than 20,000 civilians and military men and women who work in the building streamed into the surrounding car parks, driven by blue and white strobe alarm lights and wailing signs.

Eyewitnesses told local television stations that a commercial airliner appeared to have smashed into the side of the building, which is near the Potomac River running through Washington and close to Washington National Airport.

All airline travel within the United States was suspended and President Bush was said to be on his way back from a visit from Sarasota, Fla., to Washinton.

It was not immediately clear whether Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was in the building at the time of the crash, which occurred near a helicopter landing pad at the southwestern side of the complex.

Lisa Burgess, a reporter for the Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, said she was walking in a corridor near the blast site and was thrown to the ground by the force of the blast. Sirens wailed as the whole building was evacuated.

The State Department was evacuated Tuesday due to a possible explosion or fire amid a rash of explosions in New York and Washington.

A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that the incident appeared connected with two plane crashes at the World Trade Center, an explosion at the Pentagon and the evacuation of the White House.

``Something has happened at the State Department,'' the source said. ``We don't know what yet. We hear it might have been a plane.''

Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Tuesday he would fly home to Washington after aircraft attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

"A great tragedy has struck our country. It will not affect the nature of our society. We will find out who is responsible for this and bring them to justice," Powell, who was in Lima to attend an Organization of American States meeting, told reporters.

"I will be returning to Washington shortly," he added. No further details of his travel plans were immediately known but a U.S. official said Powell would make an opening address to the meeting and fly home immediately afterwards.

Elsewhere around the country:

A large plane crashed Tuesday morning just north of the Somerset County Airport, 80 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, Penn. according to county emergency officials said.

The plane, believed to be a 747 jumbo jet, crashed about 10 a.m. about eight miles east of Jennerstown, according to county 911 dispatchers, WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh reported.

CNN reported that the plane was a United Airlines jet. It was unclear if the crash was related to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington.

Sean Cavanaugh, a commissioner in neighboring Fayette County, said his emergency management director, Barney Shipley, advised him that the plane originated in either Cleveland or New York and was bound for Chicago, WPXI reported.

Contrary to earlier reports of the plane being a 767, Cavanaugh said he was told the airplane was a Boeing 747, the largest passenger jet flown domestically.

The Somerset County airport, is a small, rural facility that does not handle such aircraft.

Because of the attacks, the Federal Aviation Administration had ordered all departing flights canceled nationwide, and any planes already in the air were to land a the nearest airport. The plane crashed shortly after the order was issued.

It was not immediately known if the 747 might have been trying to land at the Somerset County airport when the crash occurred.

In Los Angeles, the nation's second-largest city, police said here have been no threats that they are aware of, police said.

``We are on citywide tactical alert and we have mobilized our Anti-Terrorist Division,'' Officer Guillermo Campos said. The tactical alert was called about 6:15 a.m. Pacific time.

2 Planes Crash Into World Trade Center
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

(NY1)
In what the F.B.I. belives is a deliberate attack, airplanes crashed into each of the two towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan this morning, causing both to collapse.

Map: Around the World Trade Center

Airports All New York City airports are closed.
Subways All subway lines are closed until further notice.
Bridges All bridges coming into Manhattan are closed.
Tunnels All tunnels coming into Manhattan are closed.

n parallel attacks in New York City and Washington, planes crashed into each of the twin towers of the World Trade Center around 9 this morning and a plane later crashed into the outer ring of the Pentagon building, causing smoke, fire and a sense of panic in the streets.

Later, after a number of explosions, both towers of the World Trade Center collapsed. An enormous loss of life was feared.

In a short announcement during a visit to Sarasota, Fla., President Bush called the World Trade Center attack ``a national tragedy and an apparent act of terrorism against our country.''

Julian E. Barnes, a Times reporter, interviewed people who were in the towers at the time of the impact and people who witnessed the planes crashing into the towers.

A man who was standing on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge, Nicholas Gasper, who works for the New York City Transit Department, said he saw a four-engine plane ``doing a tilt into the building. From what I saw it looked like the place sliced into the tower,'' referring to the second impact. He said he heard the building shake. ``I am still shaking,'' he added.

A second man who was three or four blocks away from the tower, Terrance Phillips, 35, from New Jersey, said he was looking at the fire. ``Then I saw a 747 or some kind of plane. It crashed in and exploded. People were watching and then they started stampeding away.''

He added: ``People were jumping out of the building. People seemed to be deciding just to take their own lives. It was the most horrific thing I have ever seen.''

Television cameras captured the collapse in Manhattan. Both towers partially disappeared behind thick clouds of dark smoke; then the top floors of the south tower began to fall. Black smoke was all that remained. The camera's distance made it impossible to see people or details of the floors collapse, but witnesses said they had seen people jumping out windows.

After the second tower fell, the entire area was consumed with smoke, as if clouds had descended and enveloped the lower tip of Manhattan. The smoke continued to spread, over the harbor.

Further television coverage showed people running through the streets pursued by the smoke.

Sherri Day, a reporter at The Times, said she was forced to take refuge in a store to escape the billowing smoke. ``Everything's black,'' she said. ``It is impossible to see anything.''

In New York City, primary elections for mayor and other offices were called off after they had begun.

At a meeting in Lima, Peru, of the Organization of American States, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell spoke out against the attacks.

``A great tragedy has struck our country and it will not affect the nature of our society,'' he said. ``We'll find out who's responsible for this and bring them to justice.'' He took no questions and was returning to Washington, cutting short what was to have been a two-day visit.

After the crash at the Pentagon building, the White House, the Capitol building, the Treasury, State Department and all other federal buildings were evacuated. In New York, the United Nations building was also evacuated.

All airline travel within the United States was suspended and Mr. Bush was said to be on his way back from Sarasota to Washington. International flights were being diverted to Canada.

Mr. Bush said in Sarasota that he had ordered that ``the full resources of the federal government'' be used to carry out a full investigation to find out who was responsible for the World Trade Center attacks.

``Terrorism against our country will not stand,'' he said, before ending by leading a prayer for victims of the attacks.

Witness accounts differed over what kind of planes were involved in the impacts. One witness told CNN television that the first plane seemed to slow and deliberately line up before crashing into the north tower.

A witness who works in the strategic planning department at The New York Times, Alan Flippen, said that as he came to work on 46th Street just before 9 he saw an American Airlines Boeing 767 flying ``very low in the direction of the World Trade Center towers.''

He said he did not see the impact, but later reports said one of the planes that crashed into the towers was an American Airlines plane that had been hijacked on a flight from Boston.

In Washington, officials said the F.B.I. was investigating reports of the hijacking before the crashes.

Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above the gaping holes in the side of the 110-story twin towers, one of New York City's most famous landmarks, and debris rained down upon the street, one of the city's busiest work areas. When the second plane hit, a fireball of flame and smoke erupted, leaving a huge hole in the glass and steel tower.

All New York City-area airports were shut down, and several subway lines were immediately shut down. Trading on Wall Street was suspended and many businesses were ordered to evacuate their personnel.

From CNN.com

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.

• In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.

• American Airlines Boeing 767 that had been hijacked after take-off from Boston. American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents," one leaving Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard, and the second leaving Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles

• About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, part of which later collapsed.

• Sources say a second plane was heading toward the Pentagon; F-16 jets were in the air monitoring it.

• The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington evacuated.

• In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.

• All international flights were diverted to Canada.

• Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.

• President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy."

• In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated.

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated.

• The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city.

• New York's Bellevue Hospital was designated command central for handling the catastrophe. Several hospitals have already reported receiving victims with burns and head injuries.

• Large plane crashed 80 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but it was unknown if this crash was connected to terrorist attacks.

• U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.
