me on the BART with gene michaels
Posted by: Arpikarhu - 09-28-2004, 06:36 AM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (10)

riding the BART back to the hotel from the oakland/seattle game i see gene michaels. i say hello and ask him if george was too cheap to give him a car service from the stadium. he laughs and we get to talking. he said that giambi will probably be left off the playoff roster and questioned his heart. he said if it had been jeter he would have already been back to top form. he then talked about what a pain in the ass el duque is in the clubhouse but how much better he is than contreras. he also said how awful heredia is. i noticed his world series ring and he let me hold it and check it out. it was the 2000 series ring. those suckers are huge! we talked about santana's slider, how leiber has a bad slider but it works when he can place it, and how he is pushing to get pavano or radke rather than pedro in the offseason. he also said that unless mussina really steps up that the yanks dont have the pitching to win it all this year.
he was really cool and very candid.

  No Monster Mash this season
Posted by: GonzoStyle - 09-27-2004, 06:53 PM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (2)

Jamal Mashburn is out for the entire NBA season coming up. I always liked Mashburn and felt he was a very under-rated player and this trully sucks cause i've picked him every year when I could in fantasy, unfortunatly that included last season when he missed pretty much 80% of the season.

Quote:NEW ORLEANS - Former All-Star forward Jamal Mashburn will miss the entire 2004-05 NBA season because of a knee injury that could end his career.

Mashburn and the New Orleans Hornets (news) announced the news Monday, a week before the start of training camp.

The injury kept Mashburn, a 10-year veteran, out of all but 19 games last season after he underwent surgery to remove loose particles from his right knee. Mashburn said strenuous activity causes the knee to swell as badly as it did last March when his season ended. He averaged 20.8 points.

During a news conference, Mashburn acknowledged the injury could end his career, which began in 1993 as a first-round draft choice of the Dallas Mavericks (news). He also had a stint with the Miami Heat (news) before joining the Hornets in 2000 and making the All-Star team during the 2002-03 season.

Mashburn said retirement is a possibility, but he was holding out hope that he might be able to play.

"I have to remain optimistic," he said. "Hopefully, I can get better with rest. This is my livelihood. I have to stay positive."

The Hornets' insurance will cover about 80 percent of Mashburn's salary of about $18 million over the last two years of his contract if he is not healthy enough to play. Trading Mashburn remains a possibility because the insurance will follow him to another team.

Team trainers said several MRI exams performed over the summer indicated Mashburn had worn out cartilage in his right knee, causing bones to grind together and leaving a bruise and an irritation.

"I'm hoping with a rest and a lack of pounding, things will heal themselves and maybe there's a possibility in a year or so," Mashburn said. "I just have to take a wait-and-see approach. There's not a particular thing I can do. I've been trying everything. It's a frustrating situation."

With Mashburn out, Rodney Rogers and George Lynch will compete for the starting spot at small forward, Hornets coach Byron Scott said.

What makes him such a special joo that he can't play on yom kippur? Mike Lieberthal played. Brad Ausmus played. Gabe Kapler played. Al Levine pitched yesterday. What makes Shawn Green so different? 364 days of the year he commits himself to baseball and then 1 day he's all of a sudden a practicing joo? I hope LA misses the playoffs by 1 game and Californians grow some balls and chase him out of town like he were Brendan Fraser.

  Ichiro
Posted by: GonzoStyle - 09-25-2004, 07:31 PM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (8)

He went 2 for 4 today and is at 249 hits now, he's 9 away from breaking the mark of 257. My question is does anyone really care? Beyond home run marks, hitting 400, breaking the RBI record would be exciting maybe.

But most hits in a season, is it really exciting? Most of them, hell pretty much all of them were singles well over 200 singles. It's a great accomplishment naturally, not everyone and pretty much no one else but Sisler over 80 years ago has had a better single seasons hits mark not Cobb, Williams, or anyone else.

But I just really don't care to be honest cause maybe it's cause I dont like Ichiro or Seattle is beyond crap this year, or cause it's a bunch of singles and that doesnt win games, I dunno.

  Thoughts on week 3.
Posted by: Keyser Soze - 09-25-2004, 03:39 AM - Forum: SportsCenter - Replies (37)

Why so much hating on the Colts? OK, edge was a question earlier in the week but he is going to start and he has a more than capable backup to give him a rest if need be. I think the Colts will roll all over the Packers this weekend. They played well against the Pats in the opener and beat a tough Titans team in week 2.

Steelers/Dolphins. This game rides on how effective Chambers can continue to be and if Gordon can somehow get some forward progress. Hines Ward will continue to dominate. The Steelers should be able to shut down the Dolphins anemic offense.

Bengals/Ravens. Not sure why the Bengals are getting so much credit in a game where they are getting 3.5 pts. Curtis Martin ran all over them, what do you think Jamal Lewis will do? Rudi Johnson has yet to show the explosiveness he did last season and it won't get any easier against a tough Ravens run defense this week. I think the Ravens will win more decisively than the spread would indicate.
