Thank god because no one is hitting right now.

Really? Timo, Alfonzo, and Alomar arent hitting? It looks like they are doing pretty good to me.

Theres a new guy on my shit list to join Vaughn and Burnitz and thats Cedeno. This guy is getting too much playing time, and to throw in the fact he makes me want Todd Hundley back in left field.

As crazy as it to say this, I want Payton back in the lineup. When Payton gets going, he can go and bat .400 over a 2-3 week span, problem is 90% of the time hes cold, but when he gets hot he is very hot. Let Timo play Left, Payton play Center, and let Cedeno sit.

Vaughn and Burnitz can not hit back to back in the lineup, unless its 8 and 9 right now, because they are the 2 worst hitters in the lineup. Vaughn with a nice strikeout with the bases loaded, what a shock.

3-1 win tonight was nice, but once again they could have had alot more runs that just 3, they are lucky Astacio was on again tonight or they would have lost. Hopefully D'Amico will get his stuff back tomorrow after a couple of down starts recently.

Ok, Cluster F. Will do. Hell, the Dave Engel line is already out of date since he got fired the day after I wrote this. I, of course, take full credit ads the man who obviously made Steve Phillips do that move. Obviously.

You're right, Banger. It IS crazy to say.

Thank you Diamond Dust. Dave Engle stinks. And glad to see that you are staying the course and keeping the original objectives. :)

Now, for the game last night...makes it 3 out of 4 wins for the Mets. Astacio was AWESOME last night, his location was so precise. Hitting...well we won so thats what counts, and Alomar, Fonzy, and Timo are playing great right now. D'Amico should keep the winning trend going.

BTW, Braves lost in 15 innings last night, maybe that will put a halt to their winning ways for now. :-D

FB,
While I agree that Mets should sometimes sit Cedeno in favor of Payton, I wouldn't put him with Burnitz & Vaughn just yet. As I said in my post, he's been banged up and he was improving on defense until that lapse. He'll never be a gold glover, but I believe he's going to be at least average there. Maybe he should a couple of days in a row or even d/l and get healthy. His game is based on his legs, and the recent injuries (ankle & knee) don't help him any.

The most interesting thing I found about the Engle firing was Phillips saying he was going outside the organization for a replacement. He's finally realizing that there is a problem in the system. Too bad Clint Hurdle is no longer available :-D

They should take Keith Hernandez out of the booth and let him be the hitting instructor, he always seems to have the answer.

And of course by doing that I wont have to hear him in the booth doing the occasional game anymore. But when you think about compared to some of the other Met announcers on TV, hes not that bad.

Who is the programming genius over at Channel 11 who pairs up Seaver and Hernandez for a Full game without a play by play man. Seaver is an awful analyst as it is, he certainly is not a play by play man.

I'd rather listen to Ralph Kiner call all 9 innigs himself than listen to the White Sox announcers. They are the most biased, awful announcers I've ever heard. When Perez hit his homer, it sounded like just a routine groundout. But when one of their pitchers gets as much as a strikeout, they get all pumped up. It's really pathetic to listen to, actually. As is this...
"Headed to the ninth, Mets 3, 'good guys' 1."
I've always hated them, it's just so much more annoying listening to them now.

Yeah, Seaver and Hernandez are horrible to listen to. But, some of the Mets announcers are pretty good, and especially on the radio. Every weekend at work i listen on the radio cause i have no tv there, and i enjoy the game a lot because the announcers on the FAN know their shit, and are entertaining too. Of course, seeing and listening is better than just listening, but the radio is a good way to keep track of the game.

Anyone who says "good guys" when referring to their team should be hung.

Mets lose to the White Sox 10-8 tonight. D'Amico was horrible. Score 8 runs and the pitching staff gives up 10. It's enough to drive you crazy.

Gotta love taking 2 out of 3...especially the way we did it, with Mo Vaughn finally doing his job and hitting a homerun. We can only hope that sparks a run for him. Best at-bat of that inning was Alomar's though. Incredible to get a double out of that.

Gotta keep it going, lets not worry about the Braves just yet (they did lose though, so thats always good :) ), but lets go about our business and win another series against the Twins. This 22 outta 30 thing can happen. And if it does, we'll be right back in the ballgame.

I was at the game. Out of 55,000+, there must have been betweeen 15,000 to 20,000 Yankee fans. Some the quiet normal kind, and some the loud idiot kind.
Things weren't looking too good. Wells was giving up a couple of hits, but mets couldn't get big hit. When they walked Piazza in first to face Vaughn despite Vaughn's history against Wells, I thought "maybe this will piss him off and get him going". Instead he looks at a called 3rd strike even though Hirshbeck was calling a wide zone then. Inexcusable.
Yankees kept getting lead off runners on, but Astascio was getting out of it. Yankees got big hit by Soriano to take the lead, and a good omen, Soriano was thrown out stealing by Piazza. (yeah, that's right). Next inning Yankees got another run and looked like they were going to blow it open - Astascio showed real guts and got out of inning without more damage.
Then the bottom of the 8th - Alomar double. Good sign, since he was struggling. Piazza hits weak spinning grounder to Giambi, and he can't handle it. Place starts to pick up, but Vaughn has dissapointed us before. Not this time. He jolts the Wells Fastball out of here and the place rocks - you see all sorts of Yankee fans heading for the exits.

Of course, us Met fans know it ain't over yet. Benitez. Posada hits long fly ball. yankee fans cheer like crazy, but have no clue. Payton makes routine out. White hits ground ball to Ordonez. 1 more to go. I know don't take anything for granted. Spenser hitting - Torre holding Nick Johnson for a possible winning run. 1-2.2-2. 3-2. I figure for sure Benitez will walk Spenser and we'll have to face Johnson as potential winning run; but Spenser wiffs, and game is over.

Now, as CF puts it, it is time to put a string together. Hope Vaughn is going to continue, and we can score a few. Reed is injured, so we won't face him.

This is like Deja Vu. Mets get off to a shitty start, fire hitting coach, turn things around against the Yankees.

Can we go 45 - 10 over the next 55 games?!

Don't want to interfere in your thread here, but thought this one was more appropriate than my Mets and Yankees one since that series is over.

I told you guys that the Mets play best against the Yankees. They need that playoff type of atmosphere or from my perspective they blow. You can't play the Braves and yankees every game to get you up for the game..

Your still wrong. Just because they didnt show up for Minnesota one game doesnt mean that is right. If the Mets play their best baseball agains the Yankees and Atlanta, and have a record against those teams that is well below .500, then that would be pretty sad.

And Minnesota is a pretty good team to begin with. Mets need to win the next 5 games now.

And by the way the Mets play their best baseball when I go to the game (Saturday and Sunday included) they are 5-0.

The Mets play their Worst Baseball when Im working during the game 4-16. (0-10 on Weeknights).

Bad News is Im working again tonight, so lets see how they screw this one up tonight with Leiter facing a fill in.

over the last few years, mets have a habit of coming out flat against un-heralded pitchers.

I'm getting awfully tired of this team. Back in '98 & '99 when they weren't expected to do as much they were a fun watch. Now there is no emotion, no production. We are left to be happy that Mo Vaughn got a long out.

D'Amico's had a few bad starts lately, as has Leiter. With the hitting as bad as it is, we can't afford pitchers to backslide.

And Komiyama? for chrissakes, you might as well turn off the TV when he comes in.

I know Twins are a good team, but you have to win against good teams sometimes - and at the very least look like you have a chance. Friday I was pissed that they blew a close one, but that is better than last night when they never were in the game.

I like Valentine, but it is time he do something to get this team fired up.

I get the sense this has been missing from this team since Game 5 of the 2000 WS. Just seems like there's been something.......missing, dating back to last season. Can't really explain it, all I know is yesterday was one of the most disappointing, deflating, depressing performances I've seen in a while.

Mets notes 6-20-02:

Maybe it's unfortunate to say, but Jeromy Burnitz (.211) has looked like a completely different hitter over the last few games for the Mets since being drilled in the head by a Sterling Hitchcock fastball on Friday night.

Burnitz has hit in four straight games since the beanball, batting .462 (6-13) through that span. Last night, he worked out a 13-pitch walk against Matt Kinney in the second and stroked solid singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

GUNNED DOWN: Stop the presses. Mike Piazza has caught two runners attempting to steal in his last three games.

Piazza ended the top half of the first inning by firing a strike into the glove of Rey Ordonez to nail Christian Guzman last night. Before nailing the Yankees' Alfonso Soriano on Sunday night, Piazza went over two months without catching a baserunner after throwing out Atlanta's B.J. Surhoff at Turner Field on April 6.

Biggest concern is that Twins have a number of good left-handed hitters, and Leiter's effort might have been an aberation.
Also, Mets still have not hit well against Lefthanders.

Great game tonight, but we can't be giving up late inning runs, it gets way too close for comfort.

This was the first time I've ever seen an outfielder lose his glove and cause a homerun.

Well I was at today's game.
Game started out fairly well, with D'Amico pitching strongly. Mets got first run, but Timo made a questionable running decision to finish out the inning. (Questionable because I'm not 100% sure Alomar scores if throw goes through).

Then the Royals 6th. 2 outs and Neifi Perez fouls off several pitches. This keeps inning alive for Royals to pick up 4 runs. The last was a broken bat swing by Brett Mayne, with the ball spinning strangely and the bat moving along with the ball. Somehow Alfonzo is given an error (the worst scoring I've seen), and it doesn't look like the Mets day.

Bottom of 6th, and it looks less and less like there will be a happy recap. After Timo doubles, he takes 3rd on Piazza's groundout to 3rd (nice running). Vaughn up (ugh). Inside pitch gets away and Timo scores. Except that the pitch hits Vaughn, so Timo back to 3rd. OK, it clears Vaughn for Alfonzo. Fonzie hits long fly to left that should have been a 3 run homer, except Ibanez, who has killed mets whole series, leaps over the top of the fence and makes the catch.

Right there I figured season over.
To their credit, Mets came back, lead by Burnitz hitting, Valentin snapping a 1 for 20 (or something like that) streak with a 2 run homer to bring Mets within 1.

Tarasco brought in as a pinch hitter stays in CF, and robs Sweeny next inning.

Next inning Mets finish the comeback, highlighted by Cedeno clutch bases loaded single.

Even Benitez can't ruin the day.

Now Braves come in on their amazing roll.
Next 4 games may make the season.

6 outta 8 wins going into this key series against the Braves. Gotta keep winning series after series to be where we want to be. So, 3 out of 4 would be very nice right now, which would make it 9 out of 12, which isnt half bad. These games against the Braves always feel the most satisfying when we win. GO METS!!
