Astacio was dominant. First error-free game in a while which is a good sign.. Big game tomorrow, I think it'll be a huge boost if they can beat Glavine and Maddux back to back. (and, though it's early, have a 4.5 game lead on them)

I think my mask of sanity              is about to slip

I think I heard on Baseball tonight (last night) that the 3-1/2 game lead Mets have over Braves is most ever, since the Braves joined the East.

The psychological impact of us continuously finding ways to
beat them (with the exception of one single extra inning
game) will have a huge impact in late September.

Knowing-you-can is, to pro athletes, everything.

Pretty cool that the best pitcher named Pedro so far this year is not Pedro Martinez. The chant of Pedro in the 9th was awesome. I know its early in the year, but these wins against the Braves now could be, and probably will be, very important come September.

I totally forgot about this game. 2-1 loss to those damn Braves. I read the stats, no errors for Rey and he got the only RBI for the Mets. Maybe there still is hope...

Well, D'Amico was thrown out at first by a Ground ball to the right fielder (surhoff). That is all you really needed to know.

Oh yeah, Maddox was injured and taken out after one inning.

Why is it every time the Braves MUST win a game against the Mets they do it. We can never send them away limping.

Oh well the Mets must regroup and hopefully take 3 out of 4 in Montreal, and maybe the bats will wake up in the process.

What a pitching performance by Leiter. That's two complete games in three days after just three all last year. And he did it against a lineup that can score runs. Lets keep this rolling Trachsel.

Some thoughts/observations from today:

-I hate Steve Trachsel. As i said on the first page of this thread, he is a LOSING pitcher; he always seems to find ways to lose. You have all the time in the world, STEP ON THE FUCKIN BASE!!!

-Roberto Alomar is really starting to get annoying. Left 2 stranded in two straight AB's. It's only a matter of time before he gets comfortable and finds his groove, but still...

-It's amazing watching the contrast in both defenses up the middle. I cringed every time there's a grounder to Ordonez/Alomar.. While everything hit today to Cabrera/Vidro was so smooth and they made it look so easy.

-This is the 2nd loss, both to Montreal, in which the blame can be pointed right to the defense. 3 more errors, 4 unearned runs. Fuckin ponderous.

-This is 11 straight games decided by 2 or less runs.

Well, I really hope that the curse that the Mets seem to have with ex-Cleveland 2nd basemen stops now. First Carlos Baerga, and now ROberto. Im sure he'll do better, but still, not good so far.

Questionable call by Valentine (and i dont criticize him much) by not putting Piazza up. Granted, he wouldve been walked, but that puts the tying run on 1st, and brings up Alomar, who id rather have up there than Tarasco. Oh well.

Im sure we'll take the next 2 games with Astacio and Estes on the hill.

Actually, you would have had a pitcher bat with the bases loaded, 2 outs. When Perez decided to argue and step out, umpire did not call time and insisted Herges pitch -Burnitz said something from the Bench and was thrown out. (he later admitted it was bone-headed). Robinson later backed Valentines move, saying if he put up Piazza, they would have walked Piazza AND Alomar, bringing up Burnitz spot - and since there were no position players left, Mets would have had to put up a pitcher as a pinch hitter.

Today's game - once again defense hurts team. I am truly shocked at how the defense has played this year.

yeah...they did a shitty job on tv about all of that...they didnt even mention that anyone got thrown out. At first i thought Bobby was thrown out, but that idiot Fran Healy didnt clarify anything. I heard on the reliable radio today about that.

As for today....i have nothing to say. The shitty defense says it all. I am in total shock right now with the defense.

Throw in the fact, they still cant hit for shit.

It was like 3 days ago when we were all excited about possibly sweeping the Braves and putting a nice distance between ourselves. Now we are only 1 Fuckin Game ahead of them.

Thank God Vaughn is back. Start Hitting!!! And Enough of these Bonehead Mistakes in the Field!

What is happening? The Mets were padding their lead in the division and all-of-a-sudden they are fighting for it again. The Defense has to get in the game, especially the infield. And the Offense needs to get early leads to help out the sloppy Defense. We got a series with the Cards coming up, the Mets need to take atleast 2 of 3 from them.

What is happening is teams Mets played (Pirates & Expos) are much better than everyone thought, and if Mets aren't going to play tough, they aren't going to win. Get the runs home, make the defensive plays.

I was one who wanted Cedeno, but he's been awful so far. Swinging on a 2-0 pitch today was inexcuseable; fouling a bunt third strike; turning the wrong way on key fly balls.

That is true and the Expos really arent that bad of a team.

But with that said, it still is unexcusable to lose 3 out of 4 in Montreal. And if Leiter didnt pitch a flawless game on Thursday Night, they would have lost all 4. A split I could live with. 3 out of 4 losses is not acceptable.

Luckily, the Cardinals are playing even worse than the Mets. The Cards were just swept 4 straight by Milwaukee.

Now we are tied with the Braves. What the hell happened. It was so much letter 5 days ago.

whew. needed to win today. D'Amico seems to be the most consistent pitcher. Another solid outing.

But holy fuck Ordonez continues to piss me off. Alfonzo doubles (should've been a triple, but oh well), then Veres walks Burnitz, throws a wild pitch, then walks Cedeno. And Ordonez swings at the FIRST PITCH and grounds into his usual double play. If you're going to ground into the DP, at least take a couple of fuckin pitches.

Good thing I got to see this game and didn't have to rely on Yahoo. What the fuck's with this!?!?:

St. Louis Inning Summary
· J Edmonds struck out swinging.
· T Martinez singled to center.
· E Marrero hit for E Renteria.
· E Marrero scored on A Benitez' balk.
· M Cairo struck out swinging.

I only watched part of the game, but I'm just happy the Mets won against the struggling Cards. No way the Mets would be able to afford losing 3 to the Expos and then continue to slide against the Cards! D'Amico earned the win, Piazza and Burnitz both got RBI's. Nice to see the Big Guys are hitting.

Good win Tonight to beat Matt Morris who is one of the best pitchers in the National League. Mets have a big advantage tomorrow with Leiter. Leiter should eat up the Cardinals left handed hitters, Edmonds, Drew, and Martinez.

Lets hope Piazza isnt going to have to go on the DL now. Just when we get Vaughn back, now Piazza may be next. Lets hope its not serious.

Heres some good news Mets fans. Next week the Mets play Tuesday-Thursday at Arizona. Johnson is scheduled to pitch this Saturday at Florida, while Schilling pitches Sunday.

This means the Mets will definetly miss Schilling, and unless Bob Brenly decides to skip the 5th starter with the day off on Monday, the Mets will miss Johnson as well. Which means a 3 game series in Arizona with no Johnson and Schilling. Could be a major break.

But lets take care of St. Louis and Milwaukee right now. At least 4 out of 6, hopefully 5.

Tonights matchup should be high quality with Kile vs Leiter. I see a 3-2 style game playing out.

Hopefully Piazza isnt too hurt, i think its only going to be a day to day thing, so that would be good. And how bout D'Amico...pretty damn good so far.

They'll probably let Piazza sit this series unless he makes a pinch hit appearance.

Ordonez is also injured. Woohoo!

Good news: defense seems to be settling down
Bad news: today's loss was the type of loss from last season - another great outing by Leiter, yet no run support.

And what was Valentine thinking in the 7th??? Alfonzo and Burnitz are on with no outs. If you're gonna have Payton bunt them over, why would you not pinch hit for Leiter? Especially with 2 out. Regardless of the 2-run 8th, I do think it was the right move keeping Leiter in, but I think they should have had Payton swing away in that situation with Wilson/Leiter coming up.

Oh well, just my daily complaint.

Very exciting game tonight, with the good guys winning it after Johnson's blast. Key point of the game was obviously Guthrie's K on Edmonds with bases loaded, 2 outs, full count in the 6th. Good win, but errors are KILLING ME!

Yeah, Bullpen was on - Guthrie struck out JD Drew with 2nd & 3rd before getting Edmonds. Good to see Mets able to come back again - while I hate to see them fall behind, at least they show some guts.

Tonight Estes vs. Rusch in cold weather at Shea. We'll see which Rusch (and which Estes) show up.
I'm getting a little worried though about Mets vs a lefty, especially with Piazza out and Payton sucking.
