I was always very Anti-Tarasco, especially when they kept him, yet shipped out Mark Johnson. But he's starting to come around, it would be nice to have a solid right handed batter with some power on the bench. I love Joe McEwing, but he's not had the success at the plate that you would expect out of him lately.

Don't know if you knew this, but Tarasco bats LEFT (he only throws right). I like Mark Johnson, but with Vaughn there Mets don't really need another left handed 1b. Tarasco can run well (see pinch run), and his catch Sunday in CF was really nice.

McEwing is starting to REALLY tick me off. He started this big leg kick, and is now something like 0-23. He is striking out 1 out of every 3 AB's. For crying out loud, go back to being the contact hitter he used to be. Last year a .342 OBP; this year he's at .231, making Ordonez look like a good hitter.

2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)

1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)

I dont think Froy was talking about Tarasco. I think he was just making the statement that the Mets need a right handed bopper off the bench, and he is right because they really dont have one.

But the bench certainly is not the reason for the Mets dissapointing season so far. The rest of the Mets season is simple to determine. If Vaughn, Burnitz, and Alomar wake up and finally begin to play to their potential for the remainder of the season, the Mets will make some noise. If they continue to be lackluster at best, the Mets will continue to be just a mediocre .500 baseball team.

And of course the Pitching has to continue to hold up for them to win.

I haven't posted in a while but it's been a so-so couple of weeks... Nice way to finish off the Yanks. I thought for a while Mo would go on a tear but he's slowly performing still. We split the KC series but I think we could've won more than 2. As for yesterdays game... We could've won it, Leiter pitched good but it was a struggle for runs until late in the game. I didn't see Lockhart putting it away for them but expect the unexpected...Trachsel vs. Lopez tonight, we can take this game for sure. We need it! BADLY!

Ok, so the Braves took a game from us. We can take the next 3 and still win this series. The Braves are not this good, they are definitely not the best team in the NL like their record say they are now. They are just on a roll, and they will cool off. And its up to us to catch them, and we can start by winning tonight.

They're like that damn Jason from Halloween. Look at their team - Lockhart, Matt Franco, Julio Franco, Castillo, these guys have no right to win games, but when they put on the uni Bobby Cox gets them to believe, and they somehow do it. They've got talented players, sure. I can take being beaten by Larry Jones, or Glavine - it's those Lockhart home runs that put a dagger in my heart.

Mets up 7-0, and Trachsel pitching a no-hitter. All of a sudden it's 7-3. Met's get runners 2nd & 3rd, don't score. Braves get 2nd & 3rd next inning they get the sac fly to make it 7-4. Frustrating as hell.

Speaking of frustrating, it's time to send Vaughn to Norfolk for "rehab". I can convince myself that Burnitz, Alomar, and even Cedeno will pick it up, but Vaughn is so lost it's frightening. He's pressing so much, and it will get worse.

edit.
Glass half empty or half full? Mets almost blow 7-0 lead, but also Benitez comes in with 1 out bases loaded in 8th and shuts door. then finishes out 9th with a little excitement.
Will this give him juice as finishing a "big game", or does them being 8-1/2 games out change the feeling?

You either mean Jason from Friday the 13th, or Michael Myers from Halloween.

Anyway even when this team wins a game 7-4, you cant walk away satisfied. The last 4 innings were putrid to watch, and thank god the Braves took a page out of the Mets play book at the end and decided that once runners get on base, the hitting must stop.

Piazza got that double to make it 7-0, they should have poured it on and it should have been at least 9 or 10-0, but of course with 2nd and 3rd no out. Vaughn strikes out, Burnitz pops out, Cedeno strikes out.

Its time for Vaughn to sit and sit for good. As long as he keeps standing on the plate, hes never going to hit, they go inside on him any time, the only way Vaughn can get a hit is if the pitcher makes a mistake and leaves it out over the plate.

If they can beat Glavine tomorrow that will show me something, but until they start actually doing something, and not playing like their dead, im not going to be impressed with 1 victory, that gets us to 7 1/2 games.

The first 5 innings of this game show what the Mets are really capable of doing this year. The last 4 innings show exactly where they are right now. The win was NEEDED BIG TIME, but the way we got it was so frustrating. Instead of getting it the easy way, we have to struggle as usual.

Gotta follow this win up with another one on Wednesday or else tonight meant nothing.

Hey FB, couldn't you let me get away with one? ;)

(OK -I realized my mistake this morning, but I was too lazy to fix it)

Vaughn got 2 extra base hits, but I'm not going to believe until I see a few games in a row.

I'm getting annoyed at Alomar also. He makes the great ESPN web-gem type play, but he seems to hot-dog it in the field sometimes. the Braves 1st run scored on a play that he chose to try that back hand flip to first instead of turning and throwing - Garcia beat the throw.

Christ, now even the bullpen sucks.

When does Jets camp start??

He would have beaten the throw had Alomar stopped, turned and threw, anyway.

Vaughn's error didn't bother me as much as the leadoff walk. The walk to Franco after getting ahead 1-2 wasn't very plesing either. Then of course there's the grand slam by Brian Jordan. (whatever)

No he wouldnt have. Or at very least it would have been alot closer.

Anyway Strickland is really hurting the Mets right now. He has blown 3 games to the Braves now, Unacceptable.

The Mets at best can get a split in this series. Unacceptable.

Well, the Mets are 8-6 in their last 14 games. Which means, to win 22 out of 30 since June 15th, theyd have to go 14-2 in their next 16. You gotta believe right?

Dont really know what else to say, except that they are playing like a typical .500 team. I feel like im on a rollercoaster ride.

Tough loss last night...Could've been a win for us. Piazza was great and Vaughn is starting to hit but still isn't up to where he should be... D'Amico just can't get a win!

We open up a set with the Fish. None of these teams will catch the Braves or the Wildcard, but the Mets just need to get in a winning groove. It's Leiter vs. Tavarez...

No matter what they do it won't be a good note.

When does Phillips start to take the heat?
a) he put this team together, and the parts don't fit. Like the Knicks, they took under achievers with short term contracts and traded them in for under achievers with long term contracts.

b) The mets system still is relatively weak. This is the biggest indictment of Phillips. Outside of Jose Reyes & maybe Justin Huber, there are few blue chip position prospects. The pitching prospects aren't abundant either - Aaron Heilman and a lot of maybes.

The Mets have to just concentrate on getting over .500! If they approach the next half of the year as a new season and start it well they could do it. They need to get the big hitters going, where the fuck is Burnitz when you need him? Early in the year it was our defense, once we start playing well on defense our offense starts struggling. Our pitching has been the bright spot for us this year, with some few inconsistencies but overall it's good.

Well, some way to start off the post all star game stretch. An 8 run 8th always makes things more gooder. Of course, it was against the worst bullpen in the league, and we did get shut down against Wolf, but hey, 8 runs in an inning is 8 runs, no matter how you slice it.

1 win down, 51 to go

Well, based on the first half, they will follow up this with being shut out on 3 hits.

Despite the win there were still a lot of things not to like, but Alomar at least was very solid, hitting from the right side. Don't forget this was against the Phillies with their awful bullpen and awful road record.
